Murderbot – Season 1 Episode 4 Recap & Review

The Review Geek30-05-2025
Escape Velocity Protocol
Episode 4 of Murderbot begins with us back at Corporation Rim at the Threshold Pass in the Fabrication Center. This is where the SecUnits are made, with humans pushed way beyond their capabilities. Of course, anybody who's worked to the bone and not their sharpest are prone to make mistakes, and every part of this process is littered with issues or problems.
It's a nice way of showing off the entire production process, throwing shade at factories that make products for thousands and pay their workers pittances. Nice work, Apple!
We're then blasted back to the present where MurderBot is dragged up the hallway by its assailant. Dumped on a table, MurderBot bides its time before suddenly singing the Sanctuary Moon theme. It fights off the attacker after, but unfortunately not before it gets the Combat Override Module locked in.
Things look hopeless, until Dr Mensah arrives with a mining drill and manages to take out the attacker. As they stumble off the ship, MurderBot is in and out of consciousness, seeing himself on the Sanctuary Moon set and stumbling through the hallways too.
Back at the ship, the others are not happy when they find out Pin-wee was ordered back onto the chopper by Mensah. Ratthi grabs a gun and heads out, soon to be joined by the others, as they prepare to fight back. Ratthi hits himself in the head and isn't much help, while Pin-wee manages to drop the ship right on the robot attacker, eventually squashing it.
Unfortunately, the damage has been done. The Combat Override Module looks set to switch on and set its sights on them all. Murderbot decides to sacrifice itself though, turning the gun on itself and firing.
The Episode Review
So Murderbot returns this week with an action-packed episode, one that dives into the morals of this bot and how strangely human it actually is. We still don't know who or what this attacker is and why it's so interested in overriding Murderbot's programming, but I'm sure we'll find out later in the series.
The episode works well to add in some drama and comedy in equal measure, interwoven around the story that zips by at a frantic pace.
The storyline is nicely structured as a result, and the ending certainly leaves everything wide open for the next episode.

I was scammed out of hundreds by ‘Jennifer Aniston' who told me she loved me & needed cash for her ‘Apple subscriptions'

Paul Davis, 43, from Southampton, handed over the money after believing he was talking to the Friends star on Facebook. The unemployed Brit, who battles depression, revealed how he was bombarded with dozens of eerily convincing videos from bogus celebrity accounts. Some fraudulently posed as tech titans Mark Zuckerberg and Elon Musk. But it was a phoney Aniston who finally fooled him after sending what looked like her driving licence. The fraudster also told Paul she 'loved him' before asking for money. Paul said: 'I've had fake videos from Jennifer Aniston saying she loves me and asking for £200. I believed it – and I paid.' The cruel scam saw him send £200 worth of non-refundable Apple gift cards to the supposed Hollywood sweetheart. 'I got bitten,' he added. 'Once bitten, twice shy.' The shocking con is part of a terrifying rise in AI-powered scams, with crooks creating scarily real deepfake clips of celebs to trick unsuspecting victims out of their cash and private info. Paul says he's been relentlessly harassed for months, receiving fake messages every day claiming he's won everything from mega cash prizes to a flashy Range Rover. My mum's being scammed by an AI deepfake of 'Owen Wilson' who paid her £7 to 'prove' his identity - would you fall for it? One video even showed a fake Zuckerberg declaring: 'This is not a scam - believe me' while flashing a dodgy ID. Another sent him a bogus 'certificate from Facebook' claiming he'd scooped £500k and a luxury motor. 'They make it look so real,' Paul said. 'It's been going on for five months. I thought someone would get in trouble for this, but they seem to be having a laugh – and getting away with it.' Worryingly, Paul says he's not the only one falling victim. He revealed: 'Someone I know's lost over a grand in Apple gift cards to these scams." Now, struggling with his mental health and unable to work, Paul says the constant barrage of cons is taking its toll. Paul said: 'I can't keep taking that sort of hit. They're asking for bank details, credit card info - everything.' 7 Messages between Paul and the fake Jennifer Aniston Credit: Solent 7 He also received scam messages from someone posting of Tesla owner Elon Musk Credit: Solent 7 Facebook creator and tech whiz Mark Zuckerberg is also used by scammers Credit: Solent The 43-year-old says he is sharing his story in a bid to warn others and stop the scammers in their tracks. Interior designer Anne, 53, was scammed into funding a fake cancer treatment for the star after receiving AI-generated selfies and sweet-talking texts. The cruel romance con lasted over a year, costing Anne her fortune, her marriage, and her mental health. Eventually a crack team discovered the scammer's identity, his Nigerian base, and 34 other victims. Meanwhile, another woman put out a call for help after noticing her mum fall for an AI deepfake scam of Owen Wilson. The unnamed woman took to Reddit, revealing both she and her sister had failed to convince her mum that the man she was chatting to was not the real actor. She decided to share the AI deepfake video her mum had been sent by 'Owen Wilson' with the title 'Owen Wilson befriended my mother.'

