CNN expert praises president Trump's use of tariffs
CNN's data expert Harry Enten called Donald Trump the most influential president of the 21st century. Enten - who often breaks down polling issues for the left-leaning network - said that Trump is 'remaking' America in a way George W. Bush, Barack Obama and Joe Biden didn't. He credits that to Trump's hardline policy to fix the southern border and even his controversial tariff policies. 'I can't think of a more influential president during this century, and it starts here with tariffs,' Enten said. 'He said he was going to raise tariffs, and despite the claims otherwise, he is in fact doing that.' He noted that tariffs are now 'nine times as high as it was last year. The highest since the 90s.' Enten then pivoted to how Trump has influenced America via his immigration policies. 'The other big thing that Trump ran on was immigration. How about net migration in the United States? Get this, it's down. It's going to be down at least 60%. We may be dealing with, get this, negative net migration to the United States in 2025,' he said. He added that this would be the first time America had negative net migration in a half a century. 'So Donald Trump has always run on tariffs, and he's running a hawkish line on immigration,' he said. 'And on both of those issues we are seeing record high tariff rates for this century going all the way back, well back into the early part of the 20th century. And when it comes to immigration, net migration We are seeing record low levels way down from where we were during the Biden administration.' Trump's influence and popularity lines up with a recent exclusive Daily Mail/J.L. Partners poll, even as they give him failing grades for his handling of the Jeffrey Epstein files. Forty-nine percent of voters now approve of Trump's job performance as president, up one point from the tracking survey conducted earlier in July. But he remains underwater as 51 percent disapprove of Trump's job performance, down one point from earlier in the month. The margin of error in the survey of 1,007 registered voters is 3.1 percent. The poll numbers suggest Trump is surviving politically during a punishing news cycle consumed by the Epstein files and his administration's failure to disclose them as he promised during his presidential campaign. The president's job approval is up one percentage point from June and remains his highest rating since May. 'The news saga might have seemed terrible for Trump in the last few days, but it isn't having an impact on his approval rating,' James Johnson, JL Partners co-founder told the Daily Mail. 'In fact, we think it's going up, from 48 percent to 49 percent, making this his best approval rating since May. His ratings with the base is holding up too, unchanged on 91 percent with Republicans,' Johnson continued. But Trump's strong job approval ratings does not carry over to his handling of the Epstein files. Forty-two percent of voters disapprove of his handling of the issue while just 27 percent approve. A significant number of voters, 20 percent, did not appear to care about the case as they neither approved nor disapproved Trump's handling of the issue. In the Oval Office on Wednesday, Trump referred to the ongoing saga as a 'witch hunt' indicating he was tired of answering questions from the media about it. Despite the president's best efforts to put the issue behind him, few voters believe in the administration's assessment of the case. Only fifteen percent in the poll said they believed the Justice Department's memo released by Attorney General Pam Bondi concluding that Epstein committed [self-murder] in prison and that the infamous man did not have a 'client list' they could release. Forty-seven percent said they did not believe the administration's account of the Epstein case, and that they believed there was more secrets to uncover. Twenty-three percent said they believed the Trump administration memo, but that there was more to uncover in the case. Ninety percent of the Republican voter base continue to grant the president solid approval ratings, despite their misgivings about the Epstein files. The poll was conducted as Trump furiously contested a Wall Street Journal report that he had signed a letter to Epstein for his 50th birthday which concluded: 'Happy Birthday - and may every day be another wonderful secret,' and featured a hand-drawn image of a unclothed woman as well as his signature. Trump decried the news article as 'fake' and filed a $10 billion lawsuit against the company. 'They are judging Trump on other issues - such as the economy, the southern border, and how he is actually running the country. Their grumbles on the Epstein handling are not enough for them to turn on their man,' Johnson said.

