"Elio" lands Pixar's worst box office debut

Axios5 days ago

Disney's Pixar saw its worst-ever box office debut over the weekend with its sci-fi adventure film "Elio" earning just $21 million domestically after reportedly spending at least $250 million on production and marketing.
Why it matters: The animated movie is a costly outlier to other family-friendly films that have packed cinemas and helped theaters toward a post-pandemic rebound.
By the numbers: "Elio" came in third place domestically over the weekend, behind Universal's "How To Train Your Dragon" at $37 million and Sony's "28 Years Later" at $30 million, per Comscore.
"Elio" brought in just $14 million overseas for $35 million in total, per Comscore.
The big picture: With the exception of "Inside Out 2" last summer, Pixar has struggled to regain the box office momentum of its dominance in the 2000s and 2010s.
"Luca" and "Turning Red" released straight to Disney+ in 2021 and 2022, respectively. "Lightyear" underwhelmed at the box office in the summer of 2022.
Pixar's previous opening weekend low was "Elemental" in the summer of 2023 at $29.5 million, though it ended up becoming a sleeper hit and brought in nearly $500 million globally.
"Elio" is Pixar's only theatrical release slated for 2025.
Yes, but: "Elio" has garnered positive early reviews with an 84% critics score and 91% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes.
Flashback: Activist investor Nelson Peltz took aim at Disney's studio struggles during his failed proxy fight, telling the FT that the company had "lost first place in animation." Though he lost that battle for board seats, his critique of Disney's creative outputs still resonates.

‘Predator: Badlands' Joins Disney's San Diego Comic-Con Plans

The hunt will be on at San Diego Comic-Con, where Predator: Badlands will get the spotlight. Per the Hollywood Reporter, the sci-fi film will get a Hall H panel during the convention weekend. It'll be the second big Disney movie of the fall season to make an appearance at the famed Hall, joining October's Tron: Ares. Both films will fill in for a lack of Marvel at this year's convention, and it'll be the Predator franchise's first theatrical movie to hit SDCC since Shane Black's 2018 reboot. (Prey, which premiered at SDCC 2022, sadly never got a theatrical release.) Like with Tron, Predator: Badlands hasn't had much marketing since its initial trailer and poster. The Hall H panel will hopefully feature a new trailer for the film, which centers on Dak (Dimitrius Schuster-Koloamatangi), a young Yautja outcast teaming with the android Thia (Elle Fanning) to get back in his clan's good graces by hunting a worthy enemy. Prey director Dan Trachtenberg is back behind the camera for this one, and unlike Prey and this year's Killers of Killers, you'll be able to see Badlands on the big screen. San Diego Comic-Con runs from July 24-27, and Predator: Badlands hits theaters on November 7. While we wait for more info about it, might as well rewatch Prey or Killer of Killers over on Hulu. Is this Brooklyn Beckham's most brutal swipe yet amid ongoing family feud?

Brooklyn Beckham made it clear where his loyalties lie this week with a gesture his family are most likely to regard as the most brutal yet. The eldest son of David and Victoria Beckham shared a public post on his Instagram Stories along with his wife, Nicola Peltz-Beckham (30), wishing his father-in-law, American billionaire Nelson Peltz, a happy 83rd birthday. 'Happy Birthday Nelson x we love you ❤️,' the 26-year-old hot sauce entrepreneur wrote. It comes after he failed to publicly wish both his parents on their birthdays this year – in stark contrast to his gushing posts in the past. Brooklyn has reportedly all but cut off his famous family after escalating tension involving his American actress wife. 'Brooklyn told his family he wants no contact, and he's not responding to those that try to connect,' a source told Page Six. Rumours of a rift stretch back to their 2022 wedding when gossip swirled that Nicola and Victoria fought throughout the lead-up to the nuptials, with Nicola eventually shunning a VB gown for a Valentino one. Things clearly did not improve in the ensuing years but reached a breaking point when Brooklyn and Nicola did not attend Becks' 50th birthday celebrations in London in May, despite both being in the country at the time. Brooklyn also reportedly failed to congratulate his dad on his recent knighthood and said nothing on Father's Day despite David including him in his own effusive post about his four children. In fact, he seemed to double down on where his loyalties lie in a recent post, in which he said asking the blonde beauty to marry him was the 'best decision ever'. View this post on Instagram A post shared by @brooklynpeltzbeckham Indeed, there have been concerns, especially from his own family, that Brooklyn is 'infatuated' with Nicola. 'Brooklyn has a tendency to fall head over heels in love with women very fast,' a source close to the family says. 'He is absolutely besotted. They have barely spent a night apart since they have been together. It's like he can't imagine life without her – he will literally do anything she wants him to.' Sources say while she enjoys his devotion, it's become a key concern for his family, who believe he's become isolated even from friends. Brooklyn spends most of his evenings alone at home with his wife Source His brothers Romeo (22) and Cruz (20) have apparently taken to calling him 'The Hostage', a dig at how badly they think he's being controlled by Nicola. A recent post in which he can be seen on his motorbike with Nicola behind him, saw Brooklyn gushing, 'My whole world x I will love you forever x I always choose you baby x you're the most amazing person I know xx me and you forever baby.' View this post on Instagram A post shared by @brooklynpeltzbeckham Last month, the two snapped up their first permanent home – a $16 million (R288 million) mansion in an exclusive area of Beverly Hills that counts Jennifer Aniston and Jennifer Lawrence as residents. However, insiders say Nicola's billionaire father is probably the one who footed the bill for the jaw-dropping six-bedroom, seven-bathroom luxury pad. Show Comments ()
