Teenager accused of murdering 12-year-old remanded in custody until October
The 15-year-old boy, who cannot be identified because of his age, spoke only to confirm his name during legal discussions ahead of a trial planned to take place in February next year.
Prosecutors allege the youth murdered 12-year-old Leo, who was stabbed in the stomach on a riverside path in the Hall Green area, on January 21 this year.
Leo, a pupil at the Christ Church, Church of England Secondary Academy in Yardley Wood, died after being taken to hospital from the Shire Country Park, where members of the public had called emergency services.
Mr Justice Wall, sitting at Birmingham Crown Court on Monday, extended the custody time limits in the case after hearing submissions from prosecutor Rachel Brand KC and defence lawyer Alistair Webster KC.
The defendant has yet to enter pleas to charges of murder, assault, causing grievous bodily harm and having a knife in a public place relating to dates between October 22 last year and January 21.
Adjourning the case for a pre-trial review hearing to be held on October 6, the judge told the youth: 'That's the end of today's hearing.
'You are going to have another hearing in the autumn. Until that time you are remanded in custody.'

And with no immediate suspects and no eyewitnesses, the murder remained unsolved for years, and the case went cold. In 2019, detectives from the Bristol County District Attorney's Office and the Massachusetts State Police Unresolved Crimes Unit reopened the case — and found a clue they'd overlooked nearly a decade earlier. "Autopsy photos of the victim's face showed that the victim had suffered numerous abrasions and contusions which suggested that the spiny exterior of the conch shell made contact with the victim's face,' the Bristol County District Attorney's Office said in a press release. 'That suggested that the perpetrator would have to put his fingers inside the opening of the conch to hold it as firmly as was needed to strike the victim with extreme force.' When the inner portion of the shell was swabbed, a full DNA profile was developed. That profile was entered into the Combined DNA Index System, or CODIS — a national database that contains DNA from convicted offenders and arrestees across the U.S. The system returned a match: Moniz's half-brother, David Reed. Reed, then 53, had served as a pallbearer at Moniz's funeral. In 2021, he was indicted on charges of murder and armed robbery. He pleaded not guilty and remains in custody, awaiting trial. 'We had other people that we thought it might be… It turned out that the person carrying her coffin to the grave was the person that killed her,' Moniz's brother, Fred Cunha, told NBC 10 after the arrest. Reed's DNA was in CODIS because of a violent crime he committed in 2003. According to CBS News Boston, Reed assaulted a woman with a tire iron during a robbery, striking her in the head and stealing her purse while she pretended to be dead. During his attempted escape, he rammed a police cruiser with his car and fled the state, per the outlet. Reed was eventually captured in 2015 and charged with armed assault with intent to murder, armed robbery, and felony bail jumping. In 2023, he was sentenced to 8 to 12 years in state prison for that attack. He is currently serving time for those convictions while awaiting trial for Moniz's murder. Man killed and three hurt in three-vehicle crash
A man died and three people were hurt and taken to hospital in a crash involving three vehicles in Birmingham. West Midlands Police said they were called to the crash on Stratford Road, at its junction with Ladypool Road, just before 23:50 BST on Friday. A 22-year-old man, who was the driver of a Vauxhall which was one of the three vehicles, was taken to hospital but later died, a spokesperson for the force said. A callous Birmingham murderer who stabbed his pregnant girlfriend to death after she refused to get an abortion has died in prison. Evil Filmon Andmichaen had lured the victim to a secluded wooded spot off Freeth Street, in Ladywood, before killing her in August 2023. The 32-year-old had been in a relationship with Liwam Bereket, 26, who was six-months pregnant and looking forward to becoming a mum. He was found guilty of her murder following a trial at Birmingham Crown Court, which ended in November last year. He was sentenced to a minimum of 27 years in prison. Now it has emerged that Andmichaen died while serving his sentence at HMP Full Sutton, a Category A and B men's prison, near Pocklington, in the East Riding of Yorkshire. The Prison and Probation Ombudsman are investigating the circumstances surrounding the death in custody, which happened on Tuesday, July 8. The investigation status of the case is "in progress". A Prison Service spokeswoman told BirminghamLive: "Filmon Andmichaen died on 08 July 2025. As with all deaths in custody, the Prison and Probation Ombudsman will investigate." During the murder trial it emerged that almost two hours after stabbing Liwam, Andmichaen called the police and confessed to killing her, He had claimed it was an accident. Officers found Liwam with fatal injuries. Sadly, she and her unborn baby girl died at the scene. An investigation was launched and in the days that followed witnesses told police that they had previously seen Andmichaen assault Liwam in the street. Friends of Liwam's also described Andmichaen's treatment of her as "abusive and aggressive." CCTV captured Liwam and Andmichaen arriving at Freeth Street and disappearing towards woodland. It would be the last time Liwam would be seen alive. Speaking following the sentencing last year, Detective Chief Inspector Jim Colclough from West Midlands Police's Homicide Unit, said: 'It's just heart-breaking that a young woman who was looking forward to becoming a mum was killed in such a callous way. 'This was a very distressing investigation for my team, but they have been determined to get justice for Liwam and her family. Andmichaen has shown no remorse for his actions and has caused Liwam's family further pain by putting them through a trial."
