Marvel Cosmic Invasion has some surprising Marvel vs. Capcom DNA

How do you make a retro beat-em-up feel new? That's a question that the team at Dotemu has had to ask itself a lot in the past five years. The studio has found tremendous success ushering in a new age of throwback brawlers, from Streets of Rage 4 to Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Shredder's Revenge. Its efforts are only doubling, as it is currently juggling three 2D projects between multiple development studios. Each one has to find a way to do something a little new in a genre that doesn't feel like it can flex too much more.
And yet, Marvel Cosmic Invasion still finds a way. At this year's Summer Game Fest, I tried the latest project from Streets of Rage 4 developer Tribute Games. While it's another classic brawler filled with nostalgic pixel art and a wide roster of superheroes, it infuses that tried and true formula with just enough fighting game DNA to keep it distinct.
The most important moment of my demo came when I was asked to choose not just one, but two characters. I had access to a handful of Cosmic Invasion's final roster, but I decided to go with Venom and Wolverine. That choice was the first sign that the project is doing things a little differently as I initially didn't know why I had to pick a duo rather than one hero.

That became clear the moment I started playing and Cosmic Invasion's one big trick revealed itself. It pays homage to the likes of Marvel vs. Capcom as much as any arcade beat-em-up thanks to its tag system. At any point, I can hold down a button to swap between my two characters. Naturally, that means I have more options when knocking goons out. In one run, I played with a Storm/Captain America combo. While I could use Storm to take enemies out at close range, I could switch to Cap and toss his shield across the screen to thwack far off enemies and block projectiles. There's some synergy potential there that makes good use of the game's large roster.
That's not all. By simply pressing the tag button rather than holding it, I can call in my second hero to deliver a quick attack. If I'm playing well, I can do that while I'm juggling an enemy to extend my combo even more. It's a seamless system that calls Mortal Kombat 1 and its Kameos to mind. It will feel natural to fighting game players and I can say that with certainty. Hours before trying Cosmic Invasion, I went hands-on with Invincible Vs, which features a nearly identical tag system. I got the hang of calling on a friend to extend my damage by the end of my session. As soon as I picked up Cosmic Invasion, I was able to transfer that skill instantly. The developers on hand seemed a little shocked by how fast I picked it up, but the muscle memory had been built up hours before.
That little trick helps create more dynamic action that naturally slots into Dotemu's typically fine-tuned brawler formula. During my demo, my co-op partner and I were able to juggle our enemies for comically long amounts of time. He'd keep punching them up into the air with Cap while I used Venom's wrecking ball move to smack them back and forth in midair and called on Wolverine to add insult to injury. It was a delight, even if that level of trolling isn't becoming of a superhero (okay, Venom absolutely would do that, though).
With a planned runtime similar to that of Shredder's Revenge, Marvel Cosmic Invasion should keep things tight as a one or two sitting game that encourages players to experiment with new combos each time. I'm ready to see how much more chaos I can inflict with a full team of friends controlling eight heroes at once.

