Kishane Thompson runs historic 100m time; Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce makes 9th world team
Kishane Thompson ran the world's fastest 100m in a decade, becoming the sixth-fastest man in history, while Tina Clayton won her first senior Jamaican title and Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce made her ninth and final World Championship team.
Thompson, edged by Noah Lyles for 2024 Olympic 100m gold by five thousandths of a second (9.784 to 9.789), ran 9.75 seconds at the Jamaican Championships in Kingston on Friday night. He had a .8 meter/second tailwind.
It's the world's fastest time since 2015 when American Justin Gatlin ran 9.74, 9.75 and 9.75 in a two-month span.
Thompson improved his personal best by two hundredths to become the sixth-fastest man in history behind Usain Bolt (world record 9.58), Yohan Blake (9.69), Tyson Gay (9.69), Asafa Powell (9.72) and Gatlin (9.74).
Thompson, 23, is the third-youngest man to run 9.75 or faster after his fellow Jamaicans Bolt and Blake.
'I'm that confident; I don't think if I even broke the world record it would surprise me, honestly,' Thompson said, adding that he could have executed his race better. 'I'm just going to put that out there.'
Thompson goes into the World Championships in Tokyo in September looking to snap the U.S. streak at four consecutive men's 100m titles since Bolt won his third and final title in 2015.
Noah Lyles, the reigning Olympic and world champion, last raced April 19 and has since dealt with a minor ankle injury. Lyles earned a bye into worlds as a reigning world champion, so he does not have to be at full fitness until September.
Also Friday. Clayton ran personal bests in Friday's semifinals (10.93) and final (10.81) for her first senior Jamaican title. No Jamaican woman has ever run that fast before turning 21 years old.
'I didn't expect this time,' said Clayton, the world U20 champion in 2021 and 2022. 'Based on how I was going in training, I knew that I would PB, but not that fast.'
The fastest women in the world this year are American Melissa Jefferson-Wooden (10.73), the Olympic bronze medalist, and Julien Alfred (10.75) of Saint Lucia, the Olympic gold medalist.
Clayton was followed in Friday's final by world 200m champion Shericka Jackson (10.88) and then Fraser-Pryce (10.91) in what she said was her last race in Jamaica before retiring later this year.
Fraser-Pryce, a 38-year-old with a record seven combined Olympic and world 100m titles, is due to compete at a ninth world championships. Jamaica will have at least three 100m spots at worlds, plus she's automatically in the 4x100m relay pool.
'I'm grateful for that fighting spirit,' Fraser-Pryce said, noting that her first worlds were also in Japan — as a preliminary round relay runner in 2007.
Fraser-Pryce will move one shy of the record 10 worlds appearances for a sprinter shared by American Allyson Felix and Kim Collins of Saint Kitts and Nevis.
She can become the oldest woman to win a World Championships medal in any sprint event, including relays, and the oldest female or male sprinter to win an individual world medal.
The current oldest female sprint medalist is Chandra Sturrup of the Bahamas, who won 4x100m silver in 2009 at age 37. Jamaica's Merlene Ottey was a younger 37 when she won 200m bronze in 1997.
Fraser-Pryce's 10 career World Championships gold medals are third in history behind Felix (14) and Usain Bolt (11). Her 16 career World Championships medals of any color are second to Felix (20).
Fraser-Pryce originally planned to retire after the 2024 Olympic season.
But then at the Paris Games, she withdrew before the 100m semifinals. A reason for her withdrawal was not announced.
In January 2025, Fraser-Pryce said she would come back for one more season. In a social media post in April, she said she had unfinished business.
The U.S. team for the World Championships will largely be determined at the USA Track and Field Outdoor Championships from July 31-Aug. 3 in Eugene, Oregon.
Olympic 100m silver medalist Sha'Carri Richardson earned a bye onto the U.S. team as a reigning world champion from 2023.

