NEW DELHI: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday said that the
Indian armed forces
made the "enemy" (Pakistan) fall to its knees in just 22 minutes during
Operation Sindoor
, adding that 'Made in India' defence equipment played a decisive role which demonstrated India's capabilities and its firm stance against terrorism.
"Recently, the world saw what India is capable of. Operation Sindoor has made India's tough policy against terrorism absolutely clear to the world. We have shown that no place is safe for terrorists who shed the blood of Indians," the PM said at an event to mark the centenary celebration of the conversation between social reformer Sree Narayana Guru and Mahatma Gandhi.
Modi said his govt had worked on the ideals of the revered spiritual guru who wanted a strong India that was free of any discrimination.
"Sree Narayana Guru wanted a strong India. For the empowerment of India, we have to be ahead in every aspect - economic, social and defence. Today, the country is moving on this path. India is rapidly moving towards becoming the world's third largest economy," he added.
Reiterating that today's India took steps according to what was right in the national interest, Modi said the country's dependence on foreign nations for military needs was also constantly decreasing.

"We are becoming self-reliant in the defence sector. And we have seen its effect during Operation Sindoor as well. Our forces forced the enemy to surrender in 22 minutes with weapons made in India. I am confident that in the times to come, made in India weapons will be famous all over the world," he said.
Modi cited the govt's welfare schemes in housing, drinking water and health insurance, among others, to state that these had empowered deprived and backward sections of society.
More IITs, IIMs and AIIMS have been opened in the last 11 years than earlier, he said.
In a swipe at previous govts, he said despite decades of independence, millions of citizens were forced to live in extremely difficult circumstances till a decade ago.
"Crores of families lacked shelter and lakhs of villages had no access to clean drinking water, while even minor illnesses could not be treated due to lack of healthcare," he said. Poor people and women were deprived of basic human dignity, the PM added.

India's Crude Oil Imports From U.S. Jump 51% Since Donald Trump's Return To White House

India has sharply increased crude oil imports from the US during President Donald Trump's second term, marking a major energy policy shift. In the first half of 2025, US crude imports rose over 50% year-on-year, reaching 0.271 million barrels per day. The April–June quarter saw a 114% surge, with the value rising from $1.73 billion to $3.7 billion. In July, imports rose 23% over June, increasing the US share in India's oil mix from 3% to 8%. LNG imports nearly doubled to $2.46 billion, and LPG imports also grew. Talks are ongoing for a long-term LNG deal. Despite growing energy ties, a setback emerged as Trump announced 25% tariffs on Indian goods, effective August 7, citing trade barriers, imbalances, and India's ties with Russia. He posted strong criticism of India on Truth Social, dismissing its economic relationship with the US and calling for separation from Russia-linked economies.#crudeoil #indiaustrade #trumptariffs #energytrade #indiarussia #lng #lpg #truthtalk #geopolitics #internationalrelations #toi #toibharat Read More

ECI's neutrality questionable; Opposition wants discussion in Parliament: Gaurav Gogoi

Senior Congress leader Gaurav Gogoi on Sunday (August 3, 2025) alleged that the neutrality of the Election Commission is questionable, which is why the Opposition parties want a discussion on the revision of the voter list in Parliament. Also Read | SIR exercise is 'an insult to migrant workers and gross interference in right of electorate in T.N.': Chidambaram Speaking to reporters before the start of the Extended Executive Meeting of the Assam unit of the Congress, Mr. Gogoi, who is also the deputy leader of the party in Lok Sabha, questioned the BJP-led central government's decision not to allow a discussion on the ECI even though the Chief Election Commissioner is appointed by it. "Today, there is a question mark in the minds of the people regarding the neutrality of the EC. That is why we want a discussion in Parliament. The government is trying to hide something. What is it? Is it their manipulation in the last assembly polls and Lok Sabha election?" the Assam Congress chief asked. 'The common people should know the status of their voting rights and details of polling stations. We want a discussion on this, but the government is saying they cannot discuss the matter.' said Mr. Gogoi "Their logic is that the Election Commission is not related to any department. This is an absurd logic because the Chief Election Commissioner is appointed by the PM and government," he added. Mr. Gogoi also claimed that there have been instances of electors visiting a polling station during voting, coming to know that their names are missing from the list. Speaking about Operation Sindoor, the Congress MP said, "The Union Home Minister did not even give minimum respect to the deceased of the Pahalgam terror attack. People died because of intelligence failure of the agencies under his ministry, but they did not apologise to the people. That's their nature." The Extended Executive Meeting of Assam Pradesh Congress Committee began here on Sunday morning. All party MPs, MLAs and senior leaders of the state unit participated in it. In the meeting, the strategy for the upcoming Assembly elections in the State will be discussed threadbare, an official said. Assembly elections in Assam for 126 seats are likely in March-April next year. "The meeting will adopt two resolutions. One will be political and the other will be economic. These will be prepared keeping in mind the upcoming assembly polls," the party official said.
