Malaysian pharmaceuticals, semiconductors exempt from US tariffs, minister says

Business Times3 days ago
[KUALA LUMPUR] Malaysian pharmaceutical products and semiconductors will be exempt from US tariffs, the country's trade minister Tengku Zafrul Aziz said on Friday (Aug 1).
'At this time, exports of semiconductor and pharmaceutical (products) remain at 0 per cent (tariff rate),' he said at a press briefing after the US imposed a tariff of 19 per cent on Malaysia's exports.
He said the levy on Malaysian goods would be effective from Aug 8.
Tengku Zafrul also said that there had been no agreement with the US or other countries on the exclusive supply of rare earths.
'In fact, no such request has been made by the US,' he said.
Gaining access to rare earth metals has been a crucial part of US trade negotiations, with rival China currently in control of 90 per cent of global processing capacity. Critical minerals were also under discussion during US negotiations with Indonesia.
Tengku Zafrul said Malaysia and the US would release a joint statement on tariffs at the weekend.
The trade ministry said in a statement earlier on Friday that the tariff outcome came after sustained engagement by both countries and did not cross any of Malaysia's 'red lines' or compromise its sovereign rights. REUTERS

REUTERS/Piroschka van de Wouw/File Photo AMSTERDAM - The Netherlands will be the first contributor to NATO's new "Priority Ukraine Requirements List" (PURL) financing mechanism for Ukraine weapons with a 500 million euros ($578 million) payment, the Dutch defence minister said on Monday. "Ukraine needs more air defence and ammunition now. As the first NATO ally, the Netherlands will deliver a €500 million package of US weapon systems (including Patriot parts and missiles)," Dutch Defense Minister Ruben Brekelmans said in a statement on X. "This helps Ukraine to defend itself and the rest of Europe against Russian aggression," he added. In a statement posted on the Dutch defence ministry website, the ministry said that other countries have also pledged financing under the new mechanism. The defence ministry said that under the new scheme, Ukraine can draw on US military equipment stocks if these are funded by NATO allies. The United States is releasing military aid in packages worth approximately $500 million, it said, adding that the packages consist of air defence equipment, ammunition and other essential supplies tailored to Ukraine's needs. U.S. President Donald Trump said last month the U.S. would supply weapons to Ukraine, paid for by European allies, but did not provide details on how this would work. Reuters reported on Friday that NATO countries, Ukraine, and the U.S. were developing a new Ukraine weapons financing mechanism. REUTERS

Hitachi mulling over sale of Japanese white goods business, Nikkei reports

Japanese conglomerate Hitachi is considering selling its domestic home appliance business as part of a continued effort to prioritize the group's social infrastructure and digital sectors, the Nikkei newspaper has reported. The deal could be worth around 100 billion yen ($679.49 million) or more, the report said. Hitachi has reached out to multiple companies to buy its white goods business, with South Korea's Samsung Electronics being one of its potential suitors, Nikkei said. However, the report added that Hitachi is keeping the option of retaining the business open as well due to its potential of contributing to the company's brand recognition among consumers. Hitachi and Samsung Electronics did not immediately respond to Reuters' request for a comment. ($1 = 147.1700 yen)

Amazon overhauls Wondery podcast studio, cuts 110 jobs

is restructuring the Wondery podcast studio by shifting its award-winning narrative podcasts such as "Business Wars" to Audible and consolidating creator-led shows into a new unit, according to a memo seen by Reuters. About 110 employees will be laid off as part of the process, while many Wondery employees will transition to other parts of Amazon, the company said in an emailed statement on Monday. Wondery CEO Jen Sargent will depart the company following a transition period, the memo said. Intense competition in the expensive podcast industry as well as a growing focus on creator-led video content have prompted audio streaming companies including Spotify to diversify their podcasts as they look to lower costs and attract more users to their platforms. "As video podcasting has grown in popularity, we have learned that creator-led, video-integrated shows have different audience needs and require distinct discovery, growth and monetization strategies compared to audio-first, narrative series," Steve Boom, vice president of audio, Twitch and games at Amazon, wrote in the memo. Wondery was acquired by Amazon in 2021 and has seen podcast revenue quadruple since then as the studio expanded its slate to include video podcasts and creator-driven series, according to the memo. Under the new structure, Wondery's narrative podcast studio - home to shows such as "Dr. Death" and "American Scandal" - along with the Wondery+ subscription service, will move to Audible, the e-commerce giant's audio platform. Its creator-focused podcast team that produces shows including "Mind the Game", "New Heights", and "Armchair Expert" will join a new Creator Services group within Amazon's Talent Services division. This new team will continue to operate the creator-focused podcast studio under the Wondery brand. "By making these changes, we can better support creators in monetizing their content across multiple channels," Amazon said.
