Park Bo-gum, Kim So-hyun and Lee Sang-yi on training to be athletes

The Hindu18-06-2025
Early on in the ongoing Korean police procedural show Good Boy, actor Park Bo-gum is cornered by a group of thugs, each looking more threatening than the other. There is however no fear here; With a manic glint in his eye, he snaps on a pair of boxing gloves, has his mouth guard in place, and grins at them, almost encouragingly. If the look of exhilaration is anything to go by, you know that he has been waiting for this.
To say that Bo-gum is probably having the best year would be an understatement. After amassing legions of new fans globally and reminding the loyalists of his onscreen charm as the endearing Gwan-sik in 2025's hit Netflix show When Life Gives You Tangerines, he bursts onto the scene in Good Boy as a brash, impulsive and large-hearted former star athlete who is struggling to find his footing in the police force. Bo-gum here, is joined by an impressive ensemble cast: Lee Sang-yi, Kim So-hyun, Heo Sung-Tae, and Tae Won-seok, all former athletes who, like him, are grudgingly adapting to their new lives as a ragtag team of police officers in a special unit.
'I was so happy I met these good people and was grateful to be shooting with them,' says Bo-gum, speaking to The Hindu in a roundtable interaction, where he was joined by Sang-yi and So-hyun.
There is something truly special about seeing an ensemble cast come together onscreen. If the big moments onscreen are exciting (think 'Avengers Assemble'), you can't help but wonder about the chemistry offscreen. Stars, are they just like us? Do they hang out after work?
'We always tried to eat together between shoots and we would talk about what happened during the shoot, ad lib, and take pictures of each other,' laughs Sang-yi. For So-hyun, she recalls a warm and friendly atmosphere on set. 'We all had similar senses of humor, and everyone laughed a lot,' she says.
Having filmed for the show over ten to eleven months, all the actors had to intensely train in the sports their characters are champions in.
As a former boxing gold medalist in Good Boy, Bo-gum trained for over six months, often working out with his fellow actor Sang-yi to build up his stamina for a role that promised to be both physically and mentally challenging. 'I learnt boxing to accurately portray and embody this role,' he says. So-hyun, meanwhile, worked on embodying the calm and precise persona of Ji Han-na, a former champion shooter. 'I want to show a more rough and tough side of her when she shoots, and also try my best to make the gun-related action scenes look natural and energetic for the audience,' she explains.
A former fencing champion, Good Boy's many action sequences see Sang-yi charge into the chaos wielding a police baton like a sword. 'I have been learning fencing for over six months now and I practice consistently everyday. Using a baton instead of a fencing sword to subdue criminals meant that I had to separately train on baton techniques with the action team as well,' he explains.
As former high-achieving athletes who have stepped away from the limelight and currently face workplace discrimination and scrutiny, the protagonists of Good Boy are all layered, smartly-written characters who do more than just pack a punch. So-hyun, for instance, says that while Ha-na might look calm and quiet, she has a passionate heart and makes bold choices. This is evident when Ha-na calmly responds to a home invasion and picks up a paintball gun and shoots at a group of thugs, a scene that proves to be a superbly choreographed introduction to what she is capable of.
'I felt a lot of anxiety as to whether I could pull this scene off, but I think we managed to capture this tension on set and incorporate it into the scene. I had to put in a lot of effort and I believe this came through in the scene,' she says.
Directed by Shim Na-yeon, who previously helmed critically acclaimed K-Dramas Beyond Evil and TheGood Bad Mother, Good Boy has been seeing a steady stream of viewers and has been garnering praise for its slick action sequences and ability to balance both the sober and the slapstick. As the lead, this has also been something entirely new for Park Bo-gum, who has played a range of characters through his K-Drama appearances so far.
'I tend to talk a lot with the director and writer to build and develop the character together,' says Bo-gum, when asked how he approaches a role. 'I also try to talk a lot with the other actors and through the atmosphere on set I gain a deeper understanding and empathy for the characters.'
Good Boy is now streaming on Prime Video

