Golf: Lydia Ko six strokes off the pace at last major of year

New Zealand's Dame Lydia Ko is six strokes off the pace after the first round of the Women's Open at Royal Porthcawl in south Wales.
Japan's Eri Okayama and Rio Takeda topped the leaderboard, with rounds of five-under 67, while Ko had a one-over 73 as she failed to take advantage of calm conditions on the coastal course.
Fellow Kiwis Amelia Garvey and Momoka Kobori were a stroke further back, in joint 91st place.
Ko won the event last year at St Andrews, but
it is her first time playing in Wales.
She opened well enough in the final major of the year, with a birdie on the first hole but negated that with a bogey on the par-4 third hole.
She had one more birdie, on the ninth hole, while dropping shots at the par-5 13th and the par-3 15th before finishing in a 17-way tie for 74th place.
Garvey had birdies on the same two holes that Ko birdied, with four bogeys spoiling her round, while Kobori had a late spree of three consecutive bogeys after an early double-bogey before finishing with her second birdie.
Okayama's five-under 67 gave her the lead before she was joined by Takeda after she birdied the 18th, Reuters reported.
Japanese players dominated the opening day with Miyu Yamashita at four-under ahead of a large group on three-under that included Chevron Championship winner Mao Saigo, Shiho Kuwaki and Chisato Iwai.
World number one Nelly Korda finished two-under par.
Okayama, who is world number 139, bogeyed her opening hole but birdied five of the next eight and was rock solid on the way back with another birdie at the 17th moving her ahead.
Takeda recovered from a double-bogey seven at the ninth with four birdies on the back nine, putting her joint first.
By far the largest galleries assembled just after lunchtime to watch England's Lottie Woad in a group alongside Ko and American Lilia Vu.
An astonishing July, which culminated in Woad winning the Scottish Open in her first event as a professional, had made the 21-year-old favourite for the year's final major.
But the former Florida State University player found the going tough as she ground out a level-par round of 72 thanks to a birdie at the last.

New Zealand's Nathan Smith Photo: Kerry Marshall/ Another injury concern for the Black Caps with pace-bowling allrounder Nathan Smith ruled out of the remainder of the Zimbabwe Test series with an abdominal injury. Smith sustained the injury while batting on day two of the first Test in Bulawayo. A subsequent MRI has confirmed he picked up an abdominal strain which will require approximately two to four weeks recovery. Zak Foulkes, who recently played in the T20I Tri-Series against Zimbabwe and South Africa, has been called into his first Test squad to replace Smith. Smith recorded three for 20 in Zimbabwe's first innings. New Zealand won the Test by nine wickets inside three days. Meanwhile Auckland Aces Ben Lister has also been called in as additional pace cover for Will O'Rourke who experienced back stiffness on day three and is being monitored. Captain Tom Latham also missed the opening Test with a shoulder injury and it is unsure if he will be available for the second Test which starts on Thursday. Clareburt fails to make World Swimming Championships final
New Zealand swimmer Lewis Clareburt Photo: AAP / Defending champion Lewis Clareburt of New Zealand failed to reach the final of the 400 metres individual medley at the World Swimming Championships in Singapore. Swimming in the fourth and final heat, Clareburt finished fifth in a time that was five seconds outside his best. Only three swimmers from what is traditionally the fastest heat qualified for the final, including French star Leon Marchand who ended up seventh fastest. However Olympic champion Marchand was back to his best in the final, finishing well clear of Japan's Tomoyuki Matsushita, the Paris Games runner-up. It was a stripped-back programme from Paris where Marchand won four individual titles but he made Singapore count, taking the 200 IM world record on the way to the title. Canadian Summer McIntosh capped a brilliant world championships with the 400 IM title and a fourth individual gold medal. World record holder McIntosh blitzed the field finishing more than seven seconds ahead of joint silver medallists Jenna Forrester of Australia and Japan's Mio Narita. The Olympic champion's third 400 IM world title added to her 200 IM, 200 butterfly and 400 freestyle golds at the Championships. The United States set a world record in the women's 4x100 medley relay to claim the final title and ensure they topped the medals table with nine golds, one ahead of Australia. France finished third with Canada fourth, all four of their golds won by 18-year-old McIntosh, only the third swimmer to win five individual medals at a world championships, joining Michael Phelps (2007) and Sarah Sjostrom (2019). -Reuters / RNZ
