Govt eyes sops for rare earth magnets to reduce dependence on China

Time of India24-06-2025
NEW DELHI: Govt is working on an incentive scheme for rare earth magnets and is likely to subsidise processing units as it seeks to develop a domestic base to reduce its dependence on China.
A decision on rolling out the scheme will be taken in 15-20 days, heavy industries and steel minister
H D Kumaraswamy
said on Tuesday.
Explaining the rationale, an official said, "There is hardly a 5% difference in prices of rare earth oxides and rare earth magnets... China wants to maintain its monopoly by keeping the price of magnets very low." According to official estimates, public sector undertaking IREL (India) can supply enough rare earths to make 1,500 tonnes of magnets.
"Converting these rare earths to magnets will take two years," the official said.
Consultations with stakeholders are underway to determine the quantum of subsidy to be offered under the scheme. "One Hyderabad-based company... they are showing interest. They have promised that they will deliver 500 tonnes by this year-end (Dec). We will have discussions with the mines minister," Kumaraswamy said.
China's recent restrictions on exports have caused widespread disruption, particularly for auto players. While govt and industry are seeking alternative sources of procurement, officials said 30 auto companies sought authorisation from the Directorate General of Foreign Trade to import rare earth magnets from China a fortnight ago, so that production is not impacted.

France fines one of Amazon's biggest Chinese retail competitors for misleading customers about discounts

Note: AI image France's antitrust agency has announced that it has fined fast-fashion giant Shein 40 million euros ($47.17 million) for alleged deceptive business practices, specifically concerning misleading discounts . The fine comes after a nearly year-long investigation into the China-founded retailer, which is one of Amazon's biggest competitors in the US. The agency, responsible for both consumer protection and competition, stated that Infinite Style E-Commerce Co Ltd (ISEL), the entity managing sales for the Shein brand, misled customers about the authenticity of discounts, as per news agency Reuters. What the rules say and findings of the French agency Under French regulations, a discount's reference price must be the lowest price offered by the retailer in the 30 days prior to the promotion. The investigation found that Shein failed to adhere to this rule, sometimes even increasing prices before applying a supposed discount, the report said. The probe, which analysed thousands of products on Shein's French website between October 1, 2022, and August 31, 2023, revealed significant discrepancies. It found that 57% of advertised deals did not, in fact, offer a lower price, 19% had less of a discount than advertised, and a surprising 11% were actually price increases. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like One of the Most Successful Investors of All Time, Warren Buffett, Recommends: 5 Books for Turning... The company claims ISEL implemented corrective actions within the subsequent two months, asserting that "all identified issues were addressed more than a year ago" and that ISEL is committed to complying with French regulations. Microsoft to cut about 4% of jobs amid hefty AI bets

Microsoft will lay off nearly 4% of its workforce, the company said on Wednesday, in the latest job cuts as the tech giant looks to rein in costs amid hefty investments in artificial intelligence infrastructure. The company, which had about 228,000 employees worldwide as of June 2024, had announced layoffs in May, affecting around 6,000 workers. It was planning to cut thousands of jobs, particularly in sales, Bloomberg News reported last month. The Windows maker had pledged $80 billion in capital spending for its fiscal year 2025. However, the soaring cost of scaling its AI infrastructure has weighed on its margins, with its June quarter cloud margin expected to shrink from last year. Microsoft said on Wednesday it planned to reduce organizational layers with fewer managers and streamline its products, procedures and roles. The Seattle Times first reported on the layoffs earlier on Wednesday. Separately, Bloomberg News reported Microsoft's Barcelona-based King division, which makes the Candy Crush video game, is cutting 10% of its staff, or about 200 jobs. Big Tech peers, which are investing heavily in artificial intelligence, have also announced job cuts. Facebook parent Meta earlier this year said it would trim about 5% of its "lowest performers", while Alphabet's Google has also laid off hundreds of employees in the past year. Amazon has also cut jobs across its business segments, most recently in its books division. The company had earlier laid off employees in its devices and services unit, and communications staff.