Netherlands to buy €500 million of US arms for Ukraine war under new Nato scheme
The Netherlands will contribute €500mn (£434mn) to purchase US military equipment for Ukraine, becoming the first Nato member to support a new mechanism aimed at supplying American weapons to Kyiv. Donald Trump said last month that the US would provide weapons to Ukraine, paid for by European allies, but he did not provide details on how this would work. Dutch Defence Minister Ruben Brekelmans announced on Monday that the Netherlands will contribute €500mn to the mechanism called the Nato Prioritised Ukraine Requirements List (PURL) initiative. Mr Brekelmans said this would include Patriot systems and missiles – a mobile surface-to-air missile defence system built by US-based Raytheon Technologies. Ukrainian president Volodymyr Zelensky has persistently asked Western allies for more defensive capabilities, among them Patriot systems and missiles, to fend off daily missile and drone attacks from Russia. In response to the decision, Mr Zelensky thanked the Netherlands. "Ukraine, and thus the whole of Europe, will be better protected from Russian terror," he wrote on X. "I am sincerely grateful to the Netherlands for their substantial contribution to strengthening Ukraine's air shield," he added. Nato chief Mark Rutte, a former Dutch prime minister, welcomed the announcement and said he had encouraged other alliance members to participate in the new mechanism. 'This is about getting Ukraine the equipment it urgently needs now to defend itself against Russian aggression,' he said in a statement. 'I have written to all Nato Allies, urging them to contribute towards this burden-sharing initiative, and I expect further significant announcements from other Allies soon,' Mr Rutte added. Nato said it would coordinate the new initiative, which is funded by European members of the alliance and Canada. It will be divided into packages worth approximately $500mn (£434mn), the military alliance said. It said in a statement: 'Working closely with Ukraine and the United States, the Supreme Allied Commander Europe, Alexus Grynkewich, will validate packages that correspond to Ukraine's needs, such as air defence, ammunition and other critical equipment for rapid delivery from US stockpiles". Matthew Whitaker, the US ambassador to Nato, told news agency Reuters that he expected many more countries to announce they will participate over the coming weeks. The Patriot, short for Phased Array Tracking Radar for Intercept on Target, is a mobile surface-to-air missile defence system developed by Raytheon Technologies. It is considered one of the most advanced air defence systems in the US arsenal, and it has been in service since the 1980s. The system can intercept aircraft, tactical ballistic missiles and cruise missiles, depending on the interceptor used. A newly produced single Patriot battery costs over $1bn (£746m), including $400m (£298m) for the system and $690m (£515m) for the missiles in a battery, according to the Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS). Patriot interceptors are estimated to cost around $4 million per missile, CSIS says. Russia says it sees the supply of Patriots as a direct escalation. Foreign ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said earlier this year that supplying more systems to Ukraine would delay the chances of peace.

'Heartbroken' Ed Kelce suffering with 'enormous void' after death of his partner at age 74
Ed Kelce, the father of Travis and Jason Kelce, is reportedly 'heartbroken' over the loss of his partner, Maureen Maguire. Maureen died on Friday at the age of 74. According to her obituary, which was shared by the Kelce patriarch, she was surrounded by loved ones. And it has now been revealed that Ed, who divorced the NFL siblings' mom Donna over 10 years ago, has been left distraught at the loss. 'Maureen wasn't just his partner, she was his person. They were a team. They shared everything… games, concerts, travel, dogs, dinners with family. He's feeling an enormous void,' PEOPLE reported. Ed has remained publicly quiet on Maguire's passing. He did, however, share pictures from their time together, including a snap with Taylor Swift, the famous girlfriend of his youngest son Travis. The photo showed the three of them in Kansas City Chiefs merch, with the singer holding a card and what appears to be a friendship bracelet. Ed also shared a photograph with Maguire from Saturday Night Live in March 2023 in New York, when three-time Super Bowl winner Travis was the guest host. In an interview last year with the Los Angeles Times, Ed revealed how his girlfriend and Swift had struck up a bond. Maureen, according to Ed, jokingly told Swift 'hey, that's my boyfriend' when the singer took a selfie with Travis and Jason's father at an NFL game. Maureen's obituary describes how, thanks to Kelce's influence, she developed a strong interest in football in the later years of her life. 'She also grew an unexpected love for football later in life, sharing many laughs and adventures with her beloved friend Ed Kelce and her loyal dog Butch,' the obituary said. 'Together, they traveled often and attended football games and concerts, and embraced every opportunity to enjoy life to the fullest.' It isn't known when Ed first met Maureen, or how. But Ed and Donna Kelce, the mother of Travis and Jason, went their separate ways after nearly 25 years of marriage around the time their sons were at college. They remain friends to this day, with Travis and Jason becoming two of the most famous names in the NFL. 'I don't hate him. We're friends to this day. We get along great,' Donna once said of her ex-husband Ed. 'We were like a tag team with you two (Travis and Jason). We got to do all sorts of fun things. When one of you had to go out of town, the other person would help with the other child. It was perfect.' In a 2023 documentary about the family, Ed explained that he and Donna stayed together to be better parents. 'If we had split as we probably both would have preferred, that would have been a nightmare with the logistics, getting kids where they had to be and providing all the support,' he said. Travis and Jason have not yet commented on Maguire's passing. Travis is currently in training camp with the Chiefs ahead of the upcoming 2025 season, which for his team starts on September 5 in Brazil against the Los Angeles Chargers. The Kelce family saw their fame reach unprecedented levels in September 2023, when Travis and Taylor's romance was confirmed by Swift attending a Chiefs game alongside Donna at Arrowhead Stadium in Kansas City.
