'Captain should've directly told Ravindra Jadeja...': Greg Chappell blames Shubman Gill for Lord's defeat

Shubman Gill
Australian cricketer Greg Chappell praised Ravindra Jadeja's efforts in handling the pressure but felt he should have been more proactive while batting with the tail. Although this criticism has often been directed at Jadeja despite his strong performance, Chappell's viewpoint stands out as he equally blamed captain Shubman Gill for failing to guide Jadeja's strategy during that crucial phase.
Although Jadeja did a good job of shielding Mohammed Siraj and Jasprit Bumrah, Chappell pointed out that if India were to win the game, he needed to go for boundaries. He pointed out that merely taking a single each over wouldn't have been enough, especially with minimal contribution from the other end.
'The Lord's Test also provided a telling moment with the way Jadeja was managed late in the match. Left with the tail, Jadeja did what many specialist batters do in that situation: he shielded the tail, farmed the strike, and played conservatively. On the surface, it was a disciplined innings. But was it the right one?' asked Chappell in his column for ESPNCricinfo.
Chappel cites Ben Stokes 2019 knock as example for India
The former India head coach said that Gill should have clearly instructed Jadeja to go for the win while the tailenders were still at the crease.
'The truth is, Jadeja was the only recognised batter left. If India were to chase down the target, he had to take calculated risks. His job wasn't to leave balls and collect singles – it was to win the match. That clarity should have come from the dressing room, from the captain. He needed to be told directly: 'You are the man who has to get this done. The tail's job is to hang in there with you, but you must go for the win.
'We saw exactly that from England's Ben Stokes against Australia in Leeds in 2019. In a similar situation, he backed himself and produced one of the best innings of the past 50 years. Importantly, Stokes played that innings knowing that, succeed or fail, his team and leadership would have his back. That's the mindset that needs to be fostered in any great team,' Chappell added.
Ravindra Jadeja batted for a duration of 3 hrs along with Jasprit Bumrah and Mohammed Siraj and added 35 abd 23 runs respectively, but it was not enough to win the match. India lost the match by 22 runs.
Chappell points finger on Shubman Gill's captaincy
Chappell pointed finger on Shubman Gill and said,'And this is where Gill's leadership challenge becomes very real. He must start setting those expectations – clearly, proactively, and consistently. Gill must define what sort of team he wants India to be. The captain sets the tone – not just with words, but with actions, clarity of purpose, and visible standards,' he added.
Chappell highlighted on Gill's captaincy and said that Gill needs to quickly acquire the communication skills that great captains possess. Whether in the dressing room, on the field, or during training, he emphasized the importance of calm, effective communication. Gill can't lead the team with his batting alone, Chappell says; he needs to develop his communication skills to bring the players together, give them confidence, and gain their trust.

Nitish Kumar Reddy ruled out of India vs England Tests; all-rounder injures his knee, scans show severe ligament damage

Nitish Kumar Reddy's trip to the UK is all set to come to a premature end as he has been ruled out of the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy against England after suffering a knee injury in Manchester. Sources privy to developments confirmed to Hindustan Times that the young all-rounder suffered the injury while training in the gym on Sunday. He then underwent scans, which revealed significant ligament damage. Beckenham: India's Nitish Kumar Reddy during a training session ahead of the fourth Test cricket match between India and England, at The County Ground(PTI) "Yes, Nitish Kumar Reddy has suffered an injury setback. At this stage, it really looks unlikely that he would be available for the last two Tests in Manchester and Oval," the source said. Nitish Kumar Reddy also wasn't a part of the Indian contingent that interacted with Manchester United players and staff on Sunday. This development now gives a major setback to the visitors' preparation, who are currently trailing 1-2 in the five-match series; the side is already concerned about Arshdeep Singh and Akash Deep's injury scare. Both pacers are all but set to miss the Manchester Test, beginning July 23. The team management has already called Haryana pacer Anshul Kamboj as backup, and he will join the squad later today. Speaking of Nitish Kumar Reddy, he did not start the series for India in Headingley as Shardul Thakur was preferred ahead of him. However, the management brought him in for the next Test in Edgbaston, which India won by 336 runs. Reddy wasn't particularly impactful in the second Test, scoring only 2 runs and failing to take a wicket in six overs. In the Lord's Test, however, the all-rounder stepped up with the ball as he dismissed England openers Ben Duckett and Zak Crawley in the very same over in the first innings. He also dismissed Crawley in the second innings. With the bat in hand, he played gritty knocks in both innings. However, he lost his wicket at a crucial juncture on both occasions, with India losing the contest by 22 runs. Will Shardul Thakur replace Nitish Reddy? India preferred to have one fast-bowling all-rounder in all three Tests of the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy. With Nitish Kumar Reddy ruled out of the series, Shardul has a realistic chance of making it to the playing XI. Shardul was underutilised with the ball in hand in the first Test, bowling less than 20 overs in the entire Test. However, he scalped two wickets in the second innings, but his effort wasn't enough as England chased down more than 370 runs. With the bat, he had underwhelming returns, which was a key reason behind Reddy replacing him in the playing XI.