(Rodrick Anderson / American Press) A s a daughter of Division I athletes, athleticism courses through Aubrey Portie's blood. There was added pressure for her to succeed that others didn't have. Still, she channeled their knowledge to hone her abilities to excel as a multi-sport athlete, become a state champion and this year's American Press Female Athlete of the Year. 'It's a tough area to be in sometimes because, if I'm not succeeding well, then they know like what I'm doing wrong or what I need to fix,' Portie said. 'It's just tough because they are so hard on me because they know how good I can be, but I really appreciate them. 'I'm glad that they know what they're talking about to help me grow and be better at the sport that I play.' The Sam Houston junior shortstop helped lead the Broncos to their first state championship since 2015. As a powerful 5-foot-10 outside hitter, Portie and the Broncos reached the volleyball semifinals for the first time since 2009. 'It was pretty awesome to do that in both,' Portie said. 'That was definitely a different experience for volleyball because we made it to state my sophomore year, but it was not really anything the same as this past year. 'It was just a great learning experience, and it was just something that I was really looking forward to and that we worked for all season.' Portie's mother, Sarah (Everingham) Portie, was a four-time all-Southland Conference softball infielder (1994, '95, '97, '98) and coached the Barbe High softball program for two decades. Her father, Jarrod Portie, was an all-district baseball and football player at Jennings High School and went on to pitch for McNeese State from 1998 to 2001. He helped lead Jennings to the Class 3A baseball semifinals in 1996 and 1997. 'My dad is my hitting coach,' Portie said. 'I do hit a lot on my own, but there are days that I ask them to hit with me. '(Mom) helps with my hitting, too. She has obviously played it a while and coached it, so she knows the little things. Her being the one who travels with me to all my tournaments, she gives me some pointers and helps me out through it all.' With a brother, Riggins, a year younger than her, Portie said she always had someone to compete against. When she was younger, she played on the same youth baseball team as her brother, and eventually moved to softball. In her second season as a starter on the high school level, Portie was part of one of the most feared lineups in the state. The Broncos combined for 57 home runs and scored 357 runs on their way to the Non-select Division I state championship and a 30-2 record. Portie accounted for 14 of those home runs while batting .519 with eight doubles, two triples, 48 RBIs, 55 runs and 12 stolen bases. She had a .628 on-base percentage with four strikeouts in 81 at-bats. She earned all-district first team, Class 5A all-state honorable mention and American Press All-Southwest Big School honors. 'I had a year underneath my belt,' Portie said. 'I knew what I was going into, so it wasn't anything really new to me.' In junior high, she added three sports, including volleyball. 'I just grew up in the world of softball because of my parents,' Portie said. 'My dad played baseball, so I just grew up around that sport. But volleyball was just a random thing. 'One day, going into middle school, I was like, 'I think I want to try out for volleyball.' I didn't even know how many people were on the court at a time or any of the rules, but I made the team and started playing volleyball since then.' On the volleyball court, Portie earned co-district MVP honors and played in the Louisiana Volleyball Coaches Association Top 100 Player Showcase for a second consecutive season. She was ninth in the state with 466 kills in addition to 80 blocks 68 aces, 505 digs and 59 assists for the 39-7 Broncos. 'I did a lot of extra work,' Portie said. 'I did a lot of jump training with Barry Painter, and I feel like that has helped me grow as an athlete. 'My freshman year, I was not 5-10. I was definitely more like 5-5, 5-8, so just growing a couple of extra inches and learning your body. I would just say that I was more aware and just an overall better athlete.'

Canada's Aaron Brown: Grand Slam Track brought platform, professionalism to sport
It was meant to be quite the finale in the City of Stars this weekend. Instead, the inaugural Grand Slam Track season came to a halt with the cancellation of its final leg in Los Angeles earlier in June. The league became a talking point and a source of excitement for track athletes signed to Grand Slam Track, especially those from North America. It provided an opportunity for athletes to compete against the best without having to travel overseas. Toronto sprinter Aaron Brown, who competed in the most recent event in Philadelphia, feels the league brought something greater to the sport for Canadians. 'For athletes in Canada or athletes in America, being able to just stay within the country or go to Jamaica somewhere on this similar time zone, you know, not having to go overseas it's a huge benefit,' he said. 'It allows us to have better performances too because you're not having a deal with such jet lag, ... you don't have to show up (to the meet) super early you can train a little bit longer and harder and be in your the comfort of your own home for a longer time.' Michael Johnson, the founder and commissioner of Grand Slam Track, said the league is looking ahead to 2026 and beyond. 'Sometimes we have to make moves that aren't comfortable, but what's most important is the future and sustainability of the league,' he said as part of a statement. Brown says the opportunity is there for fans in North America to get used to the faces of the sport's stars that will be at the 2028 L.A. Olympics. 'I think meets like the Grand Slam are finally going to get us to that point where we can take advantage of it,' he said. 'Especially heading into L.A. 2028, that's a huge opportunity for people to get used to who the stars are going to be in L.A., get an early look at them, and be able to follow them into their, into the journey to that meet. 'Which is huge because it adds a narrative and incentive for you to pay attention. And so I just think that if track and field wants to have a professional league, this is the best way for them to do it. And, you know, I'm invested in their success.' Seven-time Olympic medallist Andre De Grasse of Markham, Ont., is another one of Canada's stars to have competed in Grand Slam, in addition to 2023 800-metre world champion and 2024 Olympic silver medallist Marco Arop, who competed in both the 800 and 1,500 as a short-distance racer. Arop stood out among the Canadian cohort, winning the 800 races in the three Grand Slam events held. Although he didn't fare as well in the 1,500, Arop was among the top point-getters in the short distance group, finishing no lower than second and being first at the Philadelphia event. Competition aside, Brown said Grand Slam Track provided things that are not typically offered at other meets. Brown said locally-sourced snacks were provided, on top of a drip check done to shoot athletes and display their outfits. Collab posts to helped athletes push each other's audiences. He also said athletes got their own rooms for accomodations, were given per diems that were provided 'to go select the food ourselves,' and that the prize money was 'significantly more than any other meet that's available to the athletes.' 'I think at the very least, it gave us the blueprint of how a meet could be run and what's possible,' Brown said. 'Getting out of that myopic viewpoint that we have to follow the same model and do things that we've been doing for decades that has led to stagnation in the sport and not allow us to evolve and grow and adapt like all the other sports have. 'So, I think just showing that athletes can be at the forefront. We have stars in our sports, and the more support we get behind it, the bigger it's going to be.'
