Nimisha Priya row: Hopes up as talks progress after Kanthapuram intervenes
A meeting between representatives of prominent scholar and Sufi leader Sheikh Habib Umar bin Hafiz, and the family of Talal Abdo Mahdi, the Yemeni national allegedly killed by nurse Nimisha Priya in 2017, is expected to be held at Dhamar on Tuesday, they said.
The development follows after the 94-year-old Musliyar, who is officially known as Sheikh Abubakr Ahmad and holds the title of Grand Mufti of India, held talks with religious authorities in Yemen.
The meeting with the family will take place on Tuesday at 10 am, Yemeni local time.
Kanthapuram's office said a close relative of the deceased Talal -- who is also the Chief Justice of the Hodeidah State Court and a member of the Yemeni Shura Council --has arrived in Dhamar, Talal's hometown, to take part in today's talks, following the advice of Sheikh Habib Umar.
"The fact that he is a follower of Sheikh Habib Umar's Sufi order and the son of another prominent Sufi leader offers great hope. Along with persuading the family, he is also expected to meet the Attorney General to initiate urgent efforts to postpone the execution scheduled for tomorrow," it said.
"We see the agreement of the family to hold talks with representatives of the Sufi spiritual leader as a positive signal towards our efforts to halt the scheduled execution for the time being," a source said.
Sources said Talal's murder is not just an emotional issue for the family, but also among the tribes and the residents of the Dhamar region.
This is why no one had been able to establish contact with the family until now. "It was only through Kanthapuram's intervention that communication with the family became possible for the first time," they said.
The family agreed to the talks following the advice of Sheikh Habib Umar bin Hafiz.
"Today's discussion is focused on reaching a final decision regarding the acceptance of blood money. As efforts continue to convince the family, Kanthapuram has also requested the Yemeni authorities to temporarily defer the execution scheduled for July 16 --a request the Yemeni administration is expected to consider today," a source said.
Nimisha Priya, a nurse from Palakkad district in Kerala, is facing execution on July 16 for the murder of Mahdi, her Yemeni business partner.
She was sentenced to death in 2020, and her final appeal was rejected in 2023.
She is currently imprisoned in a jail in Sanaa, the capital of Yemen.
The Centre on Monday had informed the Supreme Court that the government could do "nothing much" in the case.
Attorney General R Venkataramani had informed a bench of Justices Vikram Nath and Sandeep Mehta that the government was doing "utmost possible".
"The Government of India is trying its best," Venkataramani said, "and has also engaged with some sheikhs who are very influential people there.

Xi-Jaishankar meeting, Nvidia's Jensen Huang in Beijing, and GDP data
Minister of External Affairs S Jaishankar met Chinese President Xi Jinping during his first visit to China after the 2020 standoff along the Line of Actual Control (LAC) began. Jaishankar was in Tianjin to attend the meeting of foreign ministers from Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) countries on July 14 and 15. China had another high-profile visitor this week in Jensen Huang, the CEO of the tech giant NVIDIA. Earlier this month, it became the first public company in history to achieve a market capitalisation of $4 trillion. Huang spoke in Mandarin at an event in Beijing and signed autographs as part of what's been described as a 'charm offensive'. Finally, as we mentioned last week, China's latest GDP numbers for April to June were released, revealing a better-than-expected 5.2% growth. Here is a closer look at these developments: Following Defence Minister Rajnath Singh's June visit to China, which holds the rotating SCO presidency this year, Jaishankar went to Tianjin in northeastern China last week. While Singh refused to sign a draft statement that did not mention the Pahalgam terror attack, Jaishankar also used the platform to speak about terrorism. He said the SCO was founded in 2001 to combat the 'three evils' of 'terrorism, separatism and extremism', and that the grouping needed to take an 'uncompromising position on this challenge'. In a post on X, the minister said he 'Apprised President Xi of the recent development of our bilateral ties. Value the guidance of our leaders in that regard.' UPSHOT: The visit came as Nvidia announced on Tuesday that it may soon sell its H20 chips again. They were meant for the Chinese market after its higher-quality chips were restricted by the US government. However, these chips were also prevented from being sold in China later. It was part of the policy to deprive China of key AI technology for strategic and security reasons, as the capability gap between the two countries narrows. 'NVIDIA is filing applications to sell the NVIDIA H20 GPU again. The U.S. government has assured NVIDIA that licenses will be granted, and NVIDIA hopes to start deliveries soon,' a statement from the company said. Since the second quarter covered the period when Trump announced his 'Liberation Day' tariffs, the release of this data was eagerly awaited to see how the Chinese economy fared. Undoubtedly, maintaining an above-5% growth rate is a positive sign, but the data also showed lower growth in domestic consumption, something long described as a problem area. Bid to defame kanwariyas as unruly: Yogi says Kanwar Yatra progressing peacefully

'Today, the Yatra is progressing peacefully and with devotion, yet some label it as unruly. These are the same forces that try to mislead and provoke tribal communities. We must remain alert to such divisive elements,' he warned. He condemned attempts to fuel caste and communal tensions via fake social media identities. Recalling a specific incident, he said, 'A few years ago, there was a case of arson. I remarked then that such an act likely didn't belong to any particular community. The investigation later confirmed that although the person involved was wearing a saffron scarf, he was shouting 'Ya Allah'. These deceptive individuals must be exposed and excluded from society if we are to protect national unity.' He added that the same forces who spread caste-based hatred online had also tried to provoke tribal communities against the nation. He cited a recent incident from Jaunpur, where a tall 'Tazia' was constructed in violation of safety norms and came into contact with a high-tension wire, tragically claiming three lives. 'Following this, an attempt was made to block roads and create unrest. I instructed the police to take strict action. Those disrupting social harmony must understand that peace and order are paramount,' he asserted. In his address, Adityanath emphasised that tribal society has always been the 'bedrock of the country's Sanatan tradition.' He highlighted its enduring role in defending the nation and safeguarding cultural values across eras. Referring to the Ramayana, he said, 'When Lord Rama was in exile and Mother Sita was abducted, it was the tribal community that stood by him, despite the absence of Ayodhya's army. Similarly, Maharana Pratap reorganised his army in the forests of the Aravalli Range with the support of tribal groups and resisted Akbar. Chhatrapati Shivaji, too, relied on the Vanvasi (forest dwellers) society to lay the foundation of the Hindavi Swarajya.' The Chief Minister emphasised that Indian tradition has never confined Hindu identity to temple visits or scriptural belief. 'Both the believer and the non-believer are Hindus. Charvak and Lord Buddha did not accept the Vedas, yet they are deeply respected in our tradition. Then why question the identity of tribal communities in the context of Hinduism?' he asked.
