Robert De Niro, 81, makes rare comments about trans daughter Airyn, 29, he had with ex Toukie Smith

Daily Mail05-06-2025
Robert De Niro, 81, has made rare comments about his transgender daughter Airyn De Niro, 29.
'As long as they're not hurting themselves, doing anything that's destructive or anything like that, you have to support them. Period,' the Goodfellas star said.
The New Yorker made his comments to Entertainment Tonight on Wednesday when at the world premiere of Billy Joel: And So It Goes presented on the opening night of the Tribeca Festival, at the Beacon Theatre in New York City.
He had on a gray suit while his partner Tiffany Chen, 46, with whom he has a baby, modeled a black dress with a sheer corset top as she had on ombre yellow sunglasses.
De Niro shares Airyn and her twin brother Julian, 29, with actress Toukie Smith, 72. The pair dated from 1988 to 1996.
Airyn came out as a trans woman in an interview with Them published in April.
In April De Niro said he 'loves and supports' Airyn, whom is one of his seven children.
'I loved and supported Aaron as my son, and now I love and support Airyn as my daughter,' the Oscar winner said in a statement.
'I don't know what the big deal is ... I love all my children,' the cinema icon added of Airyn, who began hormone therapy last year.
His words of support come after Airyn did an extensive interview about her coming out journey to a prominent gay, lesbian and trans magazine.
Airyn discussed how she hopes to serve as a role model for queer women of color creating their own definition of beauty.
She sat down with Them contributor Ava Pauline Emilione at a cafe in Williamsburg, New York, to talk about everything from her favorite video game, to her new pink locks, to growing up as the daughter of one of the world's most famous actors.
'Not only did they get information wrong about me…They just sort of reminded me that people really don't know anything about me,' she began.
She also talked about her parents.
'Obviously no parent is perfect, but I am grateful that both my parents agreed to keep me out of the limelight. They wanted it very private,' she said.
'They have told me they wanted me to have as much of a normal childhood as possible.'
She then addressed deciding to begin hormone therapy / transition in November 2024.
'Trans women being honest and open, especially [in] public spaces like social media and getting to see them in their success… I'm like, you know what? Maybe it's not too late for me,' she noted.
'Maybe I can start.'
And there was a reason she wanted to address her gender identity.
'There's a difference between being visible and being seen,' Airyn says. 'I've been visible. I don't think I've been seen yet.'
On not feeling accepted by the queer community after coming out as a gay man in high school: '[Gay men were] ruthless and mean. I didn't even fit that beauty standard, which is thin, white, muscular, or just super fit, masculine,' Airyn says.
'I was always told I was too much of something or not enough of something growing up: Too big, not skinny enough. Not Black enough, not white enough. Too feminine, not masculine enough. It was never just, "You're just right, just the way you are."'
Hormone therapy in November 2024 helped.
'I think a big part of [my transition] is also the influence Black women have had on me,' she says.
'I think stepping into this new identity, while also being more proud of my Blackness, makes me feel closer to them in some way.'
On learning to embody joyful, defiant womanhood from her mother: 'Whenever I'm at a family gathering on my dad's side, people would always talk about how much they love my mom and how memorable she was and how happy my dad was when he was with her,' Airyn says.
'I want to be like that…I want to be remembered the way that people remember her.'
'The way [my mom] would conduct or hold herself, the way that I saw her interact with others in public when I was younger, I see myself emulating that in some way,' Airyn says.
'Whether it's just turning on the charm or not putting on a mask, but wanting to be feminine in a way that's inviting and warm and welcoming.'
She does not like to be called a 'nepo baby.'
'I wasn't brought up having a side part in one of dad's movies or going to business meetings or attending premieres. My dad was very big on us finding our own sort of path,' Airyn says. 'I would want [success] to happen on my own merit.'
'I had two auditions for this video game, League of Legends,' she shared.
'It's one of the biggest video games I play all the time with friends. I was like, "Oh my God. That'd be so cool. It would be a make-it-or-break-it moment for me." Obviously it didn't happen. I was like, "What's the point?' It's the really big auditions that you're like, "F**k, this could have been life-changing, but it just I wasn't the right fit." And sometimes it's hard to not internalize that.'
And she hopes to be a superstar.
'I want queer people of color and bigger-bodied people to have an Alex Consani. I want queer people of color and bigger-bodied people to have a Hunter Schafer,' she shared.
'A part of me has always wanted to model and sort of follow my mom's footsteps. Honestly, if I could be on the cover of Vogue with her or recreating one of her pictures, that would be a dream come true.'
She also addressed mental health.
'People of color and queer people definitely need more mental health advocacy and support. So I'm hoping I'm able to do that,' she stated, adding, 'The field originally was so catered to white cis hetero men — what they deem as wrong or right or mentally ill or whatever, that is from their lens.'
And she wants people to understand her pain of growing up.
'I wish people saw someone who is trying their hardest to heal from growing up not feeling good about themselves,' she said. '[And] in the process of that, trying to make other people feel good about themselves.'
Smith and De Niro conceived their twins by in vitro fertilization and they were delivered via surrogate.
The former couple began dating after his divorce from Diahnne Abbott. They were together for approximately eight years.
While appearing on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon in 2020, the Hollywood legend spoke candidly about raising his biracial children.
'My children are all half black and I don't have, even me, I take certain things for granted,' De Niro admitted.
He continued: 'When people say that they tell their kids, "Keep your hands [out] when you're stopped by any cops, keep your hands on the steering wheel, don't make a sudden move, don't put your hands below, don't do this," you understand that.'
'That's scary. That has to change,' he stated, referencing the conversation around referring to police brutality following George Floyd's death. 'Anybody who hurts another person for no reason other than self-defense or the defense of other people around shouldn't be doing that job.'
That same year, De Niro reflected on whether his kids feel pressured to follow in his footsteps.
'For my kids, I tell them, "If you want to be an actor or you want to do this or that, that's fine as long as you're happy,"' he told People. 'Just don't sell yourself short. That's the most I would say — push yourself a little more and reach for what you really think it is you want to do. Don't be afraid.'
He continued: 'It's important for them to find their own lane.'
De Niro is also the father of daughter Drena, 53, and son Raphael, 48, whom he shares with his ex-wife, Diahnne. The actor is also father to son Elliot, 27, and daughter Helen Grace, 13, with ex-wife, Grace Hightower.

