Israel attacks on Iran inflame Mideast shipping tensions
As of early Friday vessel traffic was flowing through the Strait of Hormuz between Iran and Oman, the only route out of the Persian Gulf to global shipping lanes. GPS data showed container ships from Taiwan's Wan Hai and CMA CGM of France in the area.
United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO), which monitors Middle East shipping, said increased tensions in the region 'could lead to an escalation of military activity having a direct impact on mariners. Vessels are advised to transit the Arabian Gulf, Gulf of Oman and Straits of Hormuz with caution.'
Iran still holds the 14,000-TEU container ship MSC Aries, which it detained in 2024.
The air attacks by Israel also killed two high-level Iranian military leaders.
Maritime analysts said increasing conflict could lead major container carriers to withdraw services in the straits, as attacks by Yemen-based Houthi rebels did in the Red Sea.
'If this leads to major container lines avoiding transits through the Strait of Hormuz, this will severely impact links to the major container terminal transshipment hubs inside the Persian Gulf such as Jebel Ali [in Dubai] and Port Khalifa [in Abu Dhabi], said analyst Lars Jensen, in a LinkedIn post. 'A ripple effect would be a sharp increase in handlings with a high risk of wider Asian congestion issues.'
Iran's state news agency Friday denied reports that it had struck back at Israel with drones. Tehran also accused the United States of aiding Israel's strikes, a charge denied by U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio.
The attacks by Israel pushed West Texas Intermediate crude oil prices by more than 9%, while crude oil futures rose 13%.

WHY IT'S IMPORTANT The leaders of Thailand and Cambodia were scheduled to attend mediation talks over their deadly border conflict in Malaysia on Monday, the Thai government said, as both sides accused each other of launching fresh artillery strikes across contested areas. Tensions between Thailand and Cambodia have intensified since the late-May killing of a Cambodian soldier during a brief border skirmish. Border troops on both sides were reinforced amid a full-blown diplomatic crisis that brought Thailand's fragile coalition government to the brink of collapse. Hostilities resumed on Thursday and, within just four days, escalated into the worst fighting between the Southeast Asian neighbors in more than a decade. CONTEXT The death toll has risen above 30, including 13 civilians in Thailand and eight in Cambodia, while authorities report that more than 200,000 people have been evacuated from border areas. Trump said on Sunday he believed both Thailand and Cambodia wanted to settle their differences after he told the leaders of both countries that he would not conclude trade deals with them unless they ended their fighting.

Walmart launches plan to steal customers away from Target, Amazon
If you're looking for a deal, you probably think to wait until the holidays, when most retailers launch big Black Friday sales. This is a sound idea; the holiday shopping season remains the most lucrative time of the year for most retailers. "The back-to-school shopping period from July to mid-September is the second-biggest sales driver of the year after the holiday season," the U.S. Chamber of Commerce reports. Every year, usually in the weeks that lead up to late August or early September, most big-box retail stores hold their own versions of back-to-school sales. It may seem gimmicky to celebrate a pretty routine part of the year to get shoppers through the door, but it works. "Americans are expected to spend $38.8 billion on clothes and supplies for children in grades K-12, and $86.6 billion on college students," the U.S. Chamber of Commerce said, per a 2024 National Retail Federation report. But tariffs, rising prices, and inflation complicate this picture. Many families have indicated they'll either slow their spending or specifically shop at discount retailers in search of deals. The Arkansas-based retailer has cut the price of its top 14 most popular items to prices lower than they were one year prior. Some items are as low as $0.25, and its popular private brand Wonder Nation backpack is less than $5 at just $4.98. All told, Walmart says a student can get outfitted for the new year for just $65. But tariffs, which are duties on imported goods, have complicated the typically profitable back-to-school shopping period. Walmart CEO Doug McMillon explained the complication during the Q1 2026 earnings call. "We started to see increases happen in April and through May. We've been really focused on back-to-school receipts," McMillon explained. "When you have an imported item, you pay the tariff at the time it comes through customs. And so the cost is higher, even if the tariff rate comes down later, the cost has been elevated. McMillon added that tariffs could touch certain items, including back-to-school supplies, with an outsized effect. "So I wouldn't think of this as a moment in time necessarily, except when you think about seasonal things like back-to-school." Other top retailers, including Target (TGT) and Amazon (AMZN) , are also hosting early back-to-school promotions. Amazon's Prime Day served as its early back-to-school launch. It featured deals on books, notebooks, and pens for as low as $3. And Target announced it would put over 20 items on sale for back-to-school. The Minnesota-based retailer said it was freezing the prices of these items at 2024 prices. It claims students can bundle most of their school essentials for just around $20. Houthis Vow to Step Up Shipping Attacks to Press Israel on Gaza
Houthi militants pledged to target ships of any company that deals with Israeli ports, escalating their military operations in a bid to increase pressure on Israel to further ease restrictions on the hunger-ravaged Gaza Strip. The targeted ships will be attacked 'in any location within the reach of our armed forces,' a spokesman for the Iranian-backed group, Yahya Saree, said in televised comments. 'All our military operations will be ceased immediately upon the cessation of aggression against Gaza and the lifting of the blockade.'
