Delhi University approves MA in Hindi journalism, course to begin in 2025-26
Celebrated annually on May 30, Hindi Journalism Day marks the publication of 'Udant Martand' in 1826 — the first Hindi-language newspaper in India — and highlights the significant role of journalism as the fourth pillar of democracy.
The newly-approved postgraduate course will be offered under the Department of Hindi and is part of the Faculty of Arts. It is designed in alignment with the university's Postgraduate Curriculum Framework.
However, for the course to be implemented, it must receive a final nod from the Academic Council.
The committee members confirmed the launch of the Hindi-medium course and revealed that an English-medium counterpart, to be offered under the Department of English, is expected to start in the following academic session, 2026-27.
The committee convened on Friday to discuss and approve the syllabi for several undergraduate and postgraduate courses. These included the seventh and eighth semesters of various BA programmes, such as education, Hindustani music (both programme and honours) and geography, all structured under the Undergraduate Curriculum Framework (UGCF).
The postgraduate syllabi in disciplines, including philosophy, economics, geography, sociology, political science and mathematics, were also reviewed during the session, with changes made in accordance with the new curriculum framework.
The committee had held meetings on May 2, 6 and 8 to deliberate on syllabus revisions, many of which were later approved by the academic and executive councils, despite instances of dissent.

Maharashtra language war: Is it with an eye on Mumbai municipal polls? Experts debate
The language controversy in Maharashtra has escalated, with Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) workers protesting and allegedly assaulting non-Marathi speakers in Mumbai suburbs. This comes ahead of crucial municipal elections, raising questions about whether this is a genuine fight for Marathi pride or a political strategy. The Thackeray cousins, Uddhav and Raj, have united on this issue, while the BJP denies accusations of imposing Hindi. The Congress and NCP have taken a cautious approach so far. Critics argue this may be more about control of the BMC's large budget than language issues. The controversy has sparked debates about cultural identity, language policy, and political opportunism in Maharashtra. The issue of Marathi language and identity has resurfaced in Maharashtra politics, with opposition parties uniting against a government order on Hindi language education. Shiv Sena UBT leader stated the party's commitment to promoting Marathi while respecting other languages. The NCP accused the government of failing to address public concerns and provide concrete solutions for Marathi language promotion. BJP faces criticism over comments by MP Nishikant Dubey. The debate has reignited discussions on Marathi pride ahead of BMC elections, with speculation about potential alliances between Uddhav and Raj Thackeray. Sena may revive Operation Tiger to counter possible reunion of Thackerays
Pune: Shiv Sena politicians are planning a fresh round of Operation Tiger to poach members of Sena (UBT) to counter the possible reunion between Thackeray cousins for the upcoming civic poll. UBT chief Uddhav Thackeray and MNS chief Raj Thackeray came together after almost 18 years to address a joint rally in Mumbai over the Marathi-Hindi language row on Saturday. During the rally, Uddhav hinted that the cousins would likely stay united politically. Although there has been no formal announcement from either party about an alliance for the civic poll, Mahayuti members have started to take action to counter a possible reunion. Sena members as also political observers feel the Thackeray reunion may affect deputy chief minister Eknath Shinde's party in Mumbai, Thane, Pune, Nashik and Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar. Therefore, they are approaching UBT members in these cities. The party had initiated a similar strategy after the assembly poll and named it Operation Tiger. "Over the last few months, several UBT politicians have joined Sena, since they see a bright future with us. Many former members of UBT want to be with the govt, despite talks regarding the Thackeray cousins coming together. We will induct some of them into our party soon," said the senior Sena member.

Need to see reasons for Thackerays' possible reunion, says state Congress chief Sapkal
Pune: While the Thackeray cousins — Shiv Sena (UBT) president Uddhav Thackeray and MNS chief Raj Thackeray — have signalled a possible reunion for the civic polls, MVA member Congress has decided to take a wait and watch approach on the matter. According to Congress politicians, they are keen to know if the reasons for their coming together are more on the family front or solely on the Marathi language row. The party will take a call on continuing in the alliance or inviting Raj Thackeray on board only after discussions with the top brass in Delhi, they said. State Congress president Harshwardhan Sapkal said as far as the INDIA and MVA are concerned, they contested the Lok Sabha and assembly elections together. "Now, the decision about the alliance for the civic body polls has been left to the district units. In the case of the Thackerays' reunion, we will have to see if they are coming together at the family level or only for the Marathi cause. Once we get clarity on it, we will speak to our central leadership and other alliance partners before taking the next step. " You Can Also Check: Pune AQI | Weather in Pune | Bank Holidays in Pune | Public Holidays in Pune Sapkal criticised BJP over the Hindi-Marathi controversy. "The issue shows the double standard of BJP and RSS. On the one hand, RSS says it supports regional languages, while BJP is pushing for Hindi. That is one example of how BJP and RSS are creating confusion in the minds of people to push their agenda," he said. After a gap of 18 years, the Thackeray cousins held a joint rally in Mumbai over the Hindi-Marathi row. Although Uddhav Thackeray hinted at continuing the reunion beyond the rally, there has been no clarity from both parties about their future plans. WIth the civic body polls approaching, there are speculations about Sena (UBT) and MNS joining hands.
