Sci-fi movies that'll make you cry about your dad

Axios13-06-2025

Want to feel emotional about fatherhood this Father's Day? Watch sci-fi.
The big picture: Sci-fi films often use fantastical plots to explore something deeply human: the love and heartbreak of the parent-child bond.
Zoom in:"The Empire Strikes Back" is about interplanetary war — and unresolved daddy issues.
"Interstellar" is about secret space travel — and the grief of being a dad watching your kids grow up.
"Contact" is about extraterrestrial communication — and the power of a father-daughter bond. The list goes on.
And there are plenty of sci-fi titles about motherhood, too — " Arrival" and " Terminator 2," to name a couple.
Zoom out: What better way to capture the vastness of the parent-child connection than through the language of the cosmos?
And at the same time, "parenthood is a very clean, direct way" to make stories with fairies, aliens or multiple dimensions "emotionally recognizable," says TV writer Marc Bernardin ("Star Trek: Picard," "Carnival Row").
"It also kind of lumps in with the feeling of being lost in a world bigger than you are, and trying to find some sense of comfort in that loss," he tells Axios.
You don't have to be a parent to connect with the themes.
FWIW: George Lucas wasn't a dad when he made the first couple of "Star Wars" films, and James Cameron didn't have children before the first two "Terminator" movies came out.
Between the lines: There's a pattern worth noting. Many of these stories are haunted by loss — often a parent or child.
You already know this if you watch enough movies and, in Bernardin's apt wording, "start to see the code of the matrix."
From the writer's perspective, when you're more than 30 minutes into the movie about to crest into the second act, "we need to propel our hero out of the comfort of the womb," Bernardin says, speaking metaphorically. "How do we do that? Somebody's gotta go."
Carly's thought bubble: Last year, pregnant and weepy during a sci-fi movie marathon, I realized how deeply the genre explores parent-child bonds.
"Arrival" and "Dune: Part Two" are now two of my favorite films. (Yes, I'm a Denis Villeneuve fan.) The former is my biggest personal tearjerker, and I'm convinced that the latter — which I saw in theaters twice — encouraged my baby to kick for the first time.
We're re-watching "Interstellar" for my husband's first Father's Day.
And this line from Matthew McConaughey's character lingers with me: "Once you're a parent, you're the ghost of your children's future."
OK, one more, from Anne Hathaway's character:"Love is the one thing we're capable of perceiving that transcends dimensions of time and space. Maybe we should trust that, even if we can't understand it."
Father's Day movie picks
Let screenwriter Colby Day ("Spaceman," "In the Blink of an Eye" out this year) be your personal Blockbuster salesperson with five of his recommendations for Father's Day sci-fi films:
1. "Contact" (1997)
" Based on a story from one of the fathers of modern science writing, Carl Sagan, this explores the intersection of faith and science. The hero's entire journey is at its core the story of a father-daughter relationship."
2. "Children of Men" (2006)
" What would our world look like without any children? Pretty bad! Clive Owen plays a reluctant hero and reluctant father figure in a sci-fi movie that also has enough action for the dads."
3. "Interstellar" (2014)
"Our generation's 'The Odyssey,' a science fiction myth of epic proportions about a man leaving his family behind to hopefully save the world, and in the process nearly losing himself."
4. "The Mitchells vs. the Machines" (2021)
" A really special father-daughter depiction and family film that also happens to have evil robots."
5. "A.I. Artificial Intelligence" (2001)