What to know about Legionnaires' disease, which has sickened dozens in New York City

An outbreak of Legionnaires' disease in New York City has killed two people and sickened 58 since late July. City health officials link the Central Harlem outbreak to cooling towers, structures containing water and a fan that are used to cool buildings. They said 11 of these towers initially tested positive for a type of bacteria that causes Legionnaires' disease, but the problem has been remedied. They urged people in the area with flu-like symptoms to contact a health care provider as soon as possible, especially if they are 50 or older, smoke or have chronic lung conditions. Here's what to know. What is Legionnaires' disease? It's a type of pneumonia caused by Legionella bacteria, which grow in warm water and spread in building water systems. They can be found in places such as showerheads, hot tubs and cooling towers. People often get the disease by inhaling aerosols from contaminated water. Hospital patients can also contract it through contaminated water or ice, and babies can be exposed during water births, health officials said. People don't get it from each other. Symptoms usually develop two days to two weeks after exposure and include cough, fever, headaches, muscle aches and shortness of breath, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. How does Legionnaires' disease hurt you and how can you treat it? It's important to be diagnosed quickly and treated with the appropriate antibiotics, health officials said. If untreated, the disease usually worsens during the first week, the World Health Organization said. Complications can include respiratory failure, shock and kidney or multi-organ failure. How can Legionnaires' disease be prevented? People responsible for the safety of buildings and water systems can reduce the threat by taking steps to minimize the growth of the bacteria, the WHO said. For example, they should regularly clean and disinfect cooling towers, maintain an adequate level of chlorine in spa pools and flush unused taps in buildings weekly. There are also steps people can take to reduce the risk of Legionnaires ' disease at home. New York state health officials suggest draining garden hoses; following manufacturers' instructions for cleaning and replacing water filters; checking chlorine levels in pools and hot tubs regularly and flushing hot water heaters twice a year. ___ The Associated Press Health and Science Department receives support from the Howard Hughes Medical Institute's Department of Science Education and the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation. Lady Gaga leads 2025 MTV Video Music Awards nominations, followed by Bruno Mars and Kendrick Lamar

