Construction of new houses for Shanthipuram Colony residents begins
Kochi: Reconstruction of houses has begun for residents in the area known as Shanthipuram Colony, located in 44th division of Kochi corporation in Karanakodam. Corporation has designed the project to construct new houses for 197 families in the colony using Life Mission and CSR funds. The existing houses are very old and lack proper security. "Providing them with safe and secure homes has been one of the long-term goals of the municipality and was announced in the budget. Under the leadership of Azadi Group's Architecture Engineering College, a plan has been prepared to construct apartment complexes in blocks of eight homes each, across three cents," mayor M Anilkumar said. "The expected construction cost for one house is Rs 10 lakh. However, the maximum amount the corporation can provide per family under LIFE scheme is Rs 4 lakh. We are unable to use any other funds for this purpose. The challenge before the corporation was to find the remaining Rs 6 lakh per house. Assurances have been received for CSR funds of Rs 1 crore from BPCL Kochi Refinery and Rs 50 lakh from Sobha Group. Phase I construction activities will commence soon," Anilkumar added. "Division councillor George Nanat also took the initiative to ensure the project becomes a reality," he said.

Goa schools' Tithi Bhojan serves 1L meals supplemented by community members
Panaji: Schools in Goa have been implementing the concept of 'Tithi Bhojan', recommended by Centre as part of the midday meal scheme, to encourage community participation. As part of Tithi Bhojan, members of the community provide children of a neighbourhood school with either an additional food item to their midday meal or a full meal on special occasions, such as festivals. The concept was implemented from the last academic year, and over 1 lakh meals were provided to 1,021 schools by community members, official data shows. Tithi Bhojan was introduced to involve community members in the neighbourhood school system. It also helps supplement the regular midday meal offered to children and makes the menu diverse and interesting. While reviewing the midday meal scheme implementation in Goa, the project approval board (PAB) of Centre noted that although the move by Goa schools to implement Tithi Bhojan is appreciable, there is still a huge potential for involving the community in the scheme. 'Setting up school nutrition gardens and enhanced community participation through Tithi Bhojan will go a long way in ensuring the enrichment of meals under the PM Poshan scheme,' the PAB told Goa officials during the review held in April. The PAB has also recommended that to further improve community involvement in the midday meal scheme, the state should 'take necessary steps to create a group of parents, preferably mothers, to taste the meals on a roster basis at the school level, on the lines of 'Maa Samooh' in Uttar Pradesh and 'Atithi Mata' in Rajasthan.' by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like I lost my wife, now my son is in danger, please help him! Donate For Health Donate Now Undo Tithi Bhojan is based on the traditional practice of providing food to a large number of people on landmark occasions, including anniversaries, birthdays, weddings, and days of national importance. It is not to be a substitute for the midday meal but to be a supplement. It is fully voluntary, and the people in the community contribute either a full meal or items in the form of sweets, namkeens, fruits, or sprouts as an addition to the midday meal. States have also been told to adopt a local name for the Tithi Bhojan. Eleven states have implemented the scheme with names, such as Sampriti Bhojan in Assam and Priti Bhojan in Punjab.

Ludhiana: Over 34,000 ‘silent' beneficiaries to be removed from free ration scheme
Around 34,798 silent ration card holders in Ludhiana district are likely to be excluded from accessing subsidised ration for the July to September quarter, if they failed to complete e-KYC verification by the stipulated deadline of July 15, officials familiar with the matter said. The initiative aims to eliminate bogus and ineligible beneficiaries, ensuring transparency in ration distribution. (HT Photo) According to officials, these beneficiaries have not availed their entitled free ration for over a year, putting them at risk of exclusion from the public distribution system under the Centre's 'One Nation One Ration Card' (ONORC) scheme. The initiative aims to eliminate bogus and ineligible beneficiaries, ensuring transparency in ration distribution. According to a notification issued by the Central government on March 17, 2023, all states and Union Territories were directed to launch a 100% e-KYC campaign at fair price shops under the National Food Security Act (NFSA). The move is aimed to create space for the creation of new ration cards after weeding out the bogus one. According to data, there are a total 86,875 beneficiaries in Ludhiana district that fall under the 'silent' category, those who have not availed their ration in recent months. Among them, 34,798 individuals have remained inactive for over a year, while another 52,077 have not claimed their entitlement for a period ranging from six months to a year. With these figures, Ludhiana ranks highest in the state, accounting for a staggering 23% of Punjab's 3.72 lakh silent ration card holders. A senior official from the district food and civil supplies department said that the cases of these inactive card holders have been under scrutiny as part of an ongoing verification drive. 'Many of them are suspected to have obtained ration cards for the sole purpose of availing other welfare benefits such as Ayushman cards, without ever collecting subsidised foodgrains. In some cases, beneficiaries have relocated and no longer reside in the district,' the official added. Meanwhile, to prevent wrongful exclusion, the department has initiated efforts to reach out to such beneficiaries, urging them to complete their e-KYC before July 15. If they fail to do so, then it will result in their ration cards being frozen, and they will be barred from receiving the quarterly wheat allocation which is 15 kg per person, officials said. When contacted, Sartaaj Singh Cheema, district food supplies controller (Ludhiana West), confirmed the development. 'Beneficiaries who have not availed their free ration for more than a year are likely to be excluded from subsidised wheat allocation for the July to September quarter. However, no such action will be taken against those whose inactivity ranges between six months to a year,' he said.
