Moray schoolgirl's message in a bottle gets reply from Norway 31 years later
A Scottish schoolgirl's message in a bottle has finally received a reply more than 30 years later - after being discovered in Norway.Alaina Beresford, from Portknockie in Moray, sent the message in 1994 when she was 12 as part of a school project. It washed up across the North Sea where it was found by a volunteer cleaning up a Norwegian island - who then dispatched a postcard to the delighted sender to let her know.Alaina told BBC Scotland News she could not believe her original letter was in such good condition after three decades.
Her handwritten letter had been sent in an empty bottle of Moray Cup, a fizzy drink produced in the north east of Scotland.
It said: "Dear finder. My name is Alaina Stephen and I am 12 years of age. I come from Portknockie and I am doing a project on water so I decided to send a message in a bottle."My teacher's husband took them and dropped them in the middle of the ocean."When you find this message, please write back with your name, hobbies, where you found the message, when, and if you could, a little information about your area. Yours sincerely, Alaina Stephen. PS I come from Scotland."
Now, 31 years on, Alaina has received a postcard from Pia Brodtmann, telling her the good news, with pictures of the find.It said: "My name is Pia and I am from Germany. Today I found your message in a bottle on Lisshelløya, a tiny island around Vega in Norway."I am here for beach cleaning as a volunteer for four months and today we cleaned Lisshelløya. On the front of the postcard you can see our workboat Nemo and our sailboat Fonn, where we live. You can also see the area around Vega. I wonder when and where your teacher's husband threw your bottle in the ocean?"It added: "PS I am 27 years old and I like rock climbing and sailing a lot!"
Alaina, now 42, said she as stunned when she picked up the post and noticed the postcard addressed to herself."I'm at the same address," she said."I did live in Buckie, and another house in Portknockie for a while, but moved back in with my parents."I couldn't believe it, as I had sent it when I was 12 years old, 31 years ago."
Alaina was able to find Pia via social media, and messaged her asking to send a photo of her letter."I was shocked when she did, I couldn't believe how legible it was," she said."I can't remember actually writing the message, but I do remember it was a Moray Cup bottle, and that my teacher's husband had dropped it into the sea when he was a fisherman."According to my message, I had done it as part of a project on water. It was when I was in P7."She added: "Pia and I have been keeping in touch and hopefully we will continue to do so."

EXCLUSIVE Gavin & Stacey star Mathew Horne cuts a low-key figure as he joins rarely seen wife Celina Bassili at Glastonbury - after it was revealed they'd secretly welcomed a son
He turned his back on the limelight after falling out with Gavin & Stacey co-star James Corden. And even during his visit to Glastonbury, actor Mathew Horne tried to go under the radar. But fans spotted the star, who plays Gavin Shipman in the popular comedy, as he had breakfast with his wife Celina Bassili on Saturday morning. Dressed in a black sweatshirt, shorts and a matching baseball cap, he and Celina were overheard discussing what bands they were going to see. One onlooker told MailOnline: 'Mat has grown his hair so he was almost unrecognisable but then you hear his voice and there was no doubt it was him. 'For his level of fame there was no fanfare at all, not like some of the other big stars. He was sitting quietly with his wife taking in the sunshine. 'It was only a few months ago since he was the star of the Gavin and Stacey Christmas special which was watched by 18 million people. 'lt was so refreshing to see.' Celina posted a series of photos and videos on her Instagram site after she and Mat, 46, arrived at Worthy Farm, including a sweet snap of the pair together. Mat previously attended Glastonbury in 2009. Mat and Celina married in a secret wedding held at a 1930s mansion in the bride's native Norway in 2021 after they began dating in 2019. The actor is said to have welcomed the child with set designer Bassili shortly after their wedding in September 2021. Mat was previously engaged to Evelyn Hoskins, star of BBC medical drama Casualty. Mat and Corden fell out in the late noughties following the success of BBC One comedy. While Corden went on to be a star of Broadway and the West End after his appearance in theatre show One Man, Two Guv'nors, and latterly Hollywood where he hosted The Late Late Show on US network CBS, Mat lived a much quieter life. Mat plays Gavin, the son of Pam and Mick Shipman in Gavin and Stacey, which hit our screens in 2007. Close friends, among them Gavin & Stacey co-stars James Corden and Joanna Page, are understood to be aware of the birth - which was not made public by the couple at the time. A source told The Sun: 'Mathew is a brilliant dad and he and Celina love being parents. 