Iran enacts law suspending cooperation with UN nuclear watchdog
Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian put into effect on Wednesday a law passed by parliament last week to suspend cooperation with the UN nuclear watchdog, the IAEA, Iranian state media reported.
Iran has threatened to halt cooperation with the IAEA, accusing it of siding with Western countries and providing a justification for Israel's air strikes, which began a day after the IAEA board voted to declare Iran in violation of obligations under the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty.
The law stipulates that any future inspection of Iran's nuclear sites by the International Atomic Energy Agency needs approval by Tehran's Supreme National Security Council.
"We are aware of these reports. The IAEA is awaiting further official information from Iran," the IAEA said in a statement.
Separately, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi said in an interview with CBS News that the US bombing of Iran's key Fordow nuclear site has "seriously and heavily damaged" the facility. — Reuters

Marcos, Canada PM discuss trade, Vancouver festival attack in phone call
President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. and Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney spoke by phone on Thursday to discuss several matters, including the car-ramming attack in Vancouver that killed several Filipinos in late April. A Reuters article said that the deceased were between the ages of 5 and 65. Canadian prosecutors later charged the suspect, Kai-Ji Adam Lo, with at least eight counts of second-degree murder. Both Marcos and Carney also ''agreed on the importance of a free and open Indo-Pacific and of the efforts of both Canada and the Philippines to uphold the rules-based international order and security in the region,'' the prime minister's office said. Putin tells Trump he won't back down from goals in Ukraine, Kremlin says
MOSCOW — Russian President Vladimir Putin told US President Donald Trump in a phone call on Thursday that Moscow wants a negotiated end to the Ukraine war but will not step back from its original goals, a Kremlin aide said. In a wide-ranging conversation that also covered Iran and the Middle East, Trump "again raised the issue of an early end to military action" in Ukraine, the aide, Yuri Ushakov, told reporters. "Vladimir Putin, for his part, noted that we continue to seek a political and negotiated solution to the conflict," Ushakov said. Putin briefed Trump on the implementation of agreements reached between Russia and Ukraine last month to exchange prisoners-of-war and dead soldiers, Ushakov said, and told him that Moscow was ready to continue negotiations with Kyiv. "Our president also said that Russia will achieve the goals it has set: that is, the elimination of the well-known root causes that led to the current state of affairs, to the current acute confrontation, and Russia will not back down from these goals," he added. There was nothing in the Kremlin readout to suggest that Putin had made any shift in Moscow's position during the conversation with Trump, who took office with a promise to end the war swiftly but has voiced frequent frustration with the lack of progress between the two sides. The phrase "root causes" is shorthand for the Kremlin's argument that it was compelled to go to war in Ukraine to prevent the country from joining NATO and being used by the Western alliance as a launch pad to attack Russia. Ukraine and its European allies say that is a specious pretext for what they call an imperial-style war, but Trump in previous public comments has shown sympathy with Moscow's refusal to accept NATO membership for Ukraine. Putin and Trump did not talk about the US decision to halt some shipments of critical weapons to Ukraine, Ushakov said. In a speech to the UN Human Rights Council, UN Special Rapporteur on the Occupied Palestinian Territories Francesca Albanese said: "The situation in the occupied Palestinian territory is apocalyptic." "Israel is responsible for one of the cruelest genocides in modern history," she added, in a speech that was met with a burst of applause from the Geneva council. Israel's diplomatic mission in Geneva did not immediately respond to a request for comment on Albanese's speech. Israel has rejected accusations of genocide in Gaza, citing its right to self-defense following the deadly October 7, 2023, Hamas attack. Its delegate was not present in the room in line with a new policy to disengage with the council which Israel says has an antisemitic bias.
