Digital bank: A promising start, with more to unfold

Bank Negara governor Datuk Seri Abdul Rasheed Ghaffour KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia's digital banking journey is making good progress and has great promise in addressing unserved and underserved segments, said Bank Negara Malaysia (BNM) Governor Datuk Seri Abdul Rasheed Ghaffour. In an exclusive interview with Bernama, the central bank governor said licensed digital banks have just begun operations, with most now focusing on growing their deposit base. "We have been seeing very good progress with deposits coming in from both underserved and unserved segments,' he said. On the financing side, Abdul Rasheed said most digital banks have yet to fully roll out their credit products to the general public. "In fact, the digital banks are still at the 'foundational phase', where they are subject to asset size limitations. It's still too early to come up with an assessment. "Products are gradually being introduced, with some being offered mainly to target groups, such as staff and families, before the full public rollout. "We will consider all the key data from the digital banks to come up with an assessment as to whether digital banks meet our ultimate aim of serving the underserved and unserved," he said. Malaysia has five licensed digital banks, namely GXBank, AEON Bank, Boost Bank, KAF Digital Bank and Ryt Bank. The five digital banks were awarded their licences on April 29, 2022 by BNM after being approved by the Ministry of Finance (MoF). Of the five, four have commenced offering their products to the public, providing a range of digital financial services, including personal banking, business solutions and Islamic banking products. GX Bank, the Grab-led digital bank, was the first to receive approval to begin operations on Sept 1, 2023. This was followed by Boost Bank, a digital banking venture formed by Boost (Axiata) and RHB Banking Group, which commenced operations on Jan 15, 2024, and AEON Bank, Malaysia's first fully Islamic digital bank that was officially launched and commenced operations on May 26, 2024. MoF granted KAF Digital and RYT Bank licences to commence their operations on Dec 20, 2024. KAF Digital is the operating entity established by an Islamic digital bank consortium, comprising Carsome, MoneyMatch, Jirnexu and StoreHub, with KAF Investment Bank Bhd at the helm. Meanwhile, YTL Digital Bank Bhd -- formed through a joint venture between YTL Digital Capital Sdn Bhd and Sea Ltd to operate as Ryt Bank -- provides a suite of services, including single-text input fund transfers and tailored financial insights, via its artificial intelligence (AI)-equipped platform. - Bernama

Bursa Malaysia to trade higher next week on US rate cut, upcoming 13MP debate

KUALA LUMPUR: Bursa Malaysia is likely to trade higher next week, supported by improved investor sentiment following the reduction in United States (US) tariffs and the upcoming debate on the 13th Malaysia Plan (13MP) during the Parliamentary sitting beginning Aug 4. UOB Kay Hian Wealth Advisors Sdn Bhd head of investment research, Mohd Sedek Jantan, said the FTSE Bursa Malaysia KLCI (FBM KLCI) is expected to trade within the 1,545 to 1,555 range. He noted that export-oriented stocks are expected to lead the rebound, with technology counters poised to benefit benefit from both global supply chain repositioning and the country's ongoing digitalisation agenda. "The 13MP unveiled by the Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim on Thursday anchors the medium-term policy around geoeconomic resilience, supply chain realignment, and digital transformation. "Of particular note is the plan's emphasis on artificial intelligence, which reinforces our constructive view on the long-overdue re-rating of the technology sector," he told Bernama. Mohd Sedek also noted that recent domestic data supports the case for recovery, highlighting the S&P Global Malaysia Manufacturing Purchasing Managers' Index (PMI), which rose for the third consecutive month—from 49.3 in June to 49.7 in July. "While the index remains just below the expansion threshold, the steady improvement signals ongoing stabilisation in the manufacturing sector," he said. Furthermore, Malaysian equities remain undervalued compared to regional peers as investors shift their focus to China's July trade data, which is due next Thursday. "As such, we remain cautiously optimistic that foreign investors will return as net buyers, particularly as they look to diversify away from the overstretched US equity markets. On a weekly basis, the benchmark index eased 0.41 of-a-point to 1,533.35 on Friday from 1,533.76 a week earlier. The FBM Emas Index increased 18.51 points to 11,525.33, the FBMT 100 Index gained 15.91 points to 11,285.63, and the FBM Emas Shariah Index climbed 11.78 points to 11,540.76. The FBM 70 Index increased 106.305 points to 16,607.57 while the FBM ACE Index dropped 14.65 points to 4,624.37. By sector, the Financial Services Index put on 25.97 points to 17,480.2, the Energy Index went up 9.75 points to 749.60, while the Plantation Index decreased 63.82 points to 7,370.97. MyKad-linked SARA aid eases financial burden for single mothers in Malaysia

KUALA NERUS: The Sumbangan Asas Rahmah (SARA) aid distributed via MyKad is proving to be a lifeline for single mothers, offering not just financial relief but also exclusive discounts at supermarkets. Noraini Sidek@Ali, a 49-year-old single mother of four, shared how the RM100 monthly assistance she receives helps her manage household expenses. 'Supermarkets here give special prices to SARA recipients when we pay with MyKad. It really helps B40 families like mine,' she said. Working as a domestic helper with a monthly income of RM600, Noraini relies on state aid and SARA to support her youngest son, who is still in school. 'This assistance lets me save a little each month,' she added. Her younger sister, Nor Laily Azura, also a SARA recipient, appreciates the convenience and security of using MyKad for purchases. 'I don't need to carry cash or a bank card. It's safer, especially when I'm out with my kids,' said Nor Laily, who lost her husband in a road accident in 2019. Despite earning RM400 a month as a homestay helper and receiving her late husband's pension, supporting her two daughters remains a challenge. The RM200 monthly SARA aid since March has eased some of her financial stress. The SARA initiative, now expanded to 5.4 million recipients, is part of the MADANI Economy framework aimed at uplifting low-income households. Budget 2025 increased allocations for SARA and Sumbangan Tunai Rahmah (STR) to RM13 billion, with annual SARA aid raised to RM2,100 per recipient. In celebration of National Day, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim announced a one-off RM100 payment for Malaysians aged 18 and above, credited directly to their MyKad-linked SARA accounts. This additional RM2 billion allocation brings total cash assistance funding to RM15 billion, the highest in Malaysia's history. Recipients can use the funds at over 4,500 participating outlets nationwide from Aug 31 to Dec 31. – Bernama
