Less driving, more exploring: How open-jaw travel can transform your road trip
The great American road trip is a summer travel staple. But for many, the lasting impression might be the seemingly endless serenade of 'Are we there yet?'
With efficiency borrowed from European travelers who've mastered open-jaw travel — flying into and exploring one city, driving to another and flying home from yet another — you can maximize your summer vacation. Yes, it adds cost, but you're exploring more while spending less time behind the wheel, which is bound to keep fidgety family members happy.
Here are two routes that keep the driving to about three hours while adding a fresh twist to a summer travel staple:
Southern Swing
We're starting a little ways off the trodden tourist path, but there's lots to do in Little Rock, Ark., beginning with a ranger-led interpretive tour at Little Rock Central High School National Historic Site (Tuesday-Saturday afternoons) and a visit to the Old State House Museum.
Outdoorsy types can rent mountain bikes and take in the local trails, including the 88-mile Arkansas River Trail, while those who appreciate art can spend hours in the Arkansas Museum of Fine Arts, which has free entry.
For a quick day trip, visit the spring-fed, Victorian-era bathhouses that make up Bathhouse Row in Hot Springs National Park.
From Little Rock, it's a straight 140-mile drive through delta country to get to your next destination just across the Mississippi River. From barbecue to Beale Street, there's plenty to keep you busy in Memphis, and a stay at the Central Station hotel puts you within walking distance to most of it.
Memphis barbecue is a unique style, separate from Kansas City, Texas or the Carolinas, with a focus on pork. Make time to stop at Leonard's Pit Barbecue or Charlie Vergos's Rendezvous, which pioneered the dry rub style Memphis is known for. If you're traveling with kids, visit Beale Street during the day; if not, enjoy the bars and music clubs in the evening.
Speaking of music: No trip to Memphis is complete without stops at the Stax Museum of American Soul Music, Sun Studio and Graceland.
Now it's time to get back on I-40 and head about 200 miles east to the Country Music Capital of the World.
No slouch in the culinary department, Nashville has long been famous for its hot chicken and, more recently, for its James Beard-nominated restaurants such as Bastion and Yolan.
After a visit to the Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum, make time to hear some live music at the Grand Ole Opry, which lends the cultural weight you'll need after visiting the touristy honky tonk bars along Broadway. And keep your eyes on the calendar: The Opry is celebrating its 100th anniversary this year.
Westward Wandering
Fly into Glacier Park International Airport in Kalispell, Mont., and get a taste of the Yellowstone lifestyle at the all-inclusive Flathead Lake Lodge.
Overlooking the largest freshwater lake in the west, it offers activities such as fishing and kayaking to the typical dude ranch pastimes of horseback riding and hiking. For a change of pace, check out the nearby towns of Bigfork or Kalispell.
The next stop, Coeur d'Alene, Idaho, is a 200-mile drive from Bigfork.Break it up by stopping at the St. Regis Travel Center in St. Regis, Montana, for a huckleberry milkshake.
A resort town, Coeur d'Alene is renowned for skiing, but the area is an outdoor playground all year, with Silverwood Theme Park nearby or the lure of relaxing days stand-up paddleboarding on Lake Coeur d'Alene.
After remote stops in Montana and Idaho, you might be ready for a slightly more urban experience. Spokane, Wash., delivers: As the smallest city to host a World's Fair, it's been punching above its weight for a while. Here you'll find interesting and eclectic eats, a thriving art scene, shopping, and views of the Spokane River from many perspectives.

Marriott opens largest AC Hotel in North America
This story was originally published on Hotel Dive. To receive daily news and insights, subscribe to our free daily Hotel Dive newsletter. Dive Brief: Marriott International opened the largest AC Hotel in North America in Arlington, Virginia, hospitality management firm HHM Hotels announced earlier this week. The 355-room AC Hotel Arlington National Landing opened after a multimillion-dollar transformation of the former Crystal City Marriott. The property offers an AD Kitchen & Lounge, a 4,000-square-foot fitness center and 8,800 square feet of meeting and event space. The AC Hotel Arlington National Landing follows other recently opened AC Hotels in Arizona, California and Georgia. The brand is one of several in Marriott's expanding lifestyle portfolio, which includes the recently acquired CitizenM. Dive Insight: The former Crystal City Marriott's lobby, meeting spaces, exterior facade and food and beverage were all updated in the hotel's revamp. The AC Hotel also now features an AC Library with nooks for lounging and 'European-inspired' design, according to HHM. The property is in Arlington's National Landing district, walking distance to the Washington, D.C., Metro and minutes by car from Reagan National Airport. "Our prime location to major transportation systems matched with our bold, new identity and state-of-the-art facilities is a welcome addition to the community for special events, meetings, celebratory occasions, and a thoughtfully designed home away from home,' said Ben Joseph, the hotel's general manager, in a statement. Marriott — like its competitors Hilton and Hyatt Hotels — is expanding its lifestyle portfolio. That expansion includes its $355 million acquisition of CitizenM, which was finalized this week. Philadelphia-based HHM Hotels created its luxury and lifestyle division in 2023. The firm announced plans to restructure its leadership team to boost 'scalable growth' earlier this month. Michigan Discussing Kicking Off 2026 Football Season in Germany
Michigan is having discussions about kicking off the 2026 football season against Western Michigan in Germany. The school announced Friday on social media that it is seeking to play at Deutsche Bank Park in Frankfurt on Aug. 29, 2026. It would be the first game the Wolverines would play outside of North America. Athletic director Warde Manuel said in a statement this would be a "first-of-its-kind opportunity" for the Wolverines and their fans. "The University of Michigan is one of the few worldwide brands in college athletics and the interest in playing an international game would be unique," Manuel said. "This would be a great opportunity to teach 'Go Blue' to a new group of fans in Germany." Home to Eintracht Frankfurt of Bundesliga, the stadium features a retractable roof with a capacity of 55,000. Deutsche Bank Park has hosted five NFL games, including two regular-season games in 2023. Michigan coach Sherrone Moore said they're always looking for unique opportunities for their players, noting the program has been to Italy, France and South Africa over the past decade. The game would require a rescheduling of Michigan's home opener that's currently set for Sept. 5. "This game would provide another chance to grow our international fanbase," Moore said. American football isn't new to traveling overseas and this isn't the first time the college game has made its way overseas. There have been bowl games and annual Classics played overseas since 1976. Grambling State beat Morgan State, 42-16, in the Mirage Bowl in Tokyo, Japan. Grambling would return to Tokyo, defeating Temple in 1977, 35-32. The Mirage Bowl was an annual bowl game in Japan until 1993, featuring powerhouse programs like Notre Dame, Miami, Nebraska, USC, Oregon and Clemson. The Mirage Bowl was replaced by the Coca-Cola Bowl the following year and was shortly discontinued after two years. Japan wasn't the only place the NCAA traveled to promote the game. Dublin, Ireland has hosted collegiate games, most recently last season when Georgia Tech upset, at the time, No. 10 Florida State in Week 0. The first game to be played in Ireland was in 1988 between Boston College and Army. Boston College won 38-24. The collegiate game has traveled as far as Australia, when Colorado State took on Brigham Young University (BYU) in 1987. BYU won 30-26. The Sydney College Football Cup returned in 2016 and 2017; California trounced Hawai'i, 51-21, in 2016. In 2017, Stanford routed Rice, 62-7. The NFL has also made the move to spread the game overseas, in its "International Series", playing regular-season games in Europe, the United Kingdom, Mexico and Brazil. The first game was in 2007 between the New York Giants and Miami Dolphins. The NFL played five games in their "International Series" last season, spanning from Brazil to London to Germany.
