
Why being a nationalist means buying local
We live in a time where consumerism has gone global. Social media floods us with influencers flaunting foreign brands, encouraging us to chase products from abroad. In this atmosphere, buying local can be dismissed as backward or unnecessarily expensive. Omanis frequently complain that the local buying power is low, that the choices are few, or that the products are outdated. But I see this as a classic catch-22. If we all refrain from purchasing locally, then of course local markets will stagnate. The merchandise will sit on shelves, unsold, until it becomes irrelevant. Businesses will not take the risk to import better goods, nor will local manufacturers innovate, simply because the demand is not there.
To me, every Omani rial spent locally is a vote for the future of our economy. When I choose to buy from a local shop instead of flying to Dubai for a cheaper version, I am signalling to that business owner — and the larger economic ecosystem — that there is value in staying, growing and evolving in Oman. I am contributing to the circulation of money within the country, rather than letting it disappear into foreign economies that have already reached maturity.
This is why I rarely haggle in places like Muttrah Souq, even when bargaining is expected. Many view this as foolish or naive, but I see it as an investment. That small vendor I pay a few rials more to may be supporting a family or trying to keep a centuries-old trade alive. My extra rial might be insignificant to me, but to them, it could mean the ability to restock, repair, or reinvest. This is also why I don't object too strongly to buying from larger, monopolised companies — so long as they operate within Oman, employ Omanis, and contribute to our national development. Even in these big companies, every job created matters, every tax paid supports public infrastructure and every success story adds to our national pride.
There is also an emotional dimension to buying local. Supporting Omani products helps preserve our culture, our craftsmanship and our stories. Whether it's an abaya stitched in Muscat, dates harvested from an interior farm, a piece of silver jewellery from Nizwa, or perfume mixed in a small workshop, these goods carry a sense of place and belonging that imported goods simply cannot replicate. When I wear or use them, I feel rooted. I feel that I am participating in the collective narrative of what it means to be Omani.
Nationalism is not only about waving a flag on National Day or sharing patriotic messages on social media. It is also about the quieter, everyday choices we make — where we eat, what we wear, how we shop. If we all took pride in investing in our local economy, Oman's markets would evolve. Products would improve. Innovation would follow. Opportunities for Omanis would increase. The economy would diversify. And our national identity would be strengthened from within.
So no, I don't travel to buy what I can find here. I pay a little more, and I do so gladly. Because in every rial I spend, I am choosing Oman.

Sur Industrial City attracts investment worth $25mn
Sur – Sur Industrial City has signed a contract with Al Ghaith Industries for the establishment of a factory for the production of Trichlorosilane. As per this agreement, the city, under the Public Establishment for Industrial Estates 'Madayn', will receive an investment of over US$25mn for the facility to be built on an area of 20,000sqm, officials informed. This value-added project is set to boost the growth of the chemical and energy sectors in the sultanate, they added. Nasser al Mabsali, Director General of Sur Industrial City, said that the project would open new horizons for high-purity silicon manufacturing, which is the cornerstone of renewable energy and electronics industries. 'This investment represents a significant value addition to South Sharqiyah governorate in general and Sur Industrial City in particular. The project will support the localisation of advanced technology-based industries and create employment opportunities for Omani cadres,' Mabsali pointed out. Almamoon al Baadani, CEO of Al Ghaith Industries, highlighted that the Trichlorosilane plant represents a major milestone in the sultanate's chemical sector. 'This will be the first facility of its kind in the Middle East, and several projects are planned over the coming years, thanks to Oman's attractive investment environment,' Baadani said. He noted that the factory's commercial production is expected to commence by the end of the first quarter of 2027, expressing gratitude to the management of Madayn, represented by Sur Industrial City, for their efforts in facilitating the investment process and advancing the industrial sector.

