Cameron Norrie accused of exploiting Wimbledon rule before Carlos Alcaraz match

Daily Mirror08-07-2025
Cameron Norrie came through a five-set epic against Nicolas Jarry to reach the quarter-finals at Wimbledon, but his tactics have come under fire from Pat Cash
Wimbledon quarter-finalist Cam Norrie has been accused of exploiting a timing rule ahead of his last eight showdown with Carlos Alcaraz.
The British ace found himself in hot water after his five-set win over Nicolas Jarry on Sunday. Tensions were high as Norrie clinched match point after an intense four and a half hour battle, with Jarry furious.

The Chilean wasn't shy in raising his grievances about Norrie's stalling tactics between serves, bringing it up to the chair umpire, and the pair had a notably chilly handshake post-match as Jarry bypassed the usual wait by the net.

Wimbledon legend Pat Cash has since weighed in on Norrie's tactics, telling the BBC that Norrie might well have intentionally taken advantage of the 'ridiculous' lack of a shot clock for time between serves.
Cash remarked: "They [the players] had a little natter about the ball bouncing. I don't know if he [Norrie] was trying to get some rest but the excessive ball bouncing was, well, excessive.
"I've never seen that before so maybe it was just the state he was in during the match. After the first serve you can sort of take as much time as you like, it's a sort of silly anomaly of the rule.

"You have to serve by a certain time on the shot clock, but as long as you get to the line and throw the ball in the air, you can take as much time as you like after that, which is ridiculous. Cam sort of milked that a bit. Maybe he was tired."
Cash did defend Norrie's methods too, stating: "I don't think Cam does it that extreme. Novak [Djokovic] used to bounce the ball 20 or 30 times.
"He is regrouping himself and that's the anomaly of the rule. I don't agree with quite a few of the silly rules of tennis that they have. But Norrie is within his rights to do so."

Norrie had a hunch he might have ruffled Jarry's feathers by being 'too vocal,' but Jarry addressed things in his post-match press conference.
"I don't know the rules, so I was asking [the umpire] what I asked," Jarry explained. "He's very competitive, so he knows how to make the most of the important games in the important parts of the match."

Now Norrie takes on two-time Wimbledon champion and world No.2 Alcaraz - with Tim Henman giving him a 100-1 chance of success.
Henman said: "I just think it's a difficult match up. How does he beat him? In normal circumstances you would say try and shorten the points, but that isn't the Norrie style. Does he want to extend the points? Against Alcaraz that is difficult. He's got to serve very well.

'He's got to extend the rallies at times. He's got to take risks from the back of the court. He's got to keep flattening out that backhand, which is effective on grass. And he's probably got to hope that Alcaraz has a bad day. I think that's the reality.
'Anyone's beatable. If they played 100 times, can Norrie win one? Maybe. It's unlikely. But it's sport. There are no scripts.
"And I know Cam well, he's a great competitor. He gets absolutely everything out of his game. He's got to believe he can do it. But if they played 100 times, he probably can win once."

Hugo Ekitike explains why he wore a Steven Gerrard shirt before signing for Liverpool

Liverpool new boy Hugo Ekitike has opened up on viral images that showed him wearing a classic Steven Gerrard shirt ahead of his transfer from Frankfurt this week Hugo Ekitike has revealed that pictures of him wearing a classic Steven Gerrard jersey were down to his brother buying him one whilst there were preparing for holiday. ‌ Images of the Frenchman went viral as he donned a vintage Reds top with their iconic captain's name, back when he begun his career and wore No 28. This was whilst he remained a Frankfurt player but Liverpool were known to have been interested before they eventually secured his signature. ‌ The Reds paid £79million to secure Ekitike's services but he claims that picture of him in a Gerrard top were by no means a way of attracting attention or trying to fuel the rumour mill. ‌ The 23-year-old has just enjoyed his breakout campaign in Germany after previously being on PSG 's books. Liverpool fought off competition from Newcastle to land Ekitike but the player has explained his Gerrard snaps. He told the club's website: "The story behind it is that I was going on vacation and obviously I had some training [sessions]. I like vintage jerseys and my brother went to the shop and bought that one and obviously you know the next part of the story: now I am here! He is maybe the first legend here at Liverpool so yeah, big up to him and it's a very good jersey." Gerrard remains an iconic figure at Anfield and is seen by many as their greatest ever player. He won every honour despite the Premier League, but this current group are now aiming to become the first Reds' side ever to win the competition in successive years. Arne Slot, who conquered England's top flight at the first attempt, has attacked the transfer market in an effort to make Liverpool an even more formidable outfit. Ekitike will arrive as the team's new frontman and believes now is the right time to make the switch. The Frenchman said: "I think that was the right moment. I came to the Bundesliga hungry, I wanted to show that I'm a good player and I can make the difference on the pitch. I think I did well last season. Now, I feel ready to make a bigger step and to play on the highest level, to improve myself, to see what I can do. That's why I think it's the right timing for me and the perfect moment to come here." Liverpool have also added Florian Wirtz for a British-record fee from Bayer Leverkusen. Defensively the Reds have also bought in Milos Kerkez and Jeremie Frimpong. Now there is talk of Alexander Isak joining from Newcastle.

