They look like a picture-perfect American family posing for a Christmas card. But the final photo is for an obituary
People who might have seen Salym Liufau, her husband, David, and four children posing for professional photographs in a leafy park likely thought they were just another family having pictures taken for their Christmas card. After all, how could they have known the deeper significance of the occasion? At the end of the 45-minute shoot in November 2024, Liufau took the photographer aside and gently requested a portrait of her alone.

Mrs Brown's Boys loses 8,500,000 viewers as fans complain 'it's got even worse'
Mrs Brown's Boys is somehow back for another season, but its viewership has dropped off a cliff amid growing calls to axe the show. The BBC comedy returned on Friday night after a two-year break and a widely-panned Christmas special to a viewership of 1,500,000 fans. This is a whopping 8.5million down from Mrs Brown's Boys' heyday and a far cry from its once lofty title of 'best British sitcom' less than a decade ago. While overnight ratings are criticised for not showing the full picture in the age of streaming, they do highlight just how far the once-popular comedy has fallen. Launching in 2011, the series follows the life of the interfering Agnes Brown (played by writer and creator Brendan O'Carroll) and her family. It's proven one of the most divisive shows of all time, with this series cementing viewers' opinions that the 'axe looms'. SuperTV shared on X that the show 'returned last night with just 1.5 million viewers, the lowest audience it has ever recorded.' The ratings elicited the expected reactions from those who are less than enthusiastic about revisiting Mammy's world. 'Mrs Brown come collect ya tings from BBC Studios then,' joked floellaumbagabe as iJordan said: 'Nature is healing'. '8.5 million people have clearly had a word with themselves,' wrote johnoconnell6, while pheebs_18 asked: 'Time for this show to finally end? 😭' SamFarmer2 added: 'Because people are fed up with it and fed up with the recycled jokes.' SkylarSkye14 declared it the 'worst show of all time' as they watched on Friday night, amid others begging to 'make it stop'. '1.5 million lunatics still chose to put themselves through it tho. Madness,' mikepriestley13 pointed out. Defending Mrs Brown's Boys, ScottTHFC23 wrote: 'Still a very good number without including catch-up and iplayer people.' It's true that viewing habits have changed, with fewer people watching TV as it airs and more opting for the flexibility of on-demand viewing. At the peak of Mrs Brown's Boys' popularity — their third season in 2012 — it brought in over 9million viewers every episode. That year saw 10.72million people tune in for the Christmas Eve episode, with a whopping 11.69million returning the next day for the second part. After four years, this festive figure had dropped slightly to 8.98million but remained steady with the show voted as the best British sitcom of the 21st century. In response to this, O'Carroll said: 'It vindicates the fans' belief in the show. They have kept us on the air – it certainly wasn't the reviewers. 'There is an audience out there that comedy forgot – that Are You Being Served? audience has been left behind. Us winning this award proves that.' Mrs Brown's Boys has never received good reviews, but the show is struggling to compete a decade on, despite once being voted as better than The Office or Gavin and Stacey. Last year's Christmas episode pulled in a measly 2.2million viewers, while Gavin and Stacey's return yielded 10million more viewers. Behind the scenes, there has been controversy too, as rehearsals for the festive episode were halted temporarily after O'Carroll 'implied' a racial slur. More Trending After the BBC investigated the incident, he apologised for his 'clumsy attempt at a joke', which he said had 'backfired and caused offence'. He was accused of starting to utter the N-word before he was stopped by a co-star. Metro once wrote that the BBC should 'hang its head in shame' for broadcasting Mrs Brown's Boys. Could this season finally be the nail in the coffin? Mrs Brown's Boys is available to watch now on BBC iPlayer and airs Fridays at 9.30pm on BBC One. Got a story? Inside abandoned UK hotel where beds are still made after nightmare fire
The Reading Lake Hotel, in Pingewood, was once a peaceful establishment, praised for its hospitality and tranquil lakeside views. Now it lies abandoned, with its empty corridors filled with eerie reminders of its heyday Not so long ago, the Reading Lake Hotel, in Pingewood, was a place filled with life and celebrations. Guests would gather to mark wedding anniversaries, dance at Christmas parties, and enjoy the tranquil lakeside views and spa facilities. Nowadays, however, it's an eerie shell of its former self, barely recognisable after a ferocious fire ripped the building apart ten years ago. It's believed the blaze, which took hold on November 21, 2015, began in a boiler room before spreading rapidly through the upper-floor rooms into the roof. The Reading Chronicle reports that it took 10 fire engines filled with 55 firefighters two hours to extinguish the monster inferno. Thankfully, there were no fatalities or injuries amongst staff or guests following an incident that must have been terrifying to behold. It comes after news that an abandoned UK Butlin's site is now seaside town's 'hell hole' hotel. READ MORE: Brit mum's 'horrendous' death after being scratched by puppy with rabies on holiday But sadly, the badly damaged hotel never returned to its glory days and ended up closing its doors for good. The only visitors now are urban explorers, who've previously shared creepy footage of the hotel's now silent corridors, As seen in a video shared via the YouTube channel Neo Adventures, there are still reminders that this drab and filthy building once offered a warm welcome to visiting guests. A working fridge is still plugged in, containing items of food. In one cupboard, the explorers came across some long-disused computers, while brass signs directed people to their rooms. Some of the rooms look almost ready to welcome guests once more, with mattresses still on the beds, and comfy-looking love seats positioned against the walls. On some, bedding is still visible. In another cupboard, a number of lamps have been placed on the floor in total darkness, waiting to be lit. Right next to the restaurant, which is still atmospherically lit, the now gloomy kitchen is still filled with appliances for breakfasts that will never be served, from coffee machines to huge cooking pans and bottles of oil. As detailed in a recent article in The Reading Chronicle, it appears unlikely that the hotel will be opening its doors anytime soon, with no new plans site listed on West Berkshire Council's planning portal, Pingewood's planning authority. This is despite rooms still being advertised on Expedia, in what appears to be a puzzling error. The publication also reached out to the Millennium Hotels group for comment, but received no response. It's understood that the hotel didn't immediately close after the blaze and was functioning as recently as 2018. Sadly, the visitor experience would have been drastically reduced by this point, with parts of the fire-damaged establishment already closed off to the public. One guest who stayed in 2018 left a review on Expedia: "Unfortunately, I have experienced this hotel at its best. The staff were nice, and my room was upgraded to a suite, which was a lovely touch considering I stayed with my two children. "The hotel is tired, there were lightbulbs out in the room, wallpaper peeling, and framework missing from the doors. The shower was yellowing, and when used, sprayed from cracks behind the shower head. When on the balcony, you can see the other half of the hotel, which is closed off and unused."
