Flights suspended, airspace closed as out-of-control wildfire burns in Kelowna, B.C.
Officials at Kelowna International Airport have closed the airport's surrounding airspace as an active wildfire continues to burn in the region. On Sunday afternoon YLW posted an update to its website advising travellers that the BC Wildfire Service had initiated the closure, suspending all arrivals and departures, due to a blaze burning on a hillside in the east Kelowna neighbourhood of Ellison. 'We will continue to monitor the situation closely and provide updates as they become available,' the statement said. According to an update issued by the BC Wildfire Service shortly after 5 p.m. Sunday, the fire had expanded to cover two hectares and was regarded as being out of control. An out-of-control wildfire is regarded as being a blaze that is spreading, or it is anticipated to spread, beyond the current perimeter or control line. Residents who live close by are being advised to prepare for a possible evacuation as the fire, suspected to be human-caused, continues to burn north. According to a release by the Kelowna RCMP, officers are conducting 'tactical evacuations' of homes in the area of Rockrace Road, Upper Booth Road and Dead Pine Road. Mounties say the blaze is burning uphill toward Postill Lake, northeast of Kelowna, and is heading towards several other nearby lakes that have cabins and campsites. Police are advising the public in those areas above Ellison to leave as a precaution. 'Kelowna RCMP and emergency service partners cannot stress enough the importance of staying out of the area,' police said Sunday afternoon. 'Emergency services will not allow members of the general public into the evacuation zone. Please stay away for your safety and the safety of responders.' With files from the Canadian Press.

Wildfire burning near Kelowna airport prompts tactical evacuations
A wildfire burning just north of Kelowna is prompting tactical evacuations, with crews battling flames near the city's airport. The Ellison Fire Department, the Kelowna Fire Department and the BC Wildfire Service (BCWS) are all at the scene of the blaze, which started Sunday afternoon in the Ellison area, about nine kilometres northeast of central Kelowna. The BCWS said the blaze is about two hectares in size and is currently classified as out of control. According to Kelowna RCMP, the blaze is burning uphill toward Postill Lake and other nearby lakes with cabins and campsites. Officers are carrying out tactical evacuations in the Rockface Road, Upper Booth Road and Dead Pine Road areas. "Residents are being asked to prepare for a possible evacuation," the RCMP said in a statement. "We cannot stress enough the importance of staying out of the area. Emergency services will not allow members of the general public into the evacuation zone." The RCMP said access in the forested area is limited and they are encouraging anyone near the lakes to leave as a precaution. The fire is in the Ellison Fire Department's jurisdiction, said Cali Nessman, a fire information officer with the Kamloops Fire Centre. "BCWS is supporting with three initial attack crews, two response officers, two helicopters doing bucketing, four air tankers, and a bird dog aircraft," Nessman said. The Kelowna Fire Department is working to keep the fire from advancing toward nearby recreational areas. The fire is suspected to be human-caused, which the BCWS said could include both intentional and accidental ignition. The wildfire service said it's still too early to predict how the fire will behave, but further updates are expected as crews monitor the situation.

Cooler temperatures, rain reduce wildfire activity across Alberta
Rainfall and cooler temperatures have 'significantly' reduced fire activity across the province, says Alberta Wildfire. Derrick Forsyth, an information officer for the provincial agency, told CTV News Edmonton conditions over the last few days has resulted in fires being kept in check by weather and by work from fire crews, who have taken advantage of the conditions to contain blazes. 'There are a couple of small exceptions – the agricultural zone down south, and a couple of pockets in High Level and the Lac La Biche forest area where the danger is moderate – but we've seen a significant turnaround in terms of fire danger across the province,' Forsyth said on Sunday. Warmer temperatures starting Monday could change the outlook as could an expected increase in lightning activity this month as July is typically the most-active month for it, Forsythe said. 'This summer, there's potential for a lot more active fires to be there, but it'll be (based on) conditions,' he said. Key wildfires noted by Alberta Wildfire include the Red Earth East complex north of Slave Lake, the Sousa Creek wildfire complex west of High Level near Chateh and Rainbow Lake, and the Slims Creek wildfire north of Manning.
