DOE intensifies patrols, drone surveillance to fight open burning and haze
DOE director-general Datuk Wan Abdul Latiff Wan Jaffar said the department has been conducting patrols and enforcement operations to prevent open burning, which contributes to haze, especially during the current hot and dry spell.
"Since July 8, 2025, the delegation of authority to various enforcement agencies has come into effect. This strategic initiative is aimed at strengthening enforcement actions on the ground, particularly in addressing the issue of open burning, which contributes to haze situations.
"This delegation of authority allows swift, integrated and more comprehensive actions to be implemented quickly by the relevant agencies," he said in a statement yesterday.
As of July 21, 2025, the DOE had conducted 4,121 ground patrols and 640 drone surveillance operations. Enforcement actions included 58 directives, 27 court proceedings and 59 compounds issued against parties found to have committed open burning offences this year.
Wan Abdul Latiff said that for improved preparedness and coordination, the National Open Burning Action Plan and the National Haze Action Plan were activated on Feb 26 to streamline agency responses nationwide.
"In addition, joint patrols and monitoring efforts are also being conducted with strategic partner agencies such as the Civil Defence Force (CDF) and other enforcement agencies at the state and district levels," he said.
He urged the public not to engage in any form of open burning, particularly for agricultural purposes such as land clearing, waste disposal or use of abandoned land.
"Stern action will be taken against individuals or parties found to be in violation of Section 29A of the Environmental Quality Act 1974. Offenders convicted of open burning can be fined up to RM1 million or imprisoned for up to five years, or both.
"In addition, a compound of up to 50 per cent of the maximum fine may be imposed for each offence," he said.
"At the same time, all operators of industries such as quarries, palm oil mills, premix plants and other industrial sectors are required to ensure their air pollution control systems are functioning properly. Emissions from chimneys must be constantly monitored and controlled to prevent air pollution that could affect public health," he said.
He added that the DOE remained committed to enhancing monitoring and enforcement efforts, while collaborating with stakeholders to maintain national air quality standards.

KOTA KINABALU: A lorry owner was fined RM1,600 after being caught transporting 59 logs without a removal pass during an operation in Kampung Randagong, Ranau. The Sabah Forestry Department (JPS) and General Operations Force (GOP) detained the two lorries in a late-night operation last Wednesday (July 23). Sabah Forestry Department chief conservator Datuk Frederick Kugan confirmed the logs originated from Sipitang district, with royalty payments of RM4,732.70 already made to the state government. 'The commercial value of the logs is estimated at RM31,600. Following the offence, the licensee was fined RM1,600,' he said in a statement. Fire Department Defers To AGC Over Influencer Brothers' False Report Sentence
MARANG, July 29 (Bernama) -- The Fire and Rescue Department of Malaysia (JBPM) is leaving it to the Attorney General's Chambers (AGC) to assess the sentence handed down to motoring influencer Tengku Nizaruddin Tengku Zainudin and his brother, Tengku Abdul Aziz, for lodging a false police report. JBPM director-general Datuk Nor Hisham Mohamad said the department respects the court's decision to impose a one-month jail term and RM1,500 fine on the brothers, despite public criticism that the sentence was too lenient given the potential impact on public trust and safety. 'Some feel the punishment was too light, especially considering the damage to the credibility and safety risks posed by someone with influence. 'But we have to respect the authorities with greater legal standing on the matter,' he told reporters after the closing ceremony of National Firefighter Drill 2025 at the Eastern Region Fire and Rescue Academy parade ground in Wakaf Tapai today. Nor Hisham added that although JBPM has its own legislation, which could allow the department to act, the matter has been left entirely to the police as the primary enforcement authority. Yesterday, the AGC filed a notice of appeal against the Muar Magistrates' Court decision to sentence Tengku Nizaruddin and his younger brother, Tengku Abdul Aziz, to one month's jail and a RM1,500 fine for lodging a false report and providing false information to a public servant. In a separate development, Nor Hisham said JBPM Perak has been instructed to suspend a volunteer firefighter linked to a lewd video that recently went viral on social media. Although the individual involved is not a full-time firefighter, Nor Hisham said the incident has nonetheless tarnished the reputation of the department as a whole. 'It's deeply disappointing when someone from our ranks engages in such behaviour. Yesterday, I reminded all state JBPM directors to remain vigilant against any actions that could damage the department's image,' he said.
