‘I'm Shah Rukh': At Met Gala debut, Shah Rukh Khan asked to introduce himself, fans outraged

The Hindu06-05-2025
Indian superstar Shah Rukh Khan made his debut at the Met Gala blue carpet on Tuesday (May 6, 2025, India time) in New York, dazzling in an all-black Sabyasachi ensemble. It was a historic moment as Khan became the first Indian male actor to attend the Met—along with Diljit Dosanjh.
Even as many around the world tuned in for Khan's iconic debut, a section of the western press covering the event live seemed unaware of his global stature, with one reporter seemingly asking him his name. In one of the clips that have gone viral from the event, SRK is heard introducing himself to reporters, saying, 'I'm Shah Rukh.'
One of the biggest stars of Indian cinema, Shah Rukh Khan is the fourth richest actor in the world, according to a recent list by Esquire Magazine. Khan's films have transcended borders and left a lasting impact on global popular culture. As such, fans on social media were understandably outraged with a part of the media covering the MET. Terms such as 'clueless' and 'disrespectful' were used in posts decrying the treatment meted out to Khan. The incident has an echo of tennis player Maria Sharapova once saying she did not know who Sachin Tendulkar was.
Besides Khan, Diljit Dosanjh, Priyanka Chopra Jonas, Kiara Advani and designer Sabyasachi Mukherjee from India walked the blue carpet at the Met Gala 2025.
The Met Gala is dubbed one of fashion's shiniest nights, held annually on the first Monday (ET) of May. It is an annual fundraising affair for the Metropolitan Museum of Art's Costume Institute.
This year, the Institute's spring exhibit, 'Superfine: Tailoring Black Style,' was the official theme of the night, spotlighting the sartorial tradition of Black Dandyism.

'Yuzvendra Chahal ki engagement ho chuki hai,' says Rishabh Pant amidst rumours of him dating RJ Mahvash, the cricketer reacts

Yuzvendra Chahal is rumoured to be dating RJ Mahvash after he divorced from Dhanashree Verma. Their divorce just got finalised a few months ago, right before the IPL kickstarted. All through the IPL, Mahvash was present in the stadium to cheer for Yuzvendra's team, Punjab Kings and even dropped pictures while she penned a note for him. Meanwhile, Mahvash and Yuzvendra were spotted together in London which added fuel to these rumours. And now, Rishab Pant joked that Yuzvendra is engaged. The cricketers had appeared on Kapil Sharma's show and Archana Puran Singh dropped a BTS vlog from the shoot. She shares some fun moments from the episode featuring cricketers Rishabh Pant , Yuzvendra Chahal, Abhishek Sharma, and Gautam Gambhir. The players happily greeted Navjot Singh Sidhu and the rest of the team. Archana personally asked each cricketer about their lives and warmly welcomed newcomer Abhishek Sharma to the show. The vlog starts with Archana complaining about her sore throat and wondering, 'How am I going to laugh on camera tonight?' She then meets Kapil and compliments his outfit, saying, 'Where did you get this suit? It looks amazing; the black and white is looking very good.' They quickly head to the set as Kapil mentions he has somewhere to be afterward. Sidhu enters, and the cricketers gather around him. Speaking about Abhishek, Sidhu says, 'I am so proud of him, because he is the future of Indian cricket .' Archana calls Abhishek a 'very handsome boy,' and notes that both he and Kapil come from Amritsar, which helped him get on the show. Archana talks to the players and asks Rishabh about his recent accident. Rishabh says the experience gave him 'a new perspective on life' and taught him a lot. He also shares that he has started a YouTube channel, and Archana gives him a shout-out on her own channel. While talking about YouTube, Rishabh jokingly puts a ring on Chahal's finger. Archana teases, 'Are you now engaged to him?' Rishabh replies, 'Iski toh ho chuki hai pehle. ' Yuzi then clarifies, 'The engagement is now over,' referring to his divorce from Dhanashree Verma. The teasing continues when Archana invites Chahal to her home in Madh Island but quickly adds that he's probably too busy to visit Mumbai. Rishabh jokes, 'He is here all the time.' Chahal responds, 'Sabko bata de tu (Why don't you tell everyone?),' and Rishabh starts shouting it on set. The playful joke was a nod to Chahal's rumored relationship with RJ Mahvash, who lives in Mumbai.

Ed Sheeran will sing Punjabi songs now? Arijit Singh might just have made it possible

British singer-songwriter Ed Sheeran has revealed a deeply personal and transformative experience during his visit to India, where he spent time with acclaimed Indian musician Arijit Singh. The two collaborated on a new version of Sheeran's track Sapphire, and the visit not only resulted in a musical fusion but also saw Sheeran stepping out of his comfort zone—singing in Punjabi and learning to play the sitar. Ed's 24-Hour Trip to Arijit's Hometown In what Sheeran described as a 'pilgrimage of music,' the global star travelled to Jiaganj Azimganj in West Bengal, the hometown of Arijit Singh. Accompanied by his father, Sheeran made the journey as part of the final creative steps for the song Sapphire. After a five-and-a-half-hour drive post-landing, the duo explored the local sights by boat, shared coffee and conversations, and later headed into the studio. Arijit Singh sings a verse in a mix of Hindi and Punjabi, while Ed Sheeran takes on the chorus, blending English with Indian languages. The track, produced by Ilya Salmanzadeh, Johnny McDaid, and Savan Kotecha, is a clear representation of a cross-cultural musical fusion. The official video for Sapphire captures Ed's travels across India, including beaches, local kitchens, bustling markets, and even Bollywood sets. It features cameos from both Arijit Singh and Shah Rukh Khan and includes a stop at the AR Rahman music school, where Ed performed with local musicians. A Tribute to Arijit Singh's Talent Ed Sheeran did not hold back his admiration for Arijit Singh. He mentioned that he listens to this version of Sapphire every morning with his daughters, appreciating Arijit's voice, tone, and musicality. He thanked the Indian singer for his generosity and artistry, calling their collaboration the beginning of 'something bigger.' This cross-cultural collaboration is part of the build-up to Ed Sheeran's upcoming album Play, slated for release on September 12, 2025.
