Carter Co. Car Club Cruise-ins moved to Elizabethton High School parking lot
The Broad Street Bridge has been closed since Hurricane Helene due to structural damage sustained from the storm. The Tennessee Department of Transportation (TDOT) originally said the bridge was slated to be back open in late May. That has now been pushed back to early July.
A lot of traffic is now rerouted through downtown Elizabethton because of that closure.
In the past, the cruise-ins have caused tension between downtown business owners and the car club.
Some said it helped their business on Saturday evenings, while others said it hurt their sales instead.
David Williams, a manager at Dino's Restaurant in downtown Elizabethton, said he doesn't think the car show being moved will affect Dino's revenue much.
'We would stay full pretty much from the time it started till the time we closed,' Williams said. 'But as far as the car show actually affecting our bottom line for it not being here, that will be negligible just because of the fact that I had to have so much extra help and had to prep so much extra food that it's kind of a wash in the end.'
Prepping that much food wasn't always a win for Dino's on Saturday evenings.
'Then there are other times when the weather would have an effect, like it would be nice all day and we prepare all this food and then it would start raining about 4:30 [p.m.], and then the car show would get canceled. And then, unfortunately, at the end of the night, I'd have a bunch of food to throw out.'
Williams believes his customers generally didn't have a problem with the weekly car cruise-ins. However, he said it might've kept some away.
'I think some of our regular customers just avoided downtown on car show nights just because it was so hectic. So, without the car show, more of our regular customers will probably come in on Saturdays. '
'I never heard any complaints. Some just thought maybe having it every week for five, six months was maybe overkill. They would sometimes say, 'why don't they just have it twice a month or once a month?' Because they'd like to come down here more often on Saturday, but they just don't like fighting all the traffic and everything like that on Saturday nights when the car show's going on.'
Whitney Johnson, owner of The Wicked Whit, said during the cruise-ins, she would stay open later. She also said she would get more foot traffic and make more sales during that time.
News Channel 11 visited other businesses along East Elk Avenue about the change. They didn't want to speak on-camera, but said the change of pace is needed.
'I've not talked to anyone specifically, but I just heard rumblings that some of them love the car show, they love the atmosphere of it,' Williams said. 'And then others thought that they were actually losing business because of the parking situation and things like that.'
Williams said the cruise-ins also helped bring in a lot of people from out of town.
'Some people came as far away as Virginia and North Carolina to come to the car show. So it was great having tourists in town. So I kind of wish it was still going on. But at the same time, as far as me personally, our business, it's not going to have a big effect on us.'
The Carter County Car Club will have its first cruise-in of the year on May 31 in the EHS parking lot from 5 to 9 p.m. It will continue there every Saturday night until July.
Jim Bass, President of the Carter County Car Club, said he hopes to move the cruise-ins back downtown after the Broad Street Bridge reopens.
He will make a request to the Elizabethton City Council for the move.
News Channel 11 will have an interview with members of the Carter County Car Club before their first cruise-in of the year.

Race on for Bristol Motor Speedway to prepare for NASCAR after hosting the MLB Speedway Classic
BRISTOL, Tenn. -- The instant the Atlanta Braves and Cincinnati Braves cleared the baseball diamond inside the infield at Bristol Motor Speedway, a new clock started. 'The Last Great Colosseum' has to switch from hosting the MLB Speedway Classic and be ready for NASCAR's return to the historic racetrack hosting a playoff chase race Sept. 13. 'As soon as the last pitch is thrown, the last hit's hit, teams do their thing, postgame's taken care of, pads will start coming off the wall, and they'll work through the night to basically start disassembling so we can reassemble for the NASCAR race,' said Steve Swift, Speedway Motorsports' senior vice president of operations. Major League Baseball used BaAM to create everything from clubhouses for the Atlanta Braves and Cincinnati Reds complete with showers, strength and conditioning rooms, coach and trainers' offices and batting cages. Grandstands down both base lines with broadcast booths. Pit walls taken down to keep the Reds and Braves from crashing into them have to be rebuilt. Swift said pouring concrete walls does take time and then more time to cure properly. Additives can help concrete cure faster, but that's just one of the reconstruction issues causing obstacles. Swift said Bristol has had great partners planning for all the details of making this happen. Now it's time for Bristol Motor Speedway to go from hosting the first MLB regular-season game in the state of Tennessee and setting a record with a paid attendance of 91,032 back to its racing roots. 