Armed men on motorbikes kill 34 Niger soldiers, ministry says
The attackers - described as "mercenaries" by the ministry - used eight vehicles and more than 200 motorbikes in the raid on the base in Bani-bangou on Thursday, according to the statement read out on state TV.
Islamic State claimed responsibility for the attack on the army base in a statement on its Telegram channel on Friday.
Niger, like other countries in West Africa's Sahel region, is battling Islamist militants linked to al Qaeda and Islamic State.
Troops carried out aerial and ground search operations to secure the area after the attack, the ministry said without going into more detail on the assault.

Meanwhile, Radio Caracol reported that Amilcar Pantoja, mayor of the Colombian border town of Ipiales, confirmed that around 700 Colombian detainees were being sent across the binational bridge without prior official notice. Two killed in Lahad Datu motorcycle crash

The incident occurred around 11.30pm when two motorcycles travelling from Embara Budi towards Cenderawasih were struck by a third coming from the opposite direction. District police chief ACP Dzulbaharin Ismail said the victims included a 12-year-old Indonesian boy riding a Yamaha and a 19-year-old man on a Honda, both of whom died at the scene. A 20-year-old Indonesian pillion rider on the Yamaha suffered injuries, while the 18-year-old Yamaha Lagenda rider escaped unharmed. 'The accusation is a very serious slander, baseless, and has affected my personal dignity, my family's good name, and the reputation of the Unduk Ngadau institution,' she wrote. She firmly denied any involvement in the alleged affair, describing the claims as harmful and emotionally distressing.
