DOE intensifies patrols and drone surveillance to combat haze in Malaysia
DOE director-general Datuk Wan Abdul Latiff Wan Jaffar stated that enforcement actions have been strict, with 58 notices issued, 27 court cases filed, and 59 compounds imposed on violators. 'We are intensifying daily patrols in high-risk areas while closely monitoring Air Pollutant Index (API) levels,' he said.
The National Open Burning Action Plan and National Haze Action Plan have been activated to coordinate government efforts in managing haze. Landowners are urged to monitor fire-prone zones such as landfills, forests, and plantations to prevent trespassing and illegal burning.
As of 3 pm today, API readings showed good air quality in five areas, moderate levels in 61, and unhealthy conditions in Kuching, Sarawak, and Johan Setia, Selangor. The haze in these regions is attributed to transboundary pollution rather than local fires.
API readings classify air quality from good (0-50) to hazardous (above 300). Authorities continue to urge public cooperation in preventing open burning to safeguard air quality. - Bernama

KUALA TERENGGANU: Three local authority officers in Terengganu have been remanded for six days for allegedly accepting bribes totalling RM25,000 in exchange for facilitating the approval process of building plans. The remand order until Saturday (Aug 2) was issued by Magistrate Yuhanis Mohd Roslan after allowing an application by the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC). A source said on Monday (July 28) that the suspects, two men and a woman aged between 40 and 50, were detained at 2.30pm on Sunday (July 27) when they turned up to give their statements at the Terengganu MACC office. "Initial investigations found that the three suspects allegedly committed the offences between 2015 and 2019. "They are believed to have received bribes amounting to about RM25,000 through separate fund transfers into their respective personal bank accounts,' the source said, adding that the alleged bribes involved 14 projects. The source also said the arrests followed the detention of a government agency director in January over a bribery case involving some RM900,000. State MACC director Hazrul Shazreen Abd Yazid confirmed the arrests when contacted, saying the case was being investigated under Section 17(a) of the MACC Act 2009. MACC records statements of 32 individuals over e-waste smuggling racket
KUALA LUMPUR: The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) has recorded the statements of 32 individuals in its investigation into a scrap metal and e-waste smuggling syndicate following raids in five states recently. According to a source, the MACC is identifying several other individuals and conducting further investigations under Section 16 and Section 18 of the MACC Act. The MACC has also recorded a statement from a man with a "Datuk Seri" title linked to the smuggling syndicate, but no arrests have been made," he said when contacted on Monday (July 28). DBKL Cracks Down On Unlicensed Pixmen At KLCC
KUALA LUMPUR, July 28 (Bernama) -- Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL) carried out an integrated operation dubbed 'Ops Lens' and issued 41 compound notices to individuals found offering unlicensed photography services around the Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre (KLCC). DBKL said the operation was carried out in collaboration with the Royal Malaysia Police, Immigration Department, National Registration Department and the Federal Territories Department. 'This operation was conducted to monitor and take follow-up action against photographers operating openly in public spaces without valid approval. 'With the involvement of partner agencies, checks were also conducted to identify individuals with criminal records, verify identification documents, and confirm their citizenship status. No arrests were made during this operation,' DBKL said in a statement today. It stressed that public spaces are shared areas and must be used ethically, responsibly, and in accordance with existing regulations. 'Unlicensed photography services are not only illegal but also pose safety risks to visitors. 'Some of these activities are carried out on roads or pedestrian paths, which not only endanger the photographers and their clients, but also disrupt the flow of public movement,' it added. DBKL said it would not hesitate to seize the photographers' gear and equipment if such activities persist without approval. 'Monitoring and enforcement action will regularly be carried out to ensure that the city remains safe, orderly and harmonious for all. Any complaints or feedback from the public can be submitted via DBKL's official communication channels,' it added.