Belgian Grand Prix sprint race and qualifying: Formula One

Update: Date: 2025-07-26T09:23:44.000Z Title: Preamble Content: British drivers have dominated the sprint races so far this season, with two previous edition being won by Lewis Hamilton (China) and Lando Norris (Miami), but the chances of that run being extended this morning are not high. Norris will start third on the grid, behind teammate Oscar Piastri, who is on pole, and Max Verstappen. Norris has a very slim chance of pulling level with Piastri at the top of the drivers' standings qualifying should he overcome the odds, win the sprint and see Piatri fail to score. In all likelihood, Piastri will start this afternoon's qualifying with a small increase in his lead there. Hamilton is all the way down in 18th after an error in sprint qualifying yesterday saw him fail to make it out of the first session. Oliver Bearman, who qualified in seventh for Haas, has a better chance of extending the British run of sprint winners this season than the Ferrari driver. The sprint race has had little correlation with either qualifying or the Grand Prix winner this season, so trying to read too much into it is misguided but hopefully it's a nice little amuse-bouche to the action to come. What was clear from yesterday's qualifying is that the McLaren are quickest on the corners, with Piastri and Norris ahead of Verstappen in the bendy sector two, so if the Briton can find a bit more speed in the straighter sections he has every chance of bettering the Red Bull. That said, it could well be that we have a 15-laps of smoke and mirrors. We'll find out soon.

BBC Sports Personality odds: who is favourite to win?

BBC Sports Personality of the Year Award will be handed out at the end of 2025 - but a frontrunner has emerged 👀 Sign up to our Arts and Culture newsletter Sign up Thank you for signing up! List includes darts favourite, golf star and F1 driver. But who is being backed to lift the end of year prize? The sunshine might have pulled another disappearing act but we are still in the heart of summer. Unbelievable as it might be but we are well past the midway point of the year and it will be 2026 before you know it. It has been quite the dramatic first half of 2025 in the sporting world - from Liverpool securing a 20th league title to the two Lukes crashing out of the darts World Cup. The Lionesses have taken us on one mighty rollercoaster during the 2025 Women's Euros this summer - and the men's U21s have also lifted the title in their own version of the competition. Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad A British driver remains in the hunt for the Formula One world title - but will Lando Norris be able to surpass his teammate and rival Oscar Piastri? It would be one hell of a story. In a little less than five months time, the BBC will gather to celebrate the best sporting achievements of the year - and hand out the much coveted SPOTY award. But who is in the running right now? Who are the early favourites for the 2025 Sports Personality? The presenters of this BBC Sports Personality of the Year 2024 | BBC/Paul Cooper Olympic champion Keely Hodgkinson lifted the trophy last December following her incredible performance at the 2024 games in Paris. Sidenote: what an incredible few weeks that was, wish I could jump back and experience those highs once again. Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad The BBC will once again crown a winner at the end of the year - and attention has started to turn towards who are the runners and riders for 2025. has issued its odds, with one name jumping out as a clear favourite at this point. Rory McIlroy - 4/6 Lando Norris - 13/2 Luke Littler - 8/1 Ellie Kildunne - 28/1 Jack Draper - 40/1 Lauren Price - 40/1 Leah Williamson - 45/1 We obviously still have a long way to go in 2025 and the final of the Women's Euros on Sunday (July 27) could dramatically shake-up the odds. If the Lionesses manage to lift the trophy once again, someone like Leah Williamson could really jump up the list - for example. Beth Mead was named SPOTY in 2022, following England's triumph at the Euros that summer. Her international teammate Mary Earps won it the following year - for her role in the Lionesses' run to the World Cup final, so there is precedent. Ellie Kildunne is one to keep your eyes on as she is one of the star players for the Red Roses - England Women's rugby team. The team will be playing in the World Cup, on home soil none-the-less, starting in late August and triumph in the tournament could see her odds tumble. Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad Equally, if Lando Norris manages to surpass Piastri and secure the F1 World Drivers' Championship he could easily become one of the frontrunners. Drive to Survive remains a very popular show on Netflix and he is a known name. But if the award was to go the way of the current odds and Rory McIlroy capped off the year in which he finally won The Masters with a SPOTY award - it would be the first time since Lewis Hamilton in 2020 that a male athlete has lifted the trophy.