Oman to unveil initiatives in Cybersecurity, AI at COMEX 2025
Muscat – The Ministry of Transport, Communications and Information Technology (MTCIT) has announced plans to launch several digital initiatives in the fields of cybersecurity and artificial intelligence (AI) in September 2025. The announcement was made during a press conference on Tuesday outlining details of COMEX 2025, which will take place at the Oman Convention and Exhibition Centre from September 7 to 10. The event is expected to host more than 300 local and international companies. H E Dr Ali bin Amer al Shidhani, Undersecretary of MTCIT for Communications and Information Technology, said the ministry aims to position COMEX as a strategic platform to promote investment opportunities in the ICT sector. The event will support emerging technology firms, enhance local content, encourage public-private partnerships, and foster international collaboration. This year's edition will see widespread participation from companies, specialised pavilions, and a range of activities. MTCIT will showcase key projects and initiatives under the National Digital Economy Programme at its dedicated pavilion. The exhibition will also feature a series of workshops and events covering themes such as digital investment, e-gaming, digital tourism, and creative content. These activities are designed to attract startups and investors and to stimulate growth in Oman's digital economy. COMEX 2025 will host the Cybersecurity Forum, which will highlight national efforts and achievements in the field. The forum aims to support local startups and young Omanis in developing advanced cybersecurity solutions while also drawing on international expertise. Another major highlight will be the AI and Quantum Computing Forum, which seeks to raise awareness of advanced technologies and promote research and industrial partnerships. Discussions will focus on applications of quantum AI across key sectors. A hackathon focused on cybersecurity solutions will also be held as part of the event. Dr Shidhani pointed to the success of COMEX 2024, which resulted in the signing of 60 agreements and memoranda of understanding worth over RO85mn – a 112% increase compared to 2023. The previous edition featured more than 60 workshops, 25 startup events, 100 expert speakers, and 350 participating entities, drawing over 80,000 visitors. He also noted the strong performance of Oman's ICT sector, which grew by 10.6% in Q1 2025 compared to the same period in 2024. Local investment in AI reached nearly RO60mn by the end of last year, driven by national initiatives focused on advanced technologies. COMEX 2025 will include a digital investment zone designed to attract local and international investors, localise emerging technologies, and promote Oman as a regional hub for digital investment. A dedicated pavilion for tech startups will also be established, offering specialised workshops.

New green steel project planned in Oman
MUSCAT: Singapore-based Meranti Green Steel (MGS), a leading player in low-carbon steel production in the Asia-Pacific region, has announced further progress in its plans to invest in a major green steel project at the Special Economic Zone at Duqm (SEZAD) in southeastern Oman. Project capacity details and investment figures have not yet been disclosed. However, the company announced in a post on Tuesday, July 8, 2025, that it has received a provisional commitment for the supply of natural gas for the project from the Omani authorities. 'Meranti Green Steel has received the conditional gas allocation from IGC in Oman. With the project site confirmed and raw material supply in place, the foundation for our green iron production in Duqm is now established,' Meranti commented in the post, referencing the Integrated Gas Company (IGC)—the sole aggregator and supplier of natural gas in the Sultanate of Oman. The company further noted: 'Discussions with a range of potential green hydrogen partners are underway, and we are engaging closely with our financing partners, including KfW IPEX.' The latter refers to the import-export financing arm of KfW IPEX-Bank, a major German-based financial institution. The announcement underscores Duqm's rising international profile as a prime destination for investment in so-called 'hard-to-abate' sectors, particularly steel and aluminium manufacturing—industries traditionally associated with high carbon emissions. With several large-scale green hydrogen projects set to be implemented near Duqm, the anticipated availability of green hydrogen as a clean energy source is boosting the zone's attractiveness as a hub for low-carbon heavy industry. Jindal Duqm Steel (formerly Vulcan Green Steel)—part of India's Jindal Group—is already advancing construction work on the first phase of a 5 million tonnes per annum (mtpa) hydrogen-enabled green steel plant in Duqm, with an estimated investment of around $3 billion. In addition, two other international consortiums have announced plans to establish low-carbon iron projects in Duqm. Kobe Steel, in partnership with Mitsui & Co, has signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with Oman's Public Authority for Special Economic Zones and Free Zones (OPAZ) and the Port of Duqm Company to explore a low-carbon iron metallics facility in the SEZ. The project aims to produce 5 million tonnes annually of direct reduced iron (DRI), starting with natural gas and transitioning to hydrogen in the future. Similarly, Brazilian mining giant Vale has announced plans to invest in a Green Metallic Mega Hub in Duqm, intended to produce low-carbon DRI as feedstock for steel mills across the wider Middle East region. Meranti is concurrently developing an integrated green steel project in Rayong, Thailand, with a planned capacity of around 2.5 million tonnes per year. The facility, which integrates DRI, HBI (Hot Briquetted Iron), Electric Arc Furnace (EAF), and a Hot Strip Mill, will produce certified green Hot Rolled Coil (HRC) steel. Operations are scheduled to begin in late 2027 or early 2028. 'The (Oman) green iron project is central to our integrated green steel value chain. It will not only feed our low-emission steel plant in Thailand, but will also serve emerging HBI demand from European offtakers. With competitive access to gas and green hydrogen, we are confident that green iron from Oman can boost the competitiveness of European steelmakers and help secure jobs—not threaten them,' Meranti added in its post.