'It is difficult, but it's things that we like,' Swift said. "It gives us a challenge and we like challenges.' The transformation to a baseball diamond in the infield required 17,500 tons of gravel to level the infield, then 340 tons of Pennsylvania clay for the playing surface. Braves first baseman Matt Olson said Saturday that he couldn't believe Bristol was transformed all for one game. Well, everything that can be recycled will be used somewhere after the baseball diamond is removed. Some of the gravel will be used in Bristol Motor Speedway's parking lots. Swift said they have found groups to help use some of the materials to help people still recovering from the damages left by Hurricane Helene. That includes 2x4s and plywood used for the grandstands. 'A lot of stuff is going to go to good use as far as the rebuild portion," Swift said. "We just need to get it out of the way so we can put back asphalt and concrete.' This new renovation schedule has a couple of days built in for protection. The target date for being finished is Sept. 7. 'There may still be some paint drying whenever they roll in with the Goodyear haulers, but we'll definitely shoot for that (Sept. 7) day," Swift said. "And at the latest, we're looking at Tuesday.' Bristol hosted a college football game in 2016 that drew 156,990. Now the NHL might be in Bristol's future after Sportico reported Friday that league officials would be checking out how the racetrack handled Major League Baseball. When asked about possibly hosting an outdoor hockey game, Swift only said a hockey rink would be similar to a football field and that Speedway Motorsports has big dreams for what is possible at places like Bristol. 'We've shown with football and now baseball being here, that things can take place and we can do the the things that nobody would even think about,' Swift said.

2025 F1 Power Rankings: Hungarian Grand Prix Update
The F1 schedule moves to Hungary after the intense Belgian Grand Prix. The usual mix of sunshine and heavy rain at Spa-Francorchamps produced significant changes in our power rankings during the weekend. From a surprise middle field surge to top contenders losing ground, the rain-delayed race produced some movement in our rankings ahead of this weekend's Hungarian Grand Prix in Budapest. Here's the rundown as we prepare for the race ahead of a three-week break. 1. Oscar Piastri | McLaren The victory at Spa established Oscar Piastri as the clear driver's championship frontrunner, winning his sixth race of the season and expanding his lead over Lando Norris to 16 points. The start of Sunday brought immediate success as he seized the first-place position from Norris during the initial lap. We were impressed by his long lead expansion to 9.1 seconds as he maintained high lap times on the medium Pirelli tires. Piastri's dominant performance at Belgium followed his excellent P2 finish at Silverstone before a penalty was given to him for erratic driving, which left him fuming and motivated. 2. His car maintained its third position in both pit stops and behind the McLaren drivers while keeping Max Verstappen at bay despite using intermediate tires that were completely decayed. Ferrari's new suspension package delivered significant improvements to Scuderia's performance as Leclerc continues to succeed despite car challenges all season. 4. Alex Albon | Williams After achieving P8 at Silverstone, Alex Albon proved his driving skills by outperforming his teammate, Carlos Sainz, at Spa. The Williams driver showed exceptional speed during the qualifying session, which enabled him to earn a fifth position. The car maintained sixth place throughout the race by outperforming Lewis Hamilton's faster Ferrari because of its superior straightline performance. This outstanding performance solidifies his position as a future leading driver and it will be fun to see what he can do the rest of the season. 5. Max Verstappen | Red Bull During the Belgian Grand Prix weekend at Spa, Max Verstappen experienced mixed results following his poor British Grand Prix performance, where his Red Bull setup issues led to a P5 finish. Piastri lost the lead to him during the Sprint, but he maintained his position at P2 on the grid. During the race at Spa, he attempted to improve his position but ended up with a P4 finish because he could not overtake Leclerc's Ferrari. Lewis Hamilton | Ferrari During the Belgian Grand Prix weekend, Lewis Hamilton encountered some nightmares by spinning out twice during Q1 sessions and violating track limits multiple times. The Ferrari driver achieved a remarkable P7 position after starting from the pit lane. The seven-time champions demonstrated exceptional racing skills and strategic understanding by switching to slick tires, but Hamilton failed to reach the podium again. Josh Williams on departure from Kaulig Racing: Ive got more drive than ever