10 money lessons from films and documentaries you shouldn't miss this weekend

Just when you thought that you knew how to make your money work for you, and make your company grow, you come across this jaw-dropping docu-series called The China Hustle which has been uploaded thankfully on YouTube. Paper companies that make a 150% profit, SEC violations, banks complicit in the paper trail, and a mind boggling business philosophy: Muddy Waters Makes Easy To Catch Fish. If you're still grinning from the latest episode of South Park, and wish for sanity and insights into how people look at their work life, then Barack Obama's voice will make you realise that you too have colleagues and employees who are affected by the decisions you make. Corporations may make decisions based on their political leanings, but how these decisions affect people and what makes a good job good is shown in the four episode show you will find on Netflix. The day I watched cricketing greats confess in tears, the game just stopped holding meaning. This series offers a new perspective on the cricketing scandal that still affects legions of fans who still take every win and every loss personally. You'll be sighing into your tea when you hear journalists and CBI officers who investigated one of the biggest scandals in India. Cricketing greats who fell from grace because of their love for all the toys money could buy… Watch it on Netflix. Imagine owning private planes, hangars and an air strip that's just lying there unused, because the economy has eroded everything. Looks like it will be easier to find gold than jobs. This series follows this seemingly, mind-blowingly crazy scheme that could have a huge payback if they are successful. In a world where people are being encouraged to think outside the box, is this gamble worth it? Watch this series on Netflix. The book by Parinda Joshi held more promise about jugaad than the film delivered. And yet this film (with all its draggy middle parts) serves as a reminder that you need to understand the business you are getting into before you serve Tiger Soup to unsuspecting folk. Chinese aphrodisiacs claim much, and Chinese herbal remedies promise the moon as do our Indian Ayurvedic concoctions. But when a young businessman who deals in mattresses chooses to expand his business into China, he comes back home with something that promises him money but… Watch this 2019 film on Netflix. (And if you're not too happy with the film, switch to watching Swades where Shah Rukh Khan realises what it means to leave a well paying job to come home to finding solutions to a different kind of challenge) How many times have you sat after a party with your friends and schemed to take over the world? Or discussed scams that rocked the stock market and professed that you would never get caught? This French documentary is one and a half hour long, and you will be shaking your heads in collective amazement at how simple the scam is and how easy it is to swindle people out of their money. It's a treat to watch on Netflix. Johnnie To takes us into this thrilling yet scary world of bank securities in this film. What desperation drives people into taking risks? A cop and a bank teller get ensnared in the world filled with people who will go to any length to get themselves out of the economic crisis. This thriller is a good watch and will make you hungrier for the local Chinese takeaway… I am so sure you know someone who took a trip to Mauritius or Barbados to move their money… This star studded Soderberg film will have you grinning when you realise that it takes a widow (Meryl Streep is so amazing!) to unearth an insurance scam… Gary Oldman, Antonio Banderas, Sharon Stone, David Schwimmer, and more stars than you can count! This film is worth all your money hidden away in mattresses… You've seen Farzi on Prime Video, now watch this film that takes you into the life of a man who is just a bricklayer by day and an anarchist at night. What lengths will you go in order to avenge the slights you suffered when you stood in long lines to convert your hard earned money into new currency when demonitisation happened? Farzi made me root for the bad things they did, but it offered a salve for the unchanged 1500 rupees I still have. Watch this film on Netflix. Many have read the book by Professor and Former US Secretary of Labor Robert Reich. This documentary on Netflix follows him as he explains to us how people are angry, how dissatisfied they are with decisions taken by the governments, the inaction and the great divide between the haves and the have nots. You'd think it will be dry and dull, and that you should watch documentaries like How to Make a Billion, or The Warren Buffet Story instead. But watch how the professor analyses our money habits. Illuminating! This listicle should persuade you to step inside the world of Bitcoins and Crypto Currencies as well… But we are still mad at our banks for making us stand out in the Sun while the big fish got away…No, not asking you to watch Breaking bad or Money Heist. But my favourite: Hell or High Water.
