Chinese open-source AI models occupy top spots among global developers: ranking

China is home to the world's top artificial intelligence (AI) models that are open-sourced, according to an American benchmarking platform created by researchers from the University of California, Berkeley.
Kimi K2, MiniMax M1, Qwen 3 and a variant of DeepSeek R1 were ranked as the world's top open-sourced AI models, beating out offerings like Google's Gemma 3-72B and Meta's Llama 4-Maverick, LMArena said in a report on Friday.
The winners were determined by 'comparing them side by side and casting votes for the better response', LMArena said on its website. The platform, previously known as Chatbot Arena, has been used by major AI companies like OpenAI and Google to assess their AI models.
LMArena highlighted the progress of Kimi K2, the top model on the list, which was launched by Chinese AI start-up Moonshot AI on July 11. Moonshot said it open-sourced two versions of Kimi K2.
On its X account on Friday, LMArena said Kimi K2 was 'one of the most impressive' open-source large-language models (LLMs) to date, adding that it was gaining popularity because its user responses were 'humorous without sounding too robotic'.
DeepSeek R1-0528, a fine-tuned version of the model launched by Hangzhou-based start-up DeepSeek at the beginning of the year, came in second as it was 'strong in multi-turn dialogue and reasoning tasks', the platform said.

Chinese aerospace engineers have a revolutionary software design, which they say will allow them to overcome a major barrier to stealth aircraft development The new platform allows plane designers to have as many design variables as they want without increasing computing load – a feat long deemed impossible in aviation circles. The researchers described their innovation as breaking the 'dimensionality curse' and used the US Navy's X-47B, a demonstration stealth drone, to illustrate how the system worked. Once celebrated for its carrier landings and autonomous aerial refuelling, the X-47B project was cancelled in 2015 because of unresolved trade-offs between stealth, aerodynamics and propulsion. However, the Chinese software design delivered dramatic improvements to the design with 740 variables, including measures to reduce flight drag and its radar signature, as well as improving engine thrust while maintaining airflow stability. 'Traditional global optimisation algorithms face the curse of dimensionality problem,' wrote the team led by Huang Jiangtao from the China Aerodynamics Research and Development Centre in a peer-reviewed paper published in Acta Aeronautica et Astronautica Sinica earlier this month. The shape of components such as wing leading edges and engine inlet ducts affects two crucial things: how smoothly the plane flies and how easily it can be detected by enemy radars.

ASMPT, a global supplier of equipment and software used in the semiconductor and electronics manufacturing sectors, reported revenue of HK$6.53 billion (US$837.6 million) in the first six months of the year, which slid 0.7 per cent year on year, even as bookings grew 12.4 per cent to HK$7.11 billion. Net profit was down 30.9 per cent to HK$216.9 million. Still, the company's shares rose 3.27 per cent to close at HK$63.20 on Wednesday. ASMPT said it expected third-quarter revenue to be between US$445 million and US$505 million, a 10.8 per cent year-on-year growth that was 'above market consensus', on the back of sustained AP revenue and improved sales at its surface mount technology business. Amazon Web Services to close Shanghai AI lab amid US-China tech tensions

Amazon Web Services (AWS) has joined its US peers Microsoft and IBM in downsizing artificial intelligence research activities in mainland China amid ongoing geopolitical tensions. The company has decided to close its seven-year-old AI Shanghai Lablet due to 'China-US strategic realignment', according to Wang Minjie, the facility's chief applied scientist, in an announcement posted on Chinese social media platform WeChat on Tuesday. The announcement has since been circulated online and its authenticity was confirmed by the South China Morning Post. Amazon spokesman Brad Glasser said in an emailed response that the company 'has made the difficult business decision to eliminate some roles across particular teams in AWS', after a thorough review of its organisation, priorities and future plans. Glasser added that the company would 'support the employees throughout their transition'. Initially announced in 2018 at the World AI Conference (WAIC) in Shanghai, the AWS lab focused on open-source projects such as the Deep Graph Library (DGL), a scalable framework for deep learning on graphs, and fundamental research in the area of graph neural networks, which analyse data that can be represented as a graph.