Sharp Comebacks, Beam Routines & Sisterhood: A Stick It (2006) Retrospective

The year was 2007, and I was but a chubby little girl with dreams of the balance beam and cute leotards. Stick It might have come out a year prior to my first viewing but it was on heavy rotation, whether it was on TV or begged for at my local Blockbuster (RIP) I was completely absorbed into the world of gymnasts: the drama, the endurance, the bitchin' soundtrack full of Missy Elliot and Blink-182. But recently I decided to put it on for a rewatch and it was like catching up with your friend's cool older sporty sister in the mid-aughts, but with a whole new world of nuance. The movie begins and we are met with one of the coolest 'Sk8ter Girl' breaking and entering gymnastics routines of all time, teeming with BMX bikes and police chases. Our protagonist is introduced as the juvenile delinquent and tumbling retiree Haley Graham who just can't seem to stay out of the eyes of the law. After her latest arrest, she is given the choice of military camp or VGA, she adamantly chooses to channel her inner Cadet Kelly but this world is full of false choices and she's ultimately sent off to Housten to attend the hard, blood, sweat and tear filled facility which is the Vickerman Gymnastics Academy. There she meets the hard-assed coach Vickerman and her teammates: Joanne, Mina, and Wei Wei, who all give us more background on Haley's abrupt dismount from nationals and gymnastics as a whole years befor,e and a deep dive into their catty and competitive world through side eyes, and snippy dialogue. Quickly, Haley and Joanne are pitted against each other, resulting in one of my favorite exchanges in the entire movie: HALEY GRAHAM (about the girls Burt picked for the Classics) They just get their spots handed to them? What about the rest of us? JOANNE I don't like what you're instigating, Haley. HALEY GRAHAM (whispers to herself) Instimulating? JOANNE I have earned my spot. BURT VICKERMAN Girls. JOANNE I'm practically a Dalmatian. HALEY GRAHAM Dalmatians are born with spots. They don't earn them. Which is exactly my point. JOANNE Dogs are people too, Haley! BURT VICKERMAN Very nice, Joanne! Touché! JOANNE Thank you! Slowly, our girls stop competing and begin to conspire! Unpacking the system and using it to their advantage as they compete and train as the story progresses. The end of the film presents us with a turn of events. We end at Nationals and VGA are on to win but our girls realize that their world is built upon a predatory relationship between the athlete, coaches, and judges, and sisterhood as a whole. The girls fight back by scratching or the act of fucking up on purpose for my less attuned reader. As the scores go down the solidarity between our VGA queens only grows in a stylish act of collective rebellian. Nationals are done and dusted and we end the movie with our troop of spandex gilded warriors linked at the arm, proud, and unapologetic. As the credits rolled among the plethora of messages in this movie this one stuck out to me: Gymnastics is girlhood. Flipping, balancing, bruises and performing for points are a package deal growing up as a girl in the not-so distant past and the ever more concerning future. We are shown two sides of the scale in Stick It. Haley who represents the fed up femme. Joanne, who can be compared to every classmate, relative, or friend that's been groomed to despise and compete against other women, Wei Wei, who's desire for perfectionism weakens her individuality. And Mina, who reclaims her oh-so unacceptable fault of one sliver of her bra strap showing after the most difficult routine of the entire movie by showing both in an act of revolt. All four of our reflections of girlhood not only show the different strains of perfection induced exhaustion but the power of finding strength in the girls who stand beside you. Stick It isn't just 2000s angst and MTV style editing. It's about how as women and femmes the real power is in showing up for yourself and each other. In the hypothetical 2000s Teen movie National Championships 2025 or the (TMNC2025 as i've decided to dub it two seconds ago) this one deserves a 10/10 for subversion, soundtrack, and sparkly solidarity.

Universal Asked That Scenes Be Added Back Into ‘Jurassic World Rebirth'

There's a reason why the biggest, most famous filmmakers in the world all want 'final cut' of their movies. It's because they don't want anyone, least of all a studio executive, to have an impact on their vision. More often than not, when studios meddle in editing, it's to make films shorter. However, the exact opposite happened on the new Jurassic film, Jurassic World Rebirth. Rebirth started shooting in June 2024, finished in October 2024 and, right after Christmas, director Gareth Edwards was ready to show a cut to the studio. 'I was determined to do a film that was under two hours,' Edwards told io9. 'And so we showed this one hour 59 [minute] cut to the studio. And essentially their note was like, 'Great, could you put the five minutes that you cut out back in?' And so we put those five minutes back in, and it was essentially the movie.' Which isn't to say nothing hit the cutting room floor. Though there was a very tight turnaround, especially for a blockbuster of this size, Edwards said there are three deleted scenes that will probably be available with the home release. Two he was fine with cutting. One he was very torn about. 'I really wanted [it] to stay in the movie,' Edwards said. 'I really liked it. And that was a kill-your-baby sort of moment. I won't ruin it for people, but there's a section out the front of the gas station that used to be a little bit more like being hunted. The tension of something coming. And it was a note from [writer] David Koepp, which was essentially, the third act, if you give it a name, it would be 'Run like hell.' And so basically once they started running, it was like, don't make them stop. And it felt like it stopped again. And so we removed that idea, those beats, and it got a lot better. But I do really like what happened in the bit where they did stop. And that will be on the extras.' See each and every moment of Jurassic World Rebirth when it comes to theaters July 2.
