Rohit Sharma recalls India's batting collapse in T20 World Cup 2024: Was panicking… wasn't comfortable

Indian Express3 days ago

India broke the ICC trophy drought in 2024 when they won the T20 World Cup after 13 years. However, the game was not smooth sailing against South Africa. Both teams going into the game were unbeaten and fought tooth and nail in Barbados. India did manage to lose three early wickets in the powerplay and was in a bit of a pickle.
'I was panicking. I wasn't comfortable. I thought we'd let them into the game. Of course, in the back of my mind, I always believed our lower middle order, although it hadn't batted much during the tournament, had made an impact whenever given the opportunity,' said Rohit Sharma, speaking to Jiostar.
'Not many people are talking about Axar's knock, but it was the game-changer. Scoring 47 off 31 at that stage was vital. And we needed one player to bat through the innings, Virat did that brilliantly,' added Rohit.
It would be a partnership between Axar and Virat Kohli that would steady the ship initially for India and help to put on a score of 176/7.
Kohli, going into the game, was in a lean patch; however, in the final, he pulled off a 59-ball 76 run innings. 'If you hit three boundaries in the first over, then you've started well. That's what every cricketer wants. The experience of playing for India for so many years helps. You can control your emotions, control your thoughts, and stay in the moment. I'm sure he was thinking the same: 'Today is the day I need to be focused.' Not worrying about what happened before. And he played a brilliant innings, a fantastic partnership with Axar,' said Rohit Sharma
In the chase, South Africa at one point did look like they would get there; however, Jasprit Bumrah's two overs changed the tide in the contest, and Suryakumar Yadav took a stunning catch of David Miller in the final to ensure India got over the line.

"Night To Remember Forever": Rajeev Shukla, Mohammed Kaif Recall India's T20 World Cup 2024 Win

The Board of Control of India (BCCI) vice-president Rajeev Shukla reminisced on Team India's ICC T20 World Cup win last year on this day, calling it a "night to remember forever". On this day last year, Team India ended their 11-year-long trophy drought as a match-winning half-century from Virat Kohli and a brilliant pace choke by Jasprit Bumrah, Arshdeep Singh, and Hardik Pandya helped them beat South Africa by seven runs at Barbados in the T20 WC final to capture their second marquee T20 title. Remembering that day, Shukla wrote on his X handle, "June 29, 2024, was a night to remember forever. After 11 long years, India finally won an ICC trophy, lifting the T20 World Cup with pride and passion. The wait, the emotions, the glory all came together in that magical moment. @BCCI." After the match, Virat and Rohit Sharma announced their retirements from the format. "Day to remember India's great tactics that won them the World T20 and our two greats who we miss. Rohit's plan to play three spinners and Virat's man of the match in final - great memories," Kaif posted. The coin spun in India's favour during the time of the toss, and Rohit decided to put South Africa in a position to chase. After India was reduced to 34/3, batting maestro Virat Kohli and Axar raised a priceless 72-run partnership before the latter was dismissed on 47(31). Virat continued to extend his stay at the crease and switched through gears after celebrating his half-century. With his enchanting strokeplay, he blew away the South African bowling unit and returned with 76(59). Shivam Dube's swift 27 from 16 deliveries propelled India to 176/7. In reply, Quinton de Kock (39) and Heinrich Klaasen (52) decimated India's hopes of winning the title. With the equation down to 26 off 24 deliveries, a spirited pace bowling performance came to India's rescue. Hardik Pandya, Jasprit Bumrah and Arshdeep Singh emerged as the prime architects of the Proteas' downfall. With 16 needed in the final over and David Miller on strike, Pandya began his over with a wide full toss that Miller dispatched down the ground through the aerial route. Suryakumar sprinted to his left from long-off and grabbed the ball. He lobbed it in the air as momentum took him past the boundary rope and then came back inside the field to complete a catch that determined the fate of the title. The troika chained South African batters and escaped with a narrow seven-run victory to end the ICC Trophy drought.