Kaulig Racing announced on Wednesday it was parting ways with driver Josh Williams after more than a year and a half together. Both sides felt it was for the best. After a 22nd-place finish at Indianapolis Motor Speedway, discussions began internally about the immediate future of the No. 11 car. Williams is 19th in the regular-season championship standings and needed a Hail Mary to make the NASCAR Xfinity Series playoffs, so there was no sense in delaying the inevitable. 'We had our differences a little bit. I don't think they were happy, and I wasn't happy,' Williams told 'It seemed like it was the best thing to do for both of us that we can all move forward and work towards the future a little bit faster. It worked out for both of us.' MORE: | Chris Rice, team president for Kaulig Racing, agreed with Williams. The relationship just wasn't working out for either party. 'Sometimes, chemistry just doesn't work in marriages, life, anything' Rice told on Thursday morning. 'When you look at our Xfinity program, there's a lot of potential there but we haven't been putting it to work. Those decisions are tough. When you think about our M.O., we're all about having fun and trying to win trophies. At the end of the day, it's not about that — it's about giving people opportunities to showcase their talent and making sure our stuff is up to par for everybody else.' Williams earned six top-10 finishes in 54 starts in Kaulig's flagship No. 11 Chevrolet, with a best effort of sixth in May at Charlotte Motor Speedway. Williams led 14 laps total in those starts. Kaulig Racing is winless through 21 races in 2025, with Rice considering the season unacceptable. That is on the heels of a 2024 season where Shane van Gisbergen dominated three road-course races in Kaulig equipment and AJ Allmendinger ultimately made the Championship 4 by scoring an upset victory at Las Vegas Motor Speedway in the Round of 8. 'We all want to win, but we want to be in contention to win and have a better opportunity to win and run top 10, run top five and we haven't even come close to that,' Rice added. 'We've got to figure that out. I think over the next couple of weeks before we get into the playoffs, we can judge our Xfinity program and see what needs to be changed and what we need to do for 2026.' Rookie Christian Eckes is the only Kaulig driver to score a top-five finish in 2025, earning three so far this year. He leads Kaulig with eight top-10 finishes, while fellow rookie Daniel Dye has seven top 10s. Williams wouldn't go as far as saying he didn't get a fair shot with Kaulig, but he said, 'it wasn't an ideal situation.' 'The past few years, as a whole organization, the performance wasn't as good as it was a few years before I even got there,' Williams said. 'Teams go through cycles. A lot of times, teams are really good and then they fade off a little bit and go back to being good. We were in that low part. I don't think it's anybody's fault; it's just the position that we were in.' Since the news dropped on Wednesday, Williams' phone hasn't stopped buzzing. Countless people within the racing industry reached out, making the process easier to reconcile. Rice said the same with the No. 11 car being a key opening leading into the offseason. Currently, he's unsure if Kaulig will operate two or three full-time Xfinity cars come 2026. 'I've had numerous Xfinity teams, numerous truck teams reach out to me,' Williams said. 'A lot of team owners, other drivers, people very high up in NASCAR, Hall of Fame drivers — I've had a lot of people reach out to me today and they are all on my side and everyone is behind me.' With a host of people checking in on Williams, he feels satisfied despite the circumstances. Every colleague working directly on the No. 11 Chevrolet reached out to him, aside from crew chief Eddie Pardue, Williams added. 'It goes to show you what type of person that I am,' he said. 'I can't walk down pit road without being late to the car because I've got to stop and talk to 100 people on the way. Everyone respects me and knows who I am as a person and how I treat people. 'I never burn a bridge because you don't know what the future holds. Motorsports is the smallest community in the world. Everything is a circle, no pun intended. We're all in this small circle and you never know when you're going to need that person one day. I might need Kaulig Racing one day and they might need me one day. You've got to keep those doors open.' Rice appreciated the opportunity of getting to work with Williams and alluded to being thankful for the partnership they had. Williams isn't done racing in 2025. Highlighted by primary partner Alloy Employer Services, Williams has a loyal sponsorship following that is committed to four more races this season. He couldn't confirm yet which races he will participate in or with which team. 'I have the people who are important to further my career on my side and that means a lot,' Williams said. Nailing down 2026 plans is top of mind for Williams. Separating from one of the series' mainstays didn't hurt too much, Williams said, because 'I know where my future is going.' 'It's still upsetting because I'm a racer; I want to go race,' he said. 'I have a plan for the future, so I feel like that makes it easier. I feel like I've got more drive than ever.'
