Russia says it captured Ukrainian town of Chasiv Yar after 16-month battle
The advance, if confirmed, would mark a significant gain for Moscow's forces and could enable them to press on towards key "fortress" cities in the Donetsk region, including Kostiantynivka, Sloviansk and Kramatorsk.
Ukraine's general staff on Thursday morning said Russian forces had attacked locations near Chasiv Yar.
DeepState, a Ukrainian open-source mapping site that charts the front lines, showed Ukraine's forces controlling the western part of the town.
The battle for Chasiv Yar began in April last year, when Russian paratroopers reached its eastern edge. Russian state media reported then that Russian soldiers had begun phoning their Ukrainian counterparts inside the town to demand they surrender or be wiped out by aerial guided bombs.
The town, now in ruins, had a pre-war population of more than 12,000 and its economy was based around a factory that produced reinforced concrete products and clay used in bricks.
It lies just west of Bakhmut, which Russia captured in 2023 after one of the bloodiest battles of the war.

The Ukrainian president said he believed Russia could be 'pushed' to stop the war. 'But if the world doesn't aim to change the regime in Russia, that means even after the war ends, Moscow will still try to destabilise neighbouring countries,' he said on Thursday, speaking virtually to a conference marking the 50th anniversary of the cold war-era Helsinki accords. Russia's overnight strikes wounded at least 150 people, authorities said. Russia fired more than 300 drones and eight cruise missiles at Ukraine – with Kyiv the main target – from late Wednesday to early Thursday, the Ukrainian air force said. One missile tore through a nine-storey residential building in the capital's west, ripping off its facade, authorities said. Zelenskyy said the injured including 16 children and six police officers. It was the largest number of children hurt in a single attack on Kyiv during the war, the rescue service said. Donald Trump criticised Russia's actions in Ukraine, suggesting new sanctions against Moscow were coming. 'Russia – I think it's disgusting what they're doing,' the US president said on Thursday. Russian strikes kill 16 people in Kyiv, including two children
KYIV, July 31 (Reuters) - Russia launched waves of missiles and drones on Kyiv before dawn on Thursday, killing 16 people including two children, and wounding well over 100 others, officials in the Ukrainian capital said. President Volodymyr Zelenskiy, speaking earlier in his nightly video address, put the death toll at 14 and said rescue operations were continuing into the evening. The Interior Ministry said more than 1,200 police and rescuers were tackling the aftermath. Ukraine's national rescue service said the toll rose to 16 after another body had been retrieved from underneath rubble. Zelenskiy said dozens remained in hospital. The rescue service said 16 of the injured were children, the largest number of children hurt in a single attack on the city since Russia started its full-scale invasion almost 3-1/2 years ago. In an earlier post on Telegram, the president said Russia had launched more than 300 drones and eight missiles. "Today the world has once again seen Russia's response to our desire for peace ... Therefore, peace without strength is impossible." City authorities announced a day of mourning to be held on Friday. Russia's Defence Ministry said it targeted and hit Ukrainian military airfields and ammunition depots as well as businesses linked to what it called Kyiv's military-industrial complex. Explosions rocked Kyiv from about midnight onward and blazes lit up the night sky. Yurii Kravchuk, 62, stood wrapped in a blanket next to a damaged building with a bandage around his head. He had heard the missile alert but did not get to a shelter in time, he told Reuters. "I started waking up my wife and then there was an explosion. My daughter ended up in the hospital," he said. "The attack was extremely insidious and deliberately calculated to overload the air defence system," Zelenskiy wrote on X.