"Need To Keep Pushing And Keep Improving": Smriti Mandhana After Historic T20I Ton vs England

India's stand-in captain, Smriti Mandhana, is looking for more success after blazing her way to her first T20I century during the series opener against England in Nottingham. Mandhana, who served as the stand-in skipper in the absence of injured Harmanpreet Kaur, led from the front as India kicked off the series with a thumping 97-run victory. With her flamboyant batting skills on display, Mandhana hammered 112 from 62 deliveries to power India to a daunting 210/5 in the first innings. Despite her record-shattering display, Mandhana revealed that T20Is don't naturally come to her due to her preference for timing over power-hitting. After getting a taste of striking a high score and breaking records, the 28-year-old southpaw is now aiming to replicate high-scoring performances in the future. "It's a nice feeling because, of course, this format is something which, for me as a batter, I need to keep pushing and keep improving. It's not a very natural format for me because I like to time the ball, not a big hitter of the ball, and for the last six years, it's always a work in progress, and it's still a work in progress," she said as quoted from the ICC. "So, to actually get a hundred in this format, of course, getting it before in Test cricket and One Day cricket, which are more suited to my batting [was significant as well], but getting it in this format is pretty special because it's not one of my strengths. I mean, the improvement, and I'm trying to work a lot on my power hitting and to see that come through, which is a really nice feeling," she added. In the series opener, young Shafali Verma returned to the Indian setup for the first time after being dropped in late 2024. Her return didn't begin on a sparkling note as she struggled for rhythm and returned to the dressing room with a scratchy knock of 20(22). Despite an unimpressive outing, Mandhana exuded confidence in the youngster. "I've seen Shafali bat in the last seven-eight days, [she did] amazingly well in the nets. So I don't see a big knock is too far because of the way she's been hitting the ball. Sometimes, coming back into the Indian team and coming into the first match, of course, there are a different kind of nerves. I'm sure this match is going to take those nerves away for her," she said. After taking a 1-0 lead, India will look to extend it in the second contest, which is scheduled to take place on Tuesday at the Seat Unique Stadium in Bristol.

USA Cricket board faces ICC pressure amid looming suspension threat

The International Cricket Council (ICC) is the global governing body of cricket (Photo Credit: Reuters) BIRMINGHAM: The International Cricket Council (ICC) is preparing to take decisive action against USA Cricket (USAC) as the end of its 12-month governance notice period approaches next month. Sources familiar with the matter say the ICC is considering suspending the national governing body unless significant leadership changes occur before the ICC's Annual Conference in July. USAC was formally placed under notice in July 2024, when the ICC established a normalisation committee to oversee compliance and reforms. At the time, the ICC cited the board's lack of a 'fit for purpose' governance and administrative structure. Since then, little progress has been made, according to individuals with knowledge of recent discussions. Go Beyond The Boundary with our YouTube channel. SUBSCRIBE NOW! An ICC delegation visited Los Angeles earlier this month for meetings with the U.S. Olympic and Paralympic Committee (USOPC). Those discussions, which included members of the normalisation committee and senior USAC representatives, are understood to have reinforced concerns about ongoing dysfunction and internal disputes within USAC. One official with direct involvement described the situation as 'unsustainable,' noting that despite repeated warnings and external oversight, 'very little has changed.' 'The ICC's position is clear: effective governance is non-negotiable, especially ahead of cricket's return to the Olympics at LA 2028,' the official said. Poll How confident are you in the current USAC leadership? Very confident Somewhat confident Not confident at all During the visit, ICC representatives reportedly urged members of the current board, led by Chair Venu Pisike, to step down voluntarily. While some directors are said to be open to resigning, others remain resistant. A board member told that no formal decisions have been made and that the group is awaiting documentation from the ICC before determining next steps. ICC officials pushed back on that characterisation, stating the Los Angeles discussions were informal and not subject to official minutes. 'This is not a bureaucratic technicality,' said one person close to the talks. 'This is about whether the US cricket community is governed competently and transparently.' However, several resignations are expected in the coming weeks in an effort to preempt formal sanctions. Suspension by the ICC would effectively isolate USAC from global cricket structures, impacting its ability to receive funding, host international matches, or participate in development programs. The ICC has not made a public statement on the matter, but with the July deadline approaching, a resolution—voluntary or otherwise—appears imminent.
