UK-Based Vivobarefoot Opts For Mushroom-Based Fabric In Its Latest Shoe
London-based Vivobarefoot is making shoes with mushrooms. On a quest to find a plastic alternative to vegan shoes, the UK-based barefoot shoe company launched a new vegan sneaker, the Gobi, which is made with mycelium-based materials.
'We've always wanted to have a vegan product that's not made from plastic, but it's incredibly hard to find something that's both natural and durable enough for footwear,' says Charlotte Pumford, Director of Sustainability at Vivobarefoot.
The solution came through a partnership with HyphaLite™ an innovator in mycelium-based materials. 'Mycelium is the root structure of mushrooms, and it's incredibly versatile,' she says. 'By combining it with natural latex and cellulose, we've created a composite that looks and feels like leather, but is completely animal-free and mostly bio-based.'
This breakthrough didn't happen overnight. 'We went through dozens of prototypes. Early versions would tear after just a few days, or they'd soak up water like a sponge. It took a lot of trial and error to get to something that could actually be worn every day.'
A big challenge for Vivo has been not just to create eco-friendly footwear, but also to ensure that it lasts. 'If a shoe falls apart after a few weeks, it doesn't matter how sustainable the materials are. It has to last.' The Gobi's mycelium canvas is not only robust but also repairable, aligning with Vivobarefoot's philosophy that 'the most sustainable product is the one you can keep using.'
Repair and reuse are a growing part of the brand's efforts to keep shoes in use through its Revivo platform. 'One of the most sustainable aspects of footwear is how long it can stay on people's feet, how long you can utilize it. Making sure that you're able to repair and prolong the life of the wear before it gets to biodegradability or compostability is also really important,' she adds.
Despite these strides in using more natural materials, Pumford is candid about the complexities of creating truly biodegradable shoes. 'There's no standardized test for biodegradability in footwear. We're working with external labs and organizations to develop protocols, but it's a long process. Even if every component is natural, the way they interact can change how the shoe breaks down.'
'We're seeing promising results in lab tests, but we don't want to overpromise. Our goal is to be transparent about what we know and what we're still figuring out.'
While the vegan-certified shoe is 98% natural, there is still 2% left to address, says Pumford. 'And, you know, even when we hit 100%, it doesn't mean that it's biodegradable at that point—it just means we have 100% fully natural materials in the style.'
A major technical achievement for Vivobarefoot has been the creation of a fully natural outsole. 'The outsole is usually the least sustainable part of a shoe,' she explains. 'It's made from synthetic rubber or EVA, which are both petroleum-based. We wanted something better.'
The answer came through collaboration with Natural Fiber Welding, resulting in an outsole made from natural rubber, citric acid, and other plant-based fillers. 'It took 18 months of development and countless iterations. We had to make sure it was thin, flexible, and durable—everything our customers expect from Vivobarefoot.'
Innovating with new materials is expensive, especially when a company is operating at a smaller scale, Pumford adds. 'The cost of these next-gen materials is still really high. We're a small company, so minimum order quantities and research and development costs are a real challenge.'
To overcome these barriers, Vivobarefoot is taking a collaborative approach. 'We're sharing what we learn with other brands. If we all work together, we can bring costs down and make sustainable materials the norm, not the exception.'
This, she argues, is really just the beginning of how regenerative materials can be used in footwear and how the industry as a whole can become more circular. 'We're at the beginning of a materials revolution. Legislation is coming, customers are demanding more, and the science is catching up.'
Europe's new Ecodesign for Sustainable Products Regulation (ESPR) will require companies to design for longevity, and starting in 2026, large companies will be prohibited from destroying unsold footwear (with changes for small to medium-sized enterprises phased in). Plus, Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) legislation will require manufacturers to be responsible for collecting, sorting, and recycling goods—including unsold footwear. While much of this is still in progress, it's nudging companies to start thinking about the questions and issues facing fashion for years—and questions that Vivo has been thinking about since day one.
'We want to be at the forefront of that change. We're not just trying to make better shoes. We're trying to make shoes better—for people and for the planet.'

