
Malabar Gold & Diamonds weighs entry into lab-grown diamond segment
The company is studying consumer interest in lab-grown diamonds and evaluating how best to position its offering, said M.P. Ahammed, chairman of the Kerala-headquartered group. 'We want to come in with a different proposition with a separate identity and not mix it with natural diamonds, as customers are different. We will formalize something,' he said on the sidelines of a press conference in Delhi.
Malabar has not yet set a timeline for its venture.
'Malabar is always open to understanding customer needs. Lab-grown is definitely in the market…We are still doing the research and understanding whether consumers like it. We don't want to do anything with a short-term view,' added O. Asher, managing director.
If it moves ahead, Malabar would be among the few national jewellery chains in India to enter this space. Last year, Senco Gold Ltd began piloting lab-grown diamonds under a sub-brand called Sennes.
India's overall diamond market is estimated at $6.2 billion in FY25, with lab-grown diamonds accounting for just $0.4 billion, according to Wazir Advisors. Both segments are expected to grow, with natural diamonds projected to reach $8.6 billion and lab-grown $0.6 billion by FY28.
While India and China have emerged as major producers of lab-grown diamonds, retail adoption in both markets has been slow, executives said. Lab-grown diamonds are typically priced at a significant discount to natural ones and have found takers among a mix of jewellery startups and traditional family-run jewellers looking to diversify.
Malabar, which primarily caters to the wedding segment with gold jewellery as its mainstay, also retails solitaires and engagement rings. The company operates over 390 stores across 13 countries and reported an annual turnover of $6.2 billion calendar year 2024.
The company is also responding to the impact of high gold prices, which have weighed on consumer demand. In April, gold touched a high of ₹ 96,875 per 10 grams, prompting a visible correction in volumes, as per industry executives.
'Consumers with a budget of ₹ 1 lakh cannot increase their spending, so we have seen a correction in volumes,' Asher said. 'We are trying to take more market share by coming up with different programmes and categories of products. We are also offering jewellery in various carats.'

'We are trying to explore a little bit in 18 karat,' Asher added. 'We have come up with various innovations to reduce the budget without reducing the look.'
The company aims to open at least 50 new stores in India this fiscal as it expands its retail footprint.

Kolkata, Jul 21 (PTI) State-run UCO Bank on Monday reported a 10.16 per cent year-on-year rise in net profit to Rs 607 crore for the April-June quarter of the 2025-26 financial year, driven by strong growth in advances and improved asset quality. 'Interest income from advances alone increased from around Rs 6,000 crore to Rs 6,400 crore year-on-year. Additionally, operating expenses increased by only 4 per cent, disproportionately lower than required, further contributing to profitability,' he said. The guidance for net interest margin (NIM) has been revised downwards to a range of 2.9-3 per cent from the earlier projection of 3-3.10 per cent due to 'front-loading' loan repricing, he said. The bank's operating profit for the June quarter in the current fiscal rose 18.24 per cent to Rs 1,562 crore, while net interest income (NII) increased by 6.61 per cent to Rs 2,403 crore during the period, the lender said in a statement. The total business grew 13.51 per cent to Rs 5,23,736 crore as of June 30, 2025, supported by a 16.48 per cent jump in gross advances to Rs 2,25,101 crore. Deposits rose 11.37 per cent to Rs 2,98,635 crore, the Kolkata-headquartered bank said. Net Interest margin for the quarter stood at 2.96 per cent, it said. The growth in the retail, agriculture, and MSME (RAM) segment remained strong, with advances in this category rising 23.47 per cent year-on-year to Rs 1,25,927 crore, the lender said. Retail advances grew 30.73 per cent to Rs 56,195 crore, led by home and vehicle loans, which increased 17.92 per cent and 66.94 per cent, respectively. The bank expects retail slippages to remain controlled and range-bound in the coming quarters, with no significant increase anticipated, the official said. The domestic corporate advances stood at Rs 74,051 crore, a year-on-year growth of 14.61 per cent. The bank intends to grow its corporate loan book in the range of 12-14 per cent in the upcoming quarters, Kumar said. He stated that lending for startups is expected to gain traction with clarity on guarantee. The asset quality saw an improvement with gross non-performing assets (NPA) declining to 2.63 per cent from 3.32 per cent a year ago, while net NPA fell to 0.45 per cent from 0.78 per cent. The provision coverage ratio stood at 96.88 per cent. The bank's capital adequacy ratio stood at 18.39 per cent, with Tier-I capital at 16.36 per cent. As of June 30, 2025, the lender operated 3,305 branches, including two overseas branches in Hong Kong and Singapore, and had 16,803 customer touchpoints comprising ATMs and business correspondents. ADIA signs a definitive agreement to invest $200 million in medical devices firm Meril