India Star Out Of England Tour As Injury Troubles Continue To Mount For Team Ahead Of Manchester Test: Sources

India all-rounder Nitish Kumar Reddy is set to be ruled for the remainder of the ongoing England tour. This comes as another blow for Team India ahead of the Manchester Test, starting July 23, with pacers Arshdeep Singh and Akash Deep also doubtful for the game at Old Trafford having picked up injuries while training. Sources have told NDTV that Reddy has been ruled out for the remaining matches as he has suffered a knee injury while training at the gym, with scans later revealing a ligament tear. So far, Reddy has played played two matches after missing out the opener in Leeds. His performances have been far from impressive. In the second Test at Edbaston, he scored a solitary run in both the innings and also failed to pick up a wicket. In the third Test at Lord's, with Reddy managed 43 runs across both the innings and picked up three wickets. The sources also confirmed that Reddy skipped the nets on Sunday, alongside Shubman Gill, Rishabh Pant, KL Rahul, Jasprit Bumrah and Washington Sundar. On Sunday, the Indian players and head coach Gautam Gambhir met with the Manchester United players at the Red Devils' training facility. During the meet-up, Team India vice-captain and wicketkeeper-batter Rishabh Pant gifted a signed bat to Manchester United football team captain Bruno Fernandes. India's right-arm seamer Mohammed Siraj was also bowling to a Manchester United defender, Harry Maguire. However, Reddy was nowhere to be spotted. Anshul Kamboj has been added to the squad as an injury replacement and was spotted with the rest of the Indian team as they met Fernandes and co. Recapping the Lord's Test of the ongoing series, an unfortunate dismissal of Mohammed Siraj at the hands of Shoaib Bashir, with the ball rolling back into the stumps after a landing on the pitch, marked the end of India's stubborn resistance at Lord's, with Ravindra Jadeja left stranded following a heartbreaking 22-run loss. India lost the match despite dominating England for large parts of the game, with Jasprit Bumrah being one of the standout performers. He took seven wickets, including a five-wicket haul in the first innings.

5 Players Who're Out/Doubtful For 4th India-England Test In Manchester

The fourth Test of the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy will be played at Old Trafford in Manchester from July 23 to 25. The fourth Test of the ongoing five-match series between India and England will be played at Old Trafford in Manchester from July 23 to 27. In the build-up to the match, which is expected to be an edge-of-the-seat thriller like the last one, the Indian team is dealing with injury-related issues for at least four players, while the English team also has a couple of fitness-related concerns. While the match is still three sleeps away, it remains to be seen how the situation unfolds in the next 60 hours. Shoaib Bashir: England spinner Shoaib Bashir suffered a finger injury on his non-bowling hand on Day 3 of the third India-England Test at Lord's, because of which he was ruled out of the last two matches. In his absence, Liam Dawson was added to England's 14-member squad, and the 35-year-old is in contention to play his first Test for England since July 2017. Arshdeep Singh: Left-arm pacer Arshdeep Singh, in all likelihood, will miss the fourth Test in Manchester. The 26-year-old cricketer, who is yet to make his Test debut for India, hurt his bowling hand in his follow-through during a training session in Beckenham on Thursday. As per the available information, he has a deep cut and has stitches on his bowling hand. Rishabh Pant: Rishabh Pant is India's first-choice wicketkeeper-batter in Test cricket. The left-handed batter suffered a finger injury on Day 1 of the Lord's Test, and he didn't keep the wickets after 34 overs in the first innings. There is no official update about his recovery from the finger injury, and there are high chances of him not playing the fourth Test as wicketkeeper. Nitish Kumar Reddy: India suffered a big setback on Sunday evening when it was reported that 22-year-old all-rounder Nitish Reddy will miss the last two matches of the series due to a knee injury that he suffered while training in the gym on Sunday, with scans revealing ligament damage. view comments Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's.
