England overcome weather delay for emphatic test victory

Straits Times20-07-2025
WASHINGTON - An experimental England side completed a clean sweep of their Americas tour with an emphatic 40-5 victory over the United States on Saturday.
Curtis Langdon, Luke Northmore and Cadan Murley all scored tries as England were 19-0 ahead at halftime while Jack van Poortvliet, his replacement Harry Randall and debutant Gabriel Oghre added three more tries after the break. England captain George Ford put over four conversions and Charlie Atkinson one.
The Americans scored their only points on the final whistle from a line-out break finished off by Shilo Klein.
The start of the test at Audi Field, watched by some 19,000 spectators, was delayed for an hour by a weather alert and the players were taken off for a further half-hour when the referee ordered both teams off the field in the 29th minute because of a lightning warning.
The disruptions, plus high humidity, had little ill effect on England, however, as they dominated the clash and might have posted a more emphatic scoreline were it not for handling errors.
Having beaten Argentina in two tests earlier this month, despite ceding 13 players to the original British & Irish Lions squad and a further two subsequent replacements, England used six new caps against the U.S. with an eye on increasing selection options for the World Cup in two years' time.
"The conditions were difficult but it was a good group effort and a huge experience for the new players," said Ford after the final whistle.

Englishman Trafford, who won the golden glove with 29 clean sheets in the Championship last season, has re-joined the club where he spent eight years as a youth player for 27 million pounds ($36 million), English media reports said. 'Rejoining City is such special and proud moment both for me and my family. I always dreamed that one day I would be able to come back to Manchester City," Trafford said in a statement shared by City. 'This is the place I call home – it's a truly special football club with fantastic people who make it such a unique place to work and play." Trafford played on loan at third-tier sides Accrington Stanley and Bolton Wanderers before making a permanent move to Burnley in 2023, where he played his first full season in the Premier League, making 28 appearances as the club was relegated. But the six-foot-six keeper returned to form in the Championship last season, with Burnley conceding only 16 goals in the campaign, 14 fewer than champions Leeds United. "I am still very young and hungry to keep learning and improving – and I know there is no better environment than Manchester City to help make me become the best goalkeeper I can be," Trafford added. Luckless centre Garry Ringrose out of third Lions test against Wallabies with concussion review

SYDNEY – British & Irish Lions centre Garry Ringrose has been ruled out of the third and final rugby test against Australia this weekend as he goes through the 12-day concussion protocols. He was initially selected to play in last weekend's second test in Melbourne, which the Lions won to seal the series, but withdrew after experiencing concussion symptoms in training. Saturday's match at Stadium Australia was probably his last realistic chance of playing a test for the Lions and assistant coach Andrew Goodman said the 30-year-old was devastated. 'Garry was playing some amazing rugby through this tour, and it's been a dream of his for so long to represent the Lions, and he's managed to do that,' the New Zealander told reporters in Sydney. 'But he wanted to be a test match Lion, so it's been devastating for him. Everyone knows Garry's a great lad and a great team man. 'The boys have all been disappointed for him. He's obviously disappointed himself, but he's getting around everyone and making sure he helps prepare them as much as he can. He's a real leader for us in terms of a backline in particular.' Goodman said that the other players who were unavailable for selection for the second test because of injury -- winger Mack Hansen (foot), lock Joe McCarthy (foot) and centre Sione Tuipulotu (hamstring) -- all took part in training on Tuesday.