White Jeans Are the Travel Pant of the Summer—and We Found the 10 Comfiest and Most Flattering Styles From $25
White jeans used to feel like more trouble than they were worth—too stiff, too hot, too high-maintenance. But lately, brands have figured out how to make them actually comfortable, with soft, breathable fabrics and relaxed fits that work with summer weather instead of against it. Some even feel more like sweats than denim, making them the ideal travel pants (especially if you're usually anti-jeans on flights, like me). Whether you're heading straight from the airport to dinner or exploring a new city on foot, a great pair of white jeans can quietly anchor your whole outfit. From wide-leg pants like the Madewell Harlow Jeans to sleek straight-leg staples like the Quince High-rise Pants, these 10 pairs of white jeans prove that comfort and style can actually coexist. You'll find under-$25 picks from Amazon, classics from Levi's and Gap, and elevated takes from and Everlane. And no, I don't believe in the 'no white after Labor Day' rule—these are built for year-round wear. If you want the cool, casual look of denim without the weight, these are it. Made with Gap's signature UltraSoft fabric, this pair is designed to feel like lounge pants while still giving you the structure of jeans. The relaxed leg and adjustable drawstring waist make them a go-to for long flights, road trips, and laid-back sightseeing days. Wear them with a breezy tank, slides, and a woven tote for an Italian Riviera-ready vibe, or swap in a sweatshirt and sneakers for cozy travel days. These crisp white jeans strike the perfect balance between polished and practical. Made from organic cotton with just the right amount of stretch, they're structured enough to dress up but comfy enough to wear straight through a long-haul flight. One reviewer even wore them hiking post-arrival—and still raved about the fit. Try them with a linen button-down and leather sandals for sightseeing, then swap in a sleek bodysuit and gold hoops for dinner alfresco. $138 $100 at These Madewell Harlow pants are the jeans I personally reach for on repeat—especially during summer trips when I want to look put together without overheating. The lightweight, canvas-like denim is the perfect combination of trousers and jeans. You can wear them everywhere from office meetings to wine tastings, and they'll look good wherever you are. Just add a tucked-in tee or linen vest and a strappy sandal, and you're set from takeoff to dinner. With the look of on-trend utility jeans and comfort that rivals sweatpants, these Amazon best-selling pants are a yes all-around. Between the ultra-flattering high waist and tapered cut,, they look way more expensive than $25. Pair them with a ribbed tank and baseball cap for a travel-day uniform that's equal parts functional and cool, or elevate your look with a structured blazer and flats for museum strolls and city dinners. Bonus: they pack down easily. Don't let the denim look fool you—these 'jeans' feel more like your favorite yoga pants in disguise. Thanks to Halara's four-way stretch Flex fabric, they're breathable, featherlight, and move with you whether you're sprinting through the airport or lounging with a glass of wine in Tuscany. The low-rise cut and wide leg give off a laid-back, Y2K energy, perfect for pairing with a cropped tank and sneakers or a breezy button-up and slides. Everlane calls these Everlane pants their most comfortable jeans yet—and we believe it. They're pre-softened to perfection with an airy feel that typically takes years of wear to achieve. Translation: no break-in period required. For summer getaways, pair them with a lightweight tee and sandals for exploring local markets or go dressier with a tucked-in blouse and espadrilles for a warm-weather dinner look. Bonus: they're a whopping 70 percent off right now. This is the kind of white jean that earns a permanent place in your capsule wardrobe. Tailored for curvier silhouettes with a just-right high rise and gently flared leg, these pants are sleek enough for rooftop cocktails but comfy enough for a full day of exploring. Wear them with a silk cami and blazer in the city, or style with a tucked-in tank and raffia accessories while vacationing in France. Trust us: you'll reach for them long after summer ends. $98 at $98 $69 at Urban Outfitters A forever favorite, these Levi's 501s deliver effortless '90s vibes with a straight-leg fit that works on practically everyone. They feel sturdy and classic, just like good denim should—but still comfy enough for travel days thanks to their broken-in softness. Pair them with a baby tee and chunky sneakers for airport ease, or with a knit tank and stacked jewelry for gallery hopping or café strolling abroad. Slouchy, stylish, and effortlessly cool—these low-slung jeans bring a relaxed sophistication to any outfit. They're made from a special 100 percent cotton 'Cone denim' that is made to give structure without stiffness, and the fit feels like the jeans equivalent of a linen pant. Add a tank and Birkenstocks for casual exploring, or style them with a halter top and chunky sandals for sunset dinners. They'll look just as good rolled up and tossed in your weekender as they do in your vacation pics. $70 $35 at These straight-leg jeans from the Gap Factory serve up a laid-back energy—with a high rise that flatters while still feeling roomy. The rolled cuff detail at the ankle gives it that effortlessly styled finish (with zero effort required). Think: a white tee, leather slides, and a straw tote for a casual day of museum wandering—or pair with a blouse and chunky gold hoops for cocktails with a view. At half off, they're an easy yes. 4 Twists On The Classic Aperol Spritz For National Spritz Day
