Ole Miss' Michael La Sasso wins NCAA title, collects U.S. Open and Masters invites
Not only did La Sasso hold off Texas A&M's Phichaksn Maichon to win the NCAA's individual title with a 72-hole total of 11-under 277, he earned official invitations to next month's U.S. Open at Oakmont and next year's Masters. He also helped his team edge Florida State for the eighth and final spot in the match play competition that starts Tuesday to determine the NCAA team champion.
La Sasso became the second Ole Miss golfer to win the individual championship - joining 2017 medalist Braden Thornberry, who's currently on the PGA Tour.
"If you would have told me the first tournament of the year that I was going to win a national championship as an individual, I probably would have said you're lying," La Sasso told Golfweek.
La Sasso and the Rebels finished team stroke play at 11, which was one shot ahead of 2024 runner-up Florida State for the final match-play berth. Ole Miss opens match play against Arizona State, which won stroke play at 14 under.
No. 2 Auburn faces No. 7 Virginia , No. 3 Florida takes on No. 6 Texas and No. 4 Oklahoma State battles No. 5 Oklahoma in the other match-play quarterfinals. Auburn is the defending national champion.

Indian-American Akshay Bhatia comes close to third PGA Tour win as he shares lead at 3M Open
Akshay Bhatia shot a career-equalling 8-under 63 on the moving day to move in a share for the lead at the 3M Open on the PGA Tour. He shared the lead with Denmark's Thorbjorn Olesen who aced the par-3 eighth and shot a 4-under 67 at the TPC Twin Cities. Bhatia, a 23-year-old Indian-American, whose parents came from India, chipped in twice on way to 63, as he seeks his third PGA TOUR victory in his 90th start with his previous wins being the 2023 Barracuda Championship and the 2024 Valero Texas Open. His third round 8-under 63 matched his career-low score which he has shot five times. The last time Bhatia played the 3M Open, he was T-64 in 2024. Bhatia, No. 46 in the FedExCup, is attempting to go right up to the Tour Championship as he did in 2024. Bhatia said, "I chipped in twice, made a lot of putts. A lot of putts lipped in, which was really nice to see. All in all, just a pretty solid round. Felt like I did a pretty good job of playing out of the rough today. I didn't hit it particularly great off the tee, but thankfully greens are soft enough to where you can kind of do that.' Bhatia, who closed 2024 with a fourth place in World Challenge at Tiger Woods' tournament has also got three Top-10s in 2025 including Tied-third at the Players. He chipped in from 42 feet for birdie on the fifth and from 55 feet for another birdie on 11. 'I'm just trying to play solid golf and hopefully the cards fall my way tomorrow," said Bhatia. Tied for first with Bhatia is Denmark's Thorbjorn Olesen seeking his first PGA Tour win, is making his 3M Open debut, holds 54-hole lead/co-lead for the first time on the PGA Tour. He entered the week No. 129 in the FedExCup and the eight-time DP World Tour winner earned PGA Tour membership for the 2025 season after finishing No. 7 in the 2024 DP World Tour Top 10, which awards Tour membership to the top 10 finishers in the final Race to Dubai Rankings, not otherwise exempt. The 2023 Arnold Palmer Invitational presented by Mastercard winner, Kurt Kitayama recorded a career-low 11-under 60 and T-3 at 17-under. Kitayama also matched the tournament and course record with a 60. Also tied third is Takumi Kanaya (65) and seeks to become the sixth player from Japan to win on Tour and second this season after Hideki Matsuyama, who won The Sentry title. Also in a tie for third are Sam Stevens (66) and Jake Knapp (67). Lying in a three-way tie for seventh are Chris Gotterup (65), Pierceson Coody (67) and Jesper Svensson (63) at 16-under.

Davidovich Fokina beats Shelton to reach the DC Open final vs. de Minaur
Last Updated: Washington, Jul 27 (AP) Alejandro Davidovich Fokina broke big-serving Ben Shelton a half-dozen times and eliminated the No. 4 seed by a 6-2, 7-5 score in the D.C. Open semifinals to follow up his upset of No. 1 seed Taylor Fritz a night earlier. The 12th-seeded Davidovich Fokina, a 26-year-old from Spain, will face No. 7 seed Alex de Minaur on Sunday for the title at the hard-court tournament. De Minaur advanced to his second Washington final by beating Corentin Moutet 6-4, 6-3. Davidovich Fokina will be seeking his first ATP trophy in his fourth career final. No matter the outcome, he has guaranteed himself a debut in the top 20 of the rankings after arriving in D.C. at No. 26. The semifinal win was de Minaur's 20th victory on a hard court in 2025, the most on the ATP tour. The Australian, who is 13th in the rankings, moved into his 19th career final; he's 9-9 so far. One of the runner-up finishes came against Alexander Zverev at Washington in 2018. In the women's bracket, Leylah Fernandez will be trying to win her first WTA title of the season, and Anna Kalinskaya will seek the first of her career when they meet each other Sunday. Fernandez, the runner-up at the 2021 U.S. Open, hit 12 aces and picked up her second victory of the week against a top-20 opponent by beating 2022 Wimbledon champion Elena Rybakina 6-7 (2), 7-6 (3), 7-6 (3) across 3 hours, 16 minutes in the semifinals. Kalinskaya needed less than half as much time to eliminate Emma Raducanu 6-4, 6-3 with the help of 14 backhand winners in the other women's semifinal. It was Raducanu who defeated Fernandez for the championship at Flushing Meadows four years ago. Both women's finalists are unseeded. Canada's Fernandez, who is 22 years old, is ranked 36th; Russia's Kalinskaya, 26, is ranked 48th. Kalinskaya moved into her third tour-level final. She went 0-2 in title matches last season. Fernandez, who got past top-seeded Jessica Pegula earlier in the week, owns three titles. Sunday's matchup will be her seventh career final.