'Celina's brother has a son who is a similar age and they loved spending time together. 'Mathew also kept the news quiet because he prefers to live his life out of the spotlight, even though he's a household name thanks to Gavin & Stacey. 'All his Gavin & Stacey co-stars know about him being a dad, including James Corden and Joanna Page'. The actor was first seen kissing the set designer during a night out in Wales two years earlier, while they were busy filming the last Gavin & Stacey Christmas special. Bassili, who graduated from University Of Arts London with a first class degree in set design, lists the Gavin & Stacey special on her online CV. With the kiss, he appeared to confirm his relationship was over with Casualty actress Evelyn Hoskins, who he proposed to in October. A spokesperson later told MailOnline: 'Mathew and Evelyn separated amicably in October 2018.'

Fred West documentaries and Fifty Shades of Grey? Scots prison chiefs REFUSE to ban X-rated films from cells despite plea from staff
Prison chiefs have shot down calls by frontline staff to ban some of Scotland's most hardened criminals from watching X-rated films and TV shows in their cells. The Prison Officers Association (POA) implored top brass to pull 18+ DVDs featuring extreme criminal activity, sex and drug use in the wake of an investigation by MailOnline. We revealed that amid an epidemic of violence behind bars, inmates at one of the country's toughest jails, HMP Barlinnie, are free to rent films about serial killers and sexual deviants – despite such X-rated films and videos being outlawed in English jails since 2013. The POA, which represents rank and file prison staff, said that with 'overcrowding, drug use, bullying and organised crime gang activities inside our prisons, the last thing we need is anything else adding to the tension or temperatures'. Yet the Scottish Prison Service last week said it would stand by its policy and refuse to review what films criminals can watch. Last night, Scottish Conservative justice spokesman Liam Kerr MSP said the failure to listen to concerns from staff was emblematic of the SNP 's soft-touch approach to justice. He said: 'This blatant refusal to review a policy that allows prisoners to watch inappropriate content will alarm law-abiding Scots. 'It sums up how the SNP's soft-touch attitude is embedded across all areas of Scotland's justice system and repeatedly panders to the needs of criminals. 'The POA want this to be reviewed and recognise many of these prisoners are behind bars for violent offences and should not have access to this content. 'Rather than passing the buck, SNP ministers should intervene and ensure the Scottish Prison Service rethinks this decision.' Earlier this month, MailOnline revealed a list of movies available to prisoners, obtained via freedom of information, include titles such as Saw, The Silence of the Lambs and American TV show Dexter, about a police forensic officer who kills criminals in his free time. Inmates can also watch TV shows about real-life child killers Fred and Rose West, Myra Hindley and Beverley Allitt, as well as highly sexualised content including Fifty Shades of Grey. Shockingly, US TV series Prison Break – about two brothers hatching a complex plan to break free from jail – is also available to watch. The revelations came after it was disclosed there have been more than 250 assaults on prison staff on average annually in the last decade. This year, the High Court in Edinburgh heard convicted murderer Robert Paterson plotted to have a guard at HMP Saughton 'seriously assaulted' with a handgun. In 2013, former UK Conservative Justice Minister Chris Grayling cracked down on the availability of such films and TV shows in prisons in England and Wales. Last week, the SPS was asked by Mr Kerr what action it was going to take in light of the approved Scottish list of films including titles seen to be inappropriate for a rehabilitative environment.