Abu Dhabi Investment Authority (ADIA) has signed a definitive agreement to invest $200 million (about Rs1,725 crore) for a 3% stake in medical devices maker Micro Life Sciences Pvt Ltd (Meril). The investment by a wholly-owned subsidiary of ADIA pegged Meril's enterprise valuation at $6.6 billion, the Vapi, Gujarat-based company said in a statement. Post the investment, Meril will be backed by two major global investors ADIA, and US private equity firm Warburg Pincus. The deal is subject to Competition Commission of India (CCI) approval. 'This investment by ADIA reinforces confidence in Meril's long-term vision and global ambitions,' said Sanjeev Bhatt, senior vice president-strategy at Meril. 'This investment will enable us to accelerate growth, attract world-class talent, and further strengthen clinical research efforts as we work towards improving the quality of human life through advanced healthcare solutions.' Meril was founded in 2006 by the Bilakhia Group after divesting their agrochemical business to Bayer, and the Micro lnks business to Hubergroup—both from Germany. In 2022, the promoters tapped Warburg Pincus to raise Rs 1,575 crore by selling a 14% stake in Meril, and Rohit Kothari's Anchorage Capital for Rs 200 crore by divesting a 2% stake at a valuation of about Rs 11,000 crore. In the three years since, Meril closed fundraisings for another 3% shareholdings while its valuation surged more than fivefold to nearly Rs 60,000 crore. Nayara Energy mulls legal recourse on EU sanctions, reiterates investment commitment
New Delhi: Caught in the crosshairs of Western sanctions, Rosneft-backed Nayara Energy has hit back at the European Union's (EU) move to blacklist its Vadinar refinery in Gujarat, calling the action baseless, unilateral and a breach of international law. In a statement on Monday, the company said it is actively exploring all legal options and that it will counter the EU's decision, which it claims undermines India's sovereignty and disregards global norms. Contesting the sanctions, Nayara reiterated its deep commitment to India's energy security and long-term growth, announcing plans to invest over ₹ 70,000 crore in the long term across petrochemicals, ethanol plants, marketing infrastructure expansion, among other projects. The company, which operates India's second-largest single-site refinery and contributes 8% of the country's refining capacity, emphazised that its operations fully comply with Indian laws. "We categorically state that this unilateral move by the European Union is founded on baseless assertions, representing an undue extension of authority that ignores both international law and the sovereignty of India," the company said. Nayara Energy, which operates the 20 million tonne refinery in Vadinar, said it remains committed to India's growth story and has invested over ₹ 14,000 crores since August 2017 in various projects in India, including upgrading existing refining facilities, investing in a new petrochemical plant, and other new infrastructure projects. 'Nayara Energy will continue to invest over ₹ 70,000 crore in the long term towards petrochemicals, ethanol plants, marketing infrastructure expansion and refinery reliability including ESG projects,' the statement said. 'We are equally committed to community development, with an annual CSR budget of ₹ 200 crore dedicated to meeting the diverse needs of the communities we serve.' Outlining its operations in India, Nayara said its operations are closely aligned with India's national priorities, as it contributes around 8% to the country's total refining capacity, 7% of India's retail petrol pump network and about 8% of polypropylene capacity. It also employs over 55,000 direct and indirect employees across the country. "Our ongoing investments in domestic infrastructure, job creation, with continued investments in petrochemicals and retail network expansion underscores our unwavering commitment to the growing Indian market and to advancing the country's ambition of achieving energy self-sufficiency," Nayara Energy said. The company said since August 2017, it has contributed over ₹ 2.5 lakh crore in cumulative direct and indirect taxes in India. In August 2017, Rosneft closed the strategic transaction for the acquisition of 49.13% of shares of Essar Oil Ltd from Essar Energy Holdings Ltd (EOL) and its affiliates, and in 2018 rebranded it as Nayara Energy. Moscow-headquartered Rosneft Oil Co. had on Sunday described the EU's sanction on Nayara Energy's refinery in Gujarat as 'unjustified and illegal'. Rosneft had said it is not a controlling shareholder of Nayara Energy, as the company's share in the authorized capital of the enterprise is less than 50%, and the Indian enterprise is managed by an independent board of directors. On Friday, in an attempt to target Russia's ability to raise revenues from its oil and energy sector as it wages a prolonged war with Ukraine, the EU unveiled sanctions on Nayara's Vadinar refinery and also lowered the price cap on Russian oil by 15% to $47.6 a barrel from $60. Among other steps, it also imposed sanctions on 'shadow fleet ships' that are largely used for moving crude oil from Russia. Nayara Energy flayed the EU for adopting double-standards. "While many European countries continue to import Russian energy through various sources, they take a high moral ground by chastising and sanctioning an Indian asset for processing Russian crude largely used by its domestic population of 1.4 billion Indians and businesses," the company said. Following the EU's move, Randhir Jaiswal, spokesperson of the ministry of external affairs (MEA), said in a statement late Friday that India does not subscribe to any unilateral sanction measures. 'We are a responsible actor and remain fully committed to our legal obligations,' the spokesperson said. The MEA spokesperson said the Indian government considers the provision of energy security a responsibility of paramount importance to meet the basic needs of its citizens. "We would stress that there should be no double standards, especially when it comes to energy trade," Jaiswal added.
