Israel should have monopoly on nuclear weapons in region: Belgian defense minister

Al Arabiya25-06-2025
Belgium's defense minister said Wednesday that Israel must have a monopoly on nuclear weapons in the Middle East, adding that Iran is a threat to the West and should not be allowed to have nuclear weapons.
'I think that we need to do everything to ensure Iran cannot have a nuclear capacity. The monopoly of Israel on the nuclear perspective is absolutely necessary,' Belgian Defense Minister Theo Francken told Al Arabiya English on the sidelines of the NATO Summit in The Hague.
'Iran is a direct threat to the West, absolutely,' he added.
Following last weekend's unprecedented US bombing operation against three Iranian nuclear sites, including the notorious Fordow, conflicting reports have emerged over how much impact those strikes had.
Low-level intelligence assessments from the Pentagon's Defense Intelligence Agency (DIA) leaked to US media this week suggested that Iran may still have a majority of its nuclear capabilities intact.
A senior DIA official told Al Arabiya English on Wednesday that a probe had been launched into the leak, highlighting that it was a preliminary, low-confidence assessment, not a final conclusion.
'We have still not been able to review the actual physical sites themselves, which will give us the best indication,' a senior DIA official told Al Arabiya English.
Asked about the impact of the US strikes, the Belgian minister said the reports were not very convincing. 'When you drop those bombs on that site, I think that the probability is very high that it is destroyed. But I'm not there; I'm not an expert,' Franken said.

French Foreign Minister Denounces Spy Charges against Couple Imprisoned in Iran

France's foreign minister denounced spy charges reportedly being used to hold two French nationals in Iran for more than three years, saying the allegations are 'unjustified and unfounded." French Foreign Minister Jean-Noël Barrot on Thursday said France had not been formerly notified by Iranian authorities of the charges against French citizens Cécile Kohler and Jacques Paris, which reportedly include spying for Israel. If confirmed, France would consider the charges 'totally unjustified and unfounded,' Barrot said, calling for the couple's 'immediate, unconditional release.' According to The AP news, Kohler, 40, and her partner Paris, 72, were arrested in May 2022 and until last month were detained at Tehran's Evin Prison, known for holding dual nationals and Westerners who are used by Iran as bargaining chips in diplomatic negotiations. A French diplomat was able to meet the pair earlier this week as their families demanded proof they were alive following recent Israeli strikes on the prison. Kohler's sister, Noemie Kohler, said in an interview broadcast Thursday on BFM TV that the couple were told they had been charged with spying for Israel, conspiracy to overthrow the Iranian regime and 'corruption on Earth.' 'Our understanding ... is that they face death penalty,' she said. 'We're really extremely worried about their psychological state and the trauma of the bombings.' The visit by the French diplomat took place at a prison south of Tehran but, like some other prisoners, Kohler and Paris were transferred from Evin following the Israeli strikes and their location is unknown, Noemie Kohler said.

Danish police deploy to Israeli embassy in Copenhagen to examine a suspicious package

COPENHAGEN: Danish police said Thursday they have deployed officers to the Israeli embassy in the Nordic country's capital to examine a suspicious package. Copenhagen police wrote on X that 'we are present at the Israeli embassy, where we are investigating a shipment received.' They added that 'we currently have no further information.' Danish public broadcaster DR showed photos of several police and emergency vehicles near the embassy, including what they reported was a hazmat emergency response team vehicle. Police wrote on X that they had blocked roads near the embassy. Anders Frederiksen, duty chief at the Copenhagen Police, told Danish daily Ekstra Bladet that 'ordinary citizens in the area should not be worried.' Security officials in many European countries have increased surveillance and protection of Israeli and Jewish institutions after a 12-day war broke out between Israel and Iran in June. Last week, security officers arrested a man in the Danish city of Aarhus on suspicion of gathering information on Jewish locations and individuals in Germany for Iranian intelligence. Prosecutors said the man was tasked by an Iranian intelligence service early this year with gathering information on 'Jewish localities and specific Jewish individuals' in Berlin. They didn't elaborate. He spied on three properties in June, 'presumably in preparation of further intelligence activities in Germany, possibly including terrorist attacks on Jewish targets,' prosecutors said. German Justice Minister Stefanie Hubig said that 'if this suspicion is confirmed, we are dealing with an outrageous operation,' adding in a statement that 'the protection of Jewish life has the highest priority for the German government.' Germany has requested the extradition of the suspect.