A-List Hollywood heartthrob is unrecognizable in long beard and wig in Project Hail Mary trailer

The trailer for Amazon MGM's Project Hail Mary has dropped and its A-List star looks unrecognizable. Ryan Gosling plays bookish school-teacher turned astronaut Ryland Grace in forthcoming science fiction film adapted from author Andy Weir's 2021 novel of the same name. He looks completely different in a long haired wig and long, scruffy beard. Fans of this actor may be able to suss out his identity through his soulful blue eyes that give away his true identity, no matter how different he looks from his everyday style. In the trailer, Ryan wakes up in this disheveled state, confused and wondering where he is. He has no memory of his past or how he ended up on the spaceship. His character states that he just woke up from a coma in outer space and is 'several light-years' away from his apartment. 'I'm not an astronaut,' he declares multiple times, as the trailer reveals the event leading up to him going to space. Ryland is a middle school teacher with a PhD in molecular biology and is recruited by a space force to figure out why the stars, including the sun, are dying out. As the trailer goes on it is revealed the stars were infected with something deadly and it is Ryland's job to find out why. Ryland's mission to space is a 'Hail Mary,' last ditch effort to stop the stars from dying and save all life forms. He expresses hesitancy at being tasked to save all life, saying, 'I understand the stakes, I do. But my place is in the classroom.' He did not want to go to space but when he was told he'd die along with everyone else, he changed his mind. As the trailer goes on, we see Ryland shave his tangled beard off and break down in tears at the enormity of the mission he's been tasked with. At the end of the trailer, Ryland declares that he's met an alien and he tries to teach it Hacky Sack and how to do a thumbs-up. It is revealed that the alien has been tasked with the same job as Ryland. He needs to figure out how to save his species. The trailer features Harry Styles' Sign of the Times as it follows Ryland's attempts to save, essentially, the universe. The film is directed by Phil Lord and Christopher Miller and hits theaters on March 20, 2026. The first footage of the film debuted at CinemaCon in Las Vegas. Sandra Hüller's character ominously says, 'The sun is not the only star dying. If we do nothing, everything on this planet will go extinct.' At CinemaCon, Gosling took a playful swipe at his directors, saying of Lord and Miller, 'They are only happy if they make you do the very rare and coveted laugh-cry.' 'It's an insanely ambitious story that's massive in scope, and it seemed really hard to make, and that's kind of our bag,' Gosling said about the film at CinemaCon, per Variety. He continued: 'This is why we go to the movies. And I'm not just saying it because I'm in it. I'm also saying it because I'm a producer on the film.' Project Hail Mary also features Sandra Hüller, known for 2023's The Zone of Interest" and Anatomy of a Fall. The screenplay was written by Drew Goddard.

Four-year-olds ‘exploited' by tech giants' app store age ratings

Children as young as four are being exploited because of misleading age ratings on Apple and Google's app stores, it has been claimed. The recommended app store ages for some of the most popular apps, such as Candy Crush Saga, Whiteout Survival and Toca Boca World, are much younger than the limits set by developers in the terms and conditions. This leads to young children being left in the 'firing line' of in-app purchases, targeted advertising and data processing, campaigners say. The Good Law Project and 5Rights, a charity protecting children's digital rights, have filed a legal complaint with the Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) over the issue. Candy Crush Saga, which has 275 million monthly users, has an age rating of 4+ on Apple and 3 on Google, but its terms and conditions say players have to be at least 13. For Toca Boca World, which has 60 million monthly users, the ages are 4+ on Apple and 3 on Google but the terms and conditions say under-18s need parental consent. Whiteout Survival, which has 10 million monthly users, is rated 4+ on Apple and 7 on Google but its policies set a minimum age of 13 and under-18s need parental consent. All these games are free to download but generate revenue from in-app purchases, as well as data processing and advertising. Apple and Google can take up to 30 per cent of this revenue. The disparity is created by the app stores rating on content of the games but developers state ages based on data-processing laws. Of the top 500 apps by in-app revenue, 45 per cent display a lower age rating in the app store than terms and conditions and 74 per cent have a lower app-store age than the privacy policy, the complaint says. Duncan McCann, Good Law Project's tech and data policy lead, said: 'These tech giants are refusing to do the right thing and act, simply because it is so lucrative not to do so.' Leanda Barrington-Leach, executive director of 5Rights, said: 'It is unfathomable how Apple and Google can so blatantly mislead consumers.' The CMA is investigating whether Apple and Google have 'strategic market status'. If the regulator finds that they do, it can impose conduct requirements on them. Apple said: 'We are committed to protecting user privacy and security and providing a safe experience for children.' Google said: 'Google Play does not control app ratings — these are the responsibility of the app developers and the International Age Rating Coalition. Ratings in Europe (including the United Kingdom) are maintained by Pan European Game Information.'
