Al-Ahram Weekly18-05-2025
FOURTEEN-year-old sensation Farida Khalil of Egypt continued to redefine the modern pentathlon at the 2025 World Cup in Pazardzhik, Bulgaria, setting two new world records on the way to gold in the women's final.
Khalil was in irresistible form after winning gold and silver in the first two Pentathlon World Cups of the season, and she held off the challenge of Paris 2024 Olympic bronze medallist Seungmin Seong of South Korea to cross the line 19sec ahead of her nearest rival.
A new obstacle world record of 27.70sec was key to her success and the posting of an overall world record of 1,485 points, nine more than Michelle Gulyas of Hungary managed two weeks ago in the Pentathlon World Cup in Budapest. And there was more good news for the Egyptian team as Malak Ismail claimed bronze and her first medal of 2025.
France finished with two athletes on the extended podium after an exceptional laser run by Rebecca Castaudi, with Emma Whitaker of Great Britain sandwiched between her and sixth-placed Louison Cazaly.

Udinese keeper Okoye banned for two months after match-fixing probe - Egyptian Football

Udinese goalkeeper Maduka Okoye, who had been accused of match-fixing, has been cleared of all charges but given a two-month ban by the Italian Football Federation (FIGC), the Serie A club said. The FIGC National Federal Court, which met on Tuesday to discuss the charge against Nigerian Okoye, "has excluded any involvement of the player in sports offences, after accepting the arguments of his lawyers", Udinese said in a statement. "During the trial, all charges of alleged sporting misconduct were dropped, and the decision to impose a two-month ban was based solely on a violation of the general principle of fairness (Article 4 of the Federal Sports Justice Code). "The club has stated that it is satisfied with the court's conclusion that the player was not involved in the infamous match-fixing theory. The club wishes to reiterate its full support for Okoye, who is awaiting the reasons for the decision. Udinese Calcio reasserts that it is firmly convinced of Maduka's proper conduct." The 25-year-old Nigerian international was alleged to have deliberately collected a booking during his team's Italian league match against Lazio in March 2024. The German-born goalkeeper received a yellow card for time-wasting, after an alleged deal reached with a friend who won 120,000 euros ($140,000) as a result of a bet. The FIGC investigation established that there was no intention to fix the match, which would have been punishable by a four-year fine. However Okoye, who has been with Udinese since 2023, will be suspended from August 18 to October 19. He will therefore miss seven of his team's matches -- six in the league and one in the Coppa Italia. Marc Brys parts ways with Cameroon over unpaid salary - Africa

Belgian coach Marc Brys has resigned as Cameroon's national team manager, the Cameroonian Football Federation (CFF) announced on Wednesday. Brys, who took charge of the Indomitable Lions in April 2024, sent a letter to the Cameroonian Minister of Sports and Physical Education on Monday, citing unpaid salaries for himself and his technical staff for approximately 60 days as the reason for his resignation. Local media reports suggest that strained relations between Brys and Samuel Eto'o, Cameroon legend and president of the (CFF), also contributed to the coach's departure. The reports indicate that disagreements centered on team management and player selection. During his tenure, the 63-year-old guided Cameroon through 12 matches, winning seven and drawing five. Brys's resignation comes at a critical time, with the Africa Cup of Nations scheduled to take place in Morocco in four months. Cameroon, five-time African champions, has been drawn in a group alongside defending champions Ivory Coast, Gabon, and Mozambique. In the ongoing World Cup qualifiers, Cameroon currently sit second in their group, one point behind leaders Cape Verde, with four matches remaining. The qualification campaign is set to conclude in September and October. (For more sports news and updates, follow Ahram Online Sports on Twitter at @AO_Sports and on Facebook at AhramOnlineSports.)
