10,500 sarees, 1,250 kg silver, 28 kg gold…, she was the richest actress of the 70s, with a net worth of Rs 900 crore

Born on February 24, 1948, in Mandya, Karnataka, Jayalalithaa lost her father at a young age, forcing her mother, an actress herself, to shoulder the family's responsibilities. She studied at Chennai's Church Park School but was soon drawn into films, debuting in 1961 with the Tamil film Epistle. Her Bollywood entry came in 1968 with Izzat opposite Dharmendra, her only full-fledged Hindi role. The reigning queen of South cinema Over the next two decades, Jayalalithaa starred in more than 300 Tamil, Telugu, and Kannada films. Known for her graceful dance and commanding screen presence, she worked alongside icons like M.G. Ramachandran, Sivaji Ganesan, N.T. Rama Rao and Akkineni Nageswara Rao. At her peak in the 1970s, she was among the highest-paid actresses, commanding fees in lakhs per film. The wealth and the infamous raid By the late '70s, she was counted among India's richest actresses. In 1997, a dramatic income-tax raid at her Poes Garden residence revealed staggering possessions — 10,500 sarees, 750 pairs of shoes, 91 watches, 1,250 kg of silver, 28 kg of gold, multiple luxury cars, and other high-value items. Estimates pegged her wealth at over Rs 900 crore. From actress to six-time Chief Minister In 1980, Jayalalithaa retired from films and entered politics through M.G. Ramachandran's AIADMK. Rising quickly, she became a Rajya Sabha MP and later the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu, a post she held six times. Known as 'Amma' to her supporters, she launched several welfare schemes, solidifying her political stature despite controversies. Jayalalithaa passed away in 2016, leaving behind a legacy as one of India's most charismatic and polarising leaders — a woman who dominated both the silver screen and the political stage with equal force.

'Free speech will suffer': Musk's X locks horns with UK over online safety laws

REUTERS/Dado Ruvic/Illustration The social media platform X, owned by US billionaire Elon Musk, has publicly criticised the UK's newly implemented Online Safety Act, warning that its broad regulations could pose a risk to free speech. The company issued a stark statement: 'Free speech will suffer. The Act's laudable intentions are at risk of being overshadowed by the breadth of its regulatory reach. Without a more balanced, collaborative approach, free speech will suffer.' New provisions of Online Safety Act The criticism follows the rollout of new provisions under the Online Safety Act, which took effect recently. A key requirement mandates that websites, including social media and adult content platforms, verify the age of users to shield children from explicit or violent material. STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD While X has taken steps to comply, such as introducing age verification systems, it expressed concerns about the law's broader implications. The platform cautioned that the threat of hefty financial penalties could push companies to over-censor content, stating, 'Many are now concerned that a plan ostensibly intended to keep children safe is at risk of seriously infringing on the public's right to free expression.' UK govt stands strong by legislation The UK government has stood by the legislation, stressing that non-compliant companies could face fines of up to £18 million or 10 per cent of their global turnover—a penalty that could reach £200 million for X. The UK's media regulator, Ofcom, has already launched investigations into dozens of websites failing to implement required safeguards and has reached out to US-based companies, including X, to remind them of their legal obligations. X also took issue with provisions allowing police to monitor social media for content deemed anti-immigrant, arguing that this 'oversteps the intended mission' of protecting children. The platform's concerns align with remarks from Elon Musk, who previously labelled the Online Safety Act as a 'suppression of the people.' Musk has also thrown his support behind a public petition calling for the law's repeal, which has garnered over 450,000 signatures. In response, Ofcom defended the regulations, clarifying that they do not mandate restricting legal content for adults. A spokesperson stated, 'They must carefully consider how they protect users' rights to freedom of expression while keeping people safe.'

PM Modi Dedicates Op Sindoor's Success to Lord Mahadev, Slams Cong-SP for Defending Terrorists Prime Minister Narendra Modi has dedicated the success of Operation Sindoor, India's precision retaliation against Pakistan-based terror hubs, to Lord Mahadev, in a powerful declaration of justice and vengeance. Speaking in Varanasi, his first visit after the attack, Modi recalled the Pahalgam massacre, where 26 civilians, including women and children, were brutally killed by The Resistance Front, linked to Lashkar-e-Taiba. Modi said he had taken a vow to avenge the spilled "sindoor" of India's daughters, and Operation Sindoor, followed by Operation Mahadev, was that sacred retribution. Modi also launched a blistering attack on the Congress and Samajwadi Party, accusing them of sympathising with Pakistan and questioning the bravery of India's security forces. Addressing a public rally, PM Modi took a dig at Rahul Gandhi and Akhilesh Yadav by saying, 'Pakistan is crying, and so is Congress and SP. They are hurt by the death of terrorists in Operation Sindoor.'#operationsindoor, #mahadev, #modiinvaranasi, #terrorattack, #trf, #lashkaretaiba, #pahalgamattack, #indianarmy, #modispeech, #kashmirterror, #modivsterror, #retaliationstrike, #modiinuttarpradesh, #modiinpahalgam, #sindoorrevenge, #modiblessing, #kashmirsurgicalstrike, #pakistancries, #congressappeasement, #modivscongress, #rahulgandhi, #akhileshyadav, #samajwadiparty, #india, #breakingnews, #trending, #bharat, #toi, #toibharat, #indianews 5.0K views | 59 minutes ago