How do you make the perfect Aperol Spritz, and what are the best twists? getty The Aperol spritz captures the essence of summer. Light, bright and refreshing, the classic Aperol Spritz with its simple 3-2-1 ratio and sunny color, has captured the hearts and palate of drinkers over the last few years. "The classic Spritz works so well because it's beautifully structured—the bitterness is softened by the sparkling wine, and the soda lifts everything with a touch of brightness." To celebrate National Spritz Day I invite you to celebrate the wonderful variation of the classic spritz. To help, I've spoken to Loris Contro, Italian Icons Brand Ambassador at Campari Group UK, about four versions of the refreshing spritz to suit any palate, from the classic to a no-alcohol version. Aperol can trace its origins back to 1919, but a spritz has been around for much longer. The core of a spritz has always been that it is a refreshing, low alcohol option (as aperitivo used in a classic italian spritz are usually a similar strength to wine,) and was traditionally enjoyed as a pre-dinner drink. To make the perfect spritz, whichever you choose you'll need good quality chilled prosecco, but great soda and enough ice are just as key, as Contro explained to me over email: 'To elevate the experience, it's all about precision—the right ratio, the right glass, plenty of ice, and a fresh orange slide. Making sure your Prosecco and soda are well chilled preserves the crispness and structure of the serve. It's the attention to these small details that takes the drink from good to great." Loris Contro, Italian Icons Brand Ambassador at Campari Group UK To make an aperol spritz perfect, the most important starting point is the ratios. Handily the recipe is easy to remember using the 3:2:1 method (3 parts (75ml) Prosecco, 2 parts (50ml) Aperol, 1 part (25ml) soda). The spritz has roots in 19th-century northern Italy, where Austro-Hungarian soldiers would add a splash of water to local wine. Aperol joined the story in 1919. Campari "One of the most common missteps is getting the ratios wrong,' explained Contro. 'Too much of an ingredient can throw off the balance. The 3:2:1 method is key to achieving the perfect taste." To make the perfect aperol spritz you'll need to fill a large wine glass with high quality ice. The 75ml prosecco goes in next as this helps preserve the bubbles, and if you don't have a cocktail measure, 75ml is around half of a small serving of wine. Next add 50ml of Aperol, which is a double UK standard measure or a generous standard 1.5oz US shot. Top the glass with 25ml of chilled soda, garnish with a slice of orange and enjoy. Twist 1 - The Bold Campari Spritz If you're after an aperol spritz variation to explore this spritz day then our first twist on the classic is a campari spritz. Campari is a bold and herbal spirit that transforms the classic orange spritz into a deep and dry cocktail perfect for an evening and those that enjoy Negroni. Campari is a bit stronger too. 'The Campari Spritz is bold, fresh and full of character,' said Contro. 'Its sophisticated taste and distinctive bitter profile, balanced with crisp Prosecco and a splash of soda, makes a vibrant and well-rounded aperitivo.' If you're experimenting on your classic spritz with Campari then a slightly sweeter prosecco or a dash more soda could work well to balance the natural bitterness. Twist 2 - The Tropical Sarti Spritz If the intensity of Campari is too much then Sarti is a middle ground, drier and more bittersweet than Aperol but not as dominant as Campari. Stick with the 3:2:1 ratio for a tropical twist on your classic Aperol but garnish with lime to enhance the citrus notes. 'The Sarti Spritz has a refreshingly fruity profile with notes of passion fruit, mango and blood orange that make it incredibly approachable,' described Contro. 'The addition of the fresh lime garnish brightens the drink and enhances its citrus layers." Twist 3 - The Alcohol-Free Crodino Spritz Alcohol free aperitivo Crodino has been around since 1964 and offers a classic bitter-sweet profile but with zero alcohol. It is made from a blend of herbs and spices that are matured for up to 6 months to ensure the perfect balance of refreshing complexity. As it's naturally sparkling you can serve Crodino over ice. Equally elevate it to a true spritz by combining with alcohol-free prosecco or just a dash of soda, but fresh orange or a squeeze of lemon juice work well here too. The best thing about this non-alcoholic spritz is that its bright orange colour will pass as Aperol making it a subtle non-alcoholic switch option that is ideal for designated drivers or those looking to subtly zebra stripe their drinks. 'The Crodino Spritz is a deliciously sparkling, uniquely bittersweet non-alcoholic spritz option,' explained Contro. 'Its blend of citrus and botanicals gives it structure and complexity, offering a satisfying, alcohol-free aperitivo without compromise.' Twist 4 - The Elevated Classic Prosecco is a light and bubbly Italian sparkling wine that is easy to get hold of, and the best prosecco for Aperol spritz should be high quality and on the drier side where possible. Our final twist is a premium aperol spritz, perfect if you're in the mood to indulge. Switching your prosecco for a premium Italian sparkling wine like a Fanciancorta offers a great way to elevate your spritz recipe to something more indulgent. Fanciancorta is a traditional method (champagne style) sparkling wine that will tend to be drier than a prosecco, perfect if you want something more crisp and elevated. So there you have it, the classic Aperol spritz recipe and 4 twists to explore this spritz day. Hopefully you will enjoy the chance to try something new, and perhaps we've shown you the perfect crisp non-alcohol alternative to add to your spritz recipe list.