Abracadabra, feel the beat under your feet — Lady Gaga is back on top. The 'Mayhem' musician tops the 2025 the MTV Video Music Award nominations with 12, ending Taylor Swift's two-year run in the top spot. Gaga is up for best collaboration, pop, direction, art direction, cinematography, editing, choreography, visual effects as well as song, video, album and artist of the year. Rounding out the artist of the year category nominees announced Tuesday are Bad Bunny, Kendrick Lamar, Morgan Wallen and The Weeknd as well as Beyoncé and Swift. The latter two are especially noteworthy because the two pop powerhouses are tied for the title of most career total VMAs. Each have 30. Beyoncé and Swift are only nominated in the artist of the year category at September's VMAs, so if one of them wins, they will become the most-awarded musician in VMA history. Gaga is followed closely by Bruno Mars, with 11 nominations. Lamar has 10. Sabrina Carpenter and first-time nominee Blackpink's ROSÉ are tied with eight; as are Ariana Grande and The Weeknd with seven. Billie Eilish has six. Charli xcx has five. Bad Bunny, Doechii, Ed Sheeran, Jelly Roll, Miley Cyrus and Tate McRae boast four each. The top prize of the night, video of the year, sees Gaga and Mars' 'Die With A Smile' go up against Grande's 'Brighter Days Ahead,' Eilish's 'Birds of a Feather,' Lamar's 'Not Like Us,' ROSÉ and Mars' 'APT.', Sabrina Carpenter's 'Manchild,' and The Weeknd, and Playboi Carti's 'Timeless.' The three-hour show will broadcast live on CBS on Sunday, Sept. 7 at 8 p.m. Eastern and 5 p.m. Pacific, broadcast live from the UBS Arena just outside New York City. It will also simulcast on MTV and be available to stream on Paramount+. A one-hour, live preshow will air across Paramount Media Networks. CBS is home to a number of award shows, including the Tony Awards and the American Music Awards. It has aired the Grammys since 1973, though that show will head to ABC in 2027. This year's Video Music Awards features 33 first-time nominees, which include Alex Warren, Blake Shelton, Brent Faiyaz, Gigi Perez, KATSEYE and Lainey Wilson. Mac Miller also became the first artist to get their first VMA nomination posthumously. There are also two new categories this year, best country and best pop artist. Fan voting began online Tuesday across 19 gender neutral categories and ends Sept. 5 at 6 p.m. Eastern. Voting in the best new artist category will remain active during the show.

Country singer Zac Brown, 46, reveals secret to his shocking weight loss transformation

Zac Brown has revealed the secret to his weight loss transformation after shedding an impressive 65 pounds. The country singer, 46, has been on a grueling 'spirit quest' over the last seven years, and has tried a range of diets – including veganism – to try and get there. Now, he is looking trimmer than ever and weighs in at just under 200 pounds - and he is imploring Americans to 'invest in the way that you feel.' While he used to drink alcohol, Zac has now cut out the booze from his diet completely. He also pays close attention to reading food labels and tries to keep junk food out of his house. Additionally, the artist has been working with an NFL trainer and a nutritionist to make sure that he is focusing on strength and conditioning, as well as his diet. 'I have to carry around my food with me,' he said of what he eats. 'But the diet is pretty simple. It's based on three meals a day that are about four hours apart. 'After your last meal, you fast for 14 hours. And as far as what you're eating: it's a lot of paleo, vegetables, good, clean proteins, whole foods, things that aren't just processed in a bag or in a box. 'I'm gluten-free, dairy-free, sugar-free, alcohol-free.' The country music star now weighs in at just under 200 pounds and is encouraging fans to 'invest in the way that you feel' (pictured in July) As for how he exercises, Zac revealed that he often plays games while hitting the Arc Trainer for an hour. An Arc Trainer is an exercise equipment that has its pedal move in an arcuate motion. It is great for a cardio workout and muscle strengthening. He also enjoys playing pickleball, or other outdoor activities where you're not thinking about exercising. Speaking to GQ, Zac explained that he has had to change his mindset and really focus on keeping the momentum going. 'I'm making my choices based on how I want to feel, how I want to look, and the amount of energy I have,' he said. 'My discipline for the workouts, the days that I don't feel like working out, those are the days that you really need to do it the most. It pulls you out of whatever funk you're in.' In July, it was revealed that Zac is engaged to his jewelry designer girlfriend, Kendra Scott, just a few months after they debuted their relationship on the red carpet at The American Music Awards in May. 'We are so happy and grateful that we found each other,' the couple told People. Zac proposed with a large, pink, bezel-set diamond. Both Zac and Kendra, who landed a spot on Forbes' 2025 list of America's Richest Self-Made Women, have been married before. Zac has five children with his ex-wife, Shelly Brown, while Scott has two adult sons with her ex, John Scott, and a young son with ex Matt Davis. The couple shocked the world when they made their red carpet debut at the AMA's this past spring.
