Lewis Hamilton hails ‘world class' Ferrari performance

SPIELBERG, Austria - Lewis Hamilton hailed a 'world class' performance by Ferrari in Austrian Grand Prix qualifying on June 28, after Charles Leclerc took second place on the starting grid and he followed up in fourth.
The session equalled Ferrari's best of the season in Monaco, even if Leclerc was still more than half a second slower than McLaren's pole-sitter Lando Norris. McLaren's championship leader Oscar Piastri will start third.
'It's a fantastic result. The team have worked really hard back at the factory to bring us a new floor this weekend,' seven-times world champion Hamilton, who joined Ferrari this season from Mercedes, told Sky Sports television.
'My last lap wasn't perfect. I think if I'd finished it, I would have been second, so there are lots of positives to take out from that session.
'Also, I think it's been the best day operationally, particularly through qualifying. How the team operated. Just timings, the information we're getting in terms of traffic and positioning on track, I think was really the best. It was proper world class.'
Ferrari have yet to win a grand prix this season, although Hamilton won a sprint race in China in March, and the pressure has been mounting on team boss Fred Vasseur as their hopes of a first title since 2008 recede.
Hamilton has yet to finish higher than fourth in a regular grand prix for Ferrari and has now gone 12 races without a podium.
The team, runners-up in 2024, are now third overall and behind McLaren and Mercedes.
'Ultimately, we continue to pull together and protect each other and block out all the noise, and just keep our heads down,' said Hamilton.
'It's an incredible team. I'm working with Fred, we're working to put all the pieces of the puzzle in the right place, but step by step. It can't be done in one go.
'We've just got to keep working on it but I'm really happy with the progress we are making.' REUTERS

Enforcement officers will conduct checks at terminals and highways and review closed-circuit television footage inside buses to make sure that both drivers and passengers are following the new rule. In his remarks to local reporters after attending the Road Transport Department's Special Assembly on June 29, Mr Aedy Fadly emphasised there would be 'no compromise on violations moving forward'. 'We are currently reviewing and conducting engagement sessions with the industry to allow bus operators time to install seat belts for passenger seats,' said Mr Aedy Fadly, as quoted by The Star. The change follows calls for stricter safety regulations after a fatal bus accident on June 9. A bus carrying 42 passengers veered off the East-West Highway near Gerik in Perak , killing 15 Universiti Pendidikan Sultan Idris students. Thirteen died at the scene, and two others died later in hospital. A total of 48 people were involved in the crash. Austrian GP follows Miami in extending F1 contract to 2041
SPIELBERG, Austria - The Austrian Grand Prix at the Red Bull Ring will stay on the calendar through 2041 after announcing on Sunday a contract extension that equals Miami as the longest in Formula One. The current deal, last extended two years ago, ran to 2030. The circuit in Spielberg is owned by the Austrian energy drinks company that owns Red Bull Racing, and has Dutch four times world champion Max Verstappen as their star driver, and Italy-based Racing Bulls. Miami agreed a 10-year extension to 2041 last month. Behind them, Bahrain has a deal to 2036, Melbourne to 2035, Saudi Arabia and Qatar to at least 2032. "Austria has long been an incredibly special race for Formula One so it's fantastic we have secured the long-term future of a Grand Prix so deeply rooted in the sport's history," said Formula One chief executive Stefano Domenicali. Verstappen has won a record five times in Spielberg, a 4.3km circuit known for its picturesque backdrop and undulating layout. The late Red Bull founder Dietrich Mateschitz, whose son Mark is now at the helm, invested heavily in renovating the circuit. "I am delighted that Formula One will remain at the Red Bull Ring for many years to come. I am proud to continue my father's legacy," he said.