Get To Know Nounou, The Swimwear Brand For Your Radar
Inspired by the 1970s and her her mother's love for cotton bikinis, Anouchka Houser got thinking. When she struggled to find swimwear that felt both flattering and fun, everything slotted into place, and her swimwear brand, nounou was born. Expect a small but perfectly formed line of flirty cotton bikinis and bathing suits that call to the Mediterranean sun (talking of which, the label can be found at the super-chic Agora Ibiza). The chicness doesn't stop there as there's a seashell clasp, created with Jessica McCormack, of course the fellow London-based label who's famous for her fine jewels, which has become signature. Anouchka and her mother nounou Anouchka talks body positivity, retro inspiration, and the timeless appeal of nounou. Anouchka Houser: I had the idea for nounou 20 years ago, after my first child was born. I had my mother's cotton bikini from the '70s and wanted to create something with the same nostalgic aesthetic. Through a lot of encouragement and support from dear girlfriends, particularly Karl Templer, after years of dreaming, I finally had the courage to give it a go! AH: I couldn't find anything on the market made of cotton and felt this was missing. Also, as a mother of four I found it increasingly harder to find bikinis with coverage that felt flattering for post pregnancy. I wanted something that was minimal but still sexy, with shapes to fit most body types. AH: My great friend Jessica McCormack has been a huge inspiration and champion of nounou. During Covid I talked her through my concept, and we came up with the idea to create a signature shell clasp together, based on one of her designs. FC: What are the cornerstones of the company? AH: It's made in London; each piece is handcrafted from beautiful 100% cotton and a lingerie-like feel Italian jersey fabric. I have an incredible team of women with many years of experience between us in fashion and lingerie, they and friends are the heart of nounou. FC: How do you want someone to feel in nounou? AH: No matter how we feel about ourselves, I want women to feel confident and good about their bodies when they wear nounou. FC: What was on your mood board for the debut collection? AH: I had a crazy moodboard! A lot of references from the '60s and '70s and the photograph of my mother, which sits on our website which was the ultimate starting point. FC: What can we expect from the line? AH: The collection is ever evolving. Building on our successes, this season we introduced printed checks to the jersey collection, with synergistic solid colors. Introducing our 'forever black collection' was a milestone. A team member reminded me 'it's always sunny somewhere' so we aim to always have black pieces in stock. As we continue to grow, I've been humbled by the positive feedback from our customers, friends, and supporters of the brand. Realising we weren't catering to some women's needs, we will be introducing A and DD cups into our underwired styles for the new collection. We've even gone one step further with our jersey collection, adding a supportive layer of fabric for the bust, whilst gently sculpting the body of the swimsuits. Next season alongside the woven's, the jersey collection sees a return to femininity with retro florals prints, styled with natural wood-inspired rings. Our signature seashell clasp has been given a soft matte brushed gold finish - our nod to the classic styles of the era. FC: What's your favorite piece right now and why? AH: The Zoe swimsuit, named after my mother. I try to swim several times a week, so I like my swimsuit to be practical. It's super comfortable, hugs and supports my body. It's timeless, effortless but also a little cheeky. FC: What's the long-term plan for the brand? AH: I'm looking forward to exploring new print ideas and colors but my wish is to introduce some staple beachwear pieces, that can carry you from the beach to evening and for my customer to treasure their nounou's for years to come.
