England have ‘broken down barriers to winning': Gareth Southgate

Sir Gareth Southgate has said the England team has 'broken down so many barriers to winning' as he received a knighthood for his services to football.
The former manager, who led England to consecutive European Championship finals in 2020 and 2024 and the 2018 World Cup semi-finals, accepted the honour from the Prince of Wales at Windsor Castle on Wednesday.
He is the fourth England boss to be knighted, after Sir Walter Winterbottom, Sir Alf Ramsey and Sir Bobby Robson, and the only manager to lead the England men's team to two major tournament finals.
Southgate said that managing his country for eight years was 'an amazing privilege' but admitted he was 'not missing that either', having resigned from the role following England's 2-1 final defeat to Spain in July last year.
Reflecting on his spell in charge, he told the PA news agency, 'We've broken down so many barriers to winning. Ultimately we didn't quite get to where we wanted to, but we're in a great position now to take things forward.'
Southgate was succeeded as England manager by Thomas Tuchel ahead of next year's World Cup, when it will be 60 years since the men's national side won their only major honour.
Asked how he assessed the squad's chances heading into the tournament, Southgate said: 'What I learned doing the job is it's important that people on the outside respect the space inside, so best that I stay out of the way and let them get on with it.
'They're a brilliant group of players and staff to work with, and I wouldn't be here without everything they contributed and helped me with, so I hope they can go the next step.'
Under Southgate, England ended their 55-year wait for a men's final at Euro 2020, delayed 12 months by Covid, before being agonisingly beaten on penalties by Italy at Wembley.
A late defeat to Spain three years later again saw the side just miss out on silverware.
Southgate took charge of 102 England matches in total to add to the 57 caps he won for the national team as a player between 1995 and 2004.
He was recognised for his services to association football in the New Year Honours in December.

Ronaldo extends stay in Saudi Arabia with Al Nassr

PAMedia/DPA London Cristiano Ronaldo has signed a new two-year deal at Al Nassr. The deal ties Ronaldo, whose contract was due to expire at the end of June, to the Saudi Pro League team beyond his 42nd birthday. Ronaldo wrote on X: 'A new chapter begins. Same passion, same dream. Let's make history together.' A club post announcing the deal said: 'Al Nassr Club Company officially signed a contract extension with Cristiano Ronaldo. 'Al Nassr captain contract will be valid until 2027.' Ronaldo had posted on social media 'the chapter is over' following Al Nassr's final league game of the season last month. The post fuelled speculation that the five-time Ballon d'Or winner was to leave the Riyadh club. Ronaldo joined Al Nassr in December 2022 as a free agent after leaving Manchester United following a controversial interview in which he criticized the Premier League club. He has scored 99 goals in 111 appearances for Al Nassr and netted 35 last season to win the SPL's golden boot award for top scorer. Ronaldo has scored 938 goals for club and country in his career, needing 62 to reach the four-figure mark. Al Nassr are currently without a manager after parting company with Stefano Pioli on Wednesday. Former AC Milan and Inter boss Pioli, who was appointed in September, led Al Nassr to a third-placed finish in the SPL last season, 13 points behind champions Al Ittihad.

Myles Lewis-Skelly signs new long-term deal with Arsenal

PA Media/dpa London Myles Lewis-Skelly has signed a new Arsenal contract on the back of a breakthrough campaign last season. Lewis-Skelly, 18, made 39 appearances for the Gunners last term to establish himself as Mikel Arteta's first-choice left-back. He also earned his first three England caps, becoming the youngest England player to score on his debut in a 2-0 World Cup qualifying win over Albania in March. The teenager has now been rewarded with a new deal, which the PA news agency understands runs for five years. Lewis-Skelly's previous deal was due to expire at the end of next term, and there had been speculation that some of Europe's leading clubs were ready to pounce if Arsenal could not agree fresh terms. However, the academy graduate said he was only interested in staying with the Gunners. 'I'm so proud and happy,' he said on the club website. 'I know those words are simple, but I think they sum up how I feel signing for this club. I'm a fan and it's like a dream come true. 'I've embodied the values of Hale End and come through. I've still got a lot of years ahead of me, so if I can keep staying humble and being a good person, that's the most important thing to me. 'I know I've taken a lot of experience from the games about the positive moments, the mistakes that I've made. I'm definitely more ready now for the next season. I just want to keep learning and keep improving. 'I want a legacy. I want to win everything there is to win in the game. I want to win trophies on the biggest stages whilst being a person that's always learning and stays grounded, which is so important.' He is the second Arsenal player to agree to a new contract this summer following defensive colleague Gabriel.