Making movies is all about compromises. This actor is unavailable, so you cast someone else. That location is too expensive, so let's build a set. This shot is impossible, so let's think of something better. At every step, the big, huge mechanism of filmmaking is always a work in progress. But on Project Hail Mary, directors Chris Miller and Phil Lord tried to embrace a new philosophy. 'What's great about this movie is there are so many things that make it harder to make,' Miller said in Hall H at San Diego Comic-Con. 'All of the zero G, all of the centrifugal gravity, the characters have to have a wall between them because their atmospheres are different. Everything that a regular movie would be like, 'Oh, we can change that,' we were like, 'Anything that makes it harder we're not going to change.' We're going to stay true to it, and then that difficulty is what makes it interesting and makes it special.' His co-director, Phil Lord, put it another way. 'We kept saying, with respect, this movie is not a Mac, it's a PC,' he said, to much laughter. 'The movie is a machine, the ship is a machine; it can be beautiful, it just can't be pretty.' It is true that almost everything about Project Hail Mary makes it seem incredibly difficult to make. Most of the movie is set on a spaceship. That spaceship meets an alien race represented by a creature made out of stone that doesn't speak English. Changing the setting or the character could've still conveyed the overall idea of the story, but it wouldn't be the story author Andy Weir wrote in his novel. So everything had to be right. So how did Lord and Miller bring that rock creature, nicknamed Rocky, to life? 'We called our friend Neil Scanlan at the Lucasfilm creature shop, and we tackled it together,' Miller said. 'We built a practical creature that was puppeteered by an amazing puppeteer named James Ortiz and a team of five, which we called the Rocketeers, and it was amazing having Rocky there on set every day so that we could have a real interaction and shoot the whole thing practically. Ultimately, it's going to end up being a beautiful blend of creature puppetry and animation, and he comes alive in a way that you would die for this character.' Sounds like it's beautiful, but maybe not pretty, just like a PC. Project Hail Mary, starring Ryan Gosling, opens in theaters on March 20. Want more io9 news? What to expect from next month's PlayStation Plus lineup. August is almost upon us, and with it a brand new lineup of free PlayStation Plus Essential games just in time for back-to-school, which rolls out over the next few weeks depending on where you live and how unlucky you (or your kids) might be. What should gamers expect this coming month? July is almost over and it's time to make some predictions. This also means you have about a week or so to claim July's rather excellent lineup of PS Plus Essential titles. Don't sleep on these, as they include a fantastic fighting game, one of the best modern action-RPGs out there and a super unique indie title about exploring a mysterious apocalyptic wasteland. Last year's August lineup was pretty fascinating. It included the amazing Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga, Five Nights at Freddy's Security Breach and the 2D action-RPG Ender Lilies: Quietus of the Knights. Read on for more information on next month's PS Plus lineup. You don't need it for streaming movies or TV shows on Netflix and other services, or for free-to-play games like Warzone or Fortnite. Any paid online games, however, require a subscription. There are three PS Plus tiers—Essential, Extra and Premium—though for the purposes of this post we're only discussing the Essential tier's free monthly games. These tiers cost: PS Plus Essential — $79.99/year; PS Plus Extra — $134.99/year; PS Plus Premium — $159.99/year. Sony typically reveals the following month's games on the last Wednesday of the month, though this isn't always the case. The actual rule of thumb is that the new lineup (almost) always releases on the first Tuesday of the month and the games are revealed the previous Wednesday. This means, we should get our big August 2025 reveal on Wednesday, July 30th. August's Essentials lineup will go live on Tuesday, August 5th. You'll have until then to download July's free PS Plus games. It's interesting to look back on previous August PS Plus releases as we try to predict this coming month's games. Remarkably, the smash hit Fall Guys released on Playstation Plus a whopping five years ago in 2020, during the start of the COVID-19 pandemic. That same year, we got the remastered campaign of Call Of Duty: Modern Warfare. A couple years later we got the remake of Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 1+2, which is interesting since 3+4 just released. We don't have any big leaks to help guide us for August 2025. The only game releasing on PlayStation (and other platforms) on August 5th is Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba — The Hinokami Chronicles 2, an anime-based fighting game and sequel to the 2022 game of the same name. This is a possible PS Plus release but I remain doubtful. Here are some possible PS Plus predictions for August: Resident Evil 4 Remake — The remake of the popular action-horror game from 2005 was released in 2023 to wide acclaim. It's old enough to be a contender for a PS Plus release and would definitely be a crowd-pleaser. Elden Ring — FromSoftware's mega-hit action-RPG would be a huge win for Sony and PlayStation Plus gamers. Even Demon's Souls Remake would be a massive win, though I put both of these in the 'wishful thinking' column. Still, Elden Ring might make sense given the recent release of the standalone multiplayer spinoff Nightreign. Star Wars Outlaws — Ubisoft's open-world Star Wars game wasn't the hit they needed, but it's still a pretty fun way to head to a galaxy far, far away and rub shoulders with scum and villainy. It would make a really perfect PS Plus release. Death Stranding — Hideo Kojima's weirdest game was a big enough hit to commission a sequel and that sequel just came out. There's really no better time to release Death Stranding on PS+ than right now (though maybe a month or two ago would have been more ideal). Topspin 2k25 — The tennis sports game from 2024 would be in keeping with many other PS Plus months where Sony adds a baseball or tennis or golfing game to the mix. Other possible sports games for August: NHL 25, FC 25. Street Fighter 6 — The popular fighting game franchise continues to be a crowd-pleaser, and releasing this 2023 game on PS Plus would be fun despite getting a fighting game last month. That makes me doubtful we'll see this one, but I'd play it if Sony put it out there. Cocoon — Indie developer Jeppe Carlsen (Limbo, Inside) released this innovative and unique puzzle game back in 2023 to stellar reviews. It's been on the wishlist of various PS Plus guessers for a long time now and would certainly be the exact sort of small title that would make gamers happy in August. Trine 5 — I used to absolutely love the Trine games. I remember playing them with my kids when they were little. The gorgeous artwork in those games plus the couch co-op just made them such a delight. Then I forgot about them, and I actually never did play the fifth game. I'd love to, though. Scott says he'd love to see if "there were any scandals" with this fan-favorite character, "or if he was able to keep his powder dry." Everyone else is doing it, so why can't Parks and Recreation have a reboot? While various members of the Parks cast and crew have expressed their interest in a reboot, revival, or some kind of return to the beloved fictional town of Pawnee, Ind., no formal plans have yet materialized. But the powers that be likely haven't heard star Adam Scott's bright idea. Scott sits down with Entertainment Weekly Editorial Director Gerrad Hall on this week's episode of EW's Awardist podcast to discuss his freshly Emmy-nominated performance in the Apple TV+ thriller series Severance. Noting that The Office, the mockumentary series that informally spawned Parks, is getting its own spinoff called The Paper, Hall asks Scott, "Of the Parks and Rec characters, is there one specifically you would love to catch up with now, see where they're working, find out what they're doing?" Scott responds without hesitation, and his pick might surprise loyal Parks fans. "Probably Jerry [Jim O'Heir]," Scott replies. "I think because when we left the show, he was mayor, still, of Pawnee. I'd like to see how that worked out, if there were any scandals or if he was able to keep his powder dry and run the town in the way we know it should be run." Indeed, when Parks and Rec wrapped up its seventh and final season in 2015, viewers didn't have to guess where all their favorite characters would end up. The series informed them — Six Feet Under style, but without all the doom and gloom — by flashing into the future and offering closure for each beloved alum of the Pawnee Parks Department. O'Heir's Garry Gergich, mean-spiritedly referred to as "Jerry" throughout most of the series, is Parks' perpetual underdog — overlooked, undervalued, and even mocked for his enduringly sunny outlook. Which is what makes the great fortune bestowed upon him by the Parks finale so sweet. The character is elected mayor of Pawnee in a write-in campaign coup, a position he happily holds until his 100th birthday. "I don't know how my life could get any better than this," he tells Amy Poehler's Leslie Knope in one of their final scenes together. "I feel like Jerry would've done a terrific job," Scott continues, and adds one more idea to boot. "I think also Tom would be a good one to check in with, find out what's going on with Tom, with [Aziz Ansari's] character," he says. Similarly to Garry/Jerry, Ansari's Tom Haverford finds a happy ending in the Parks finale, though one that doesn't come without its hitches, meaning it could make for great spinoff fodder. , On the finale episode "One Last Ride," Tom continues to operate his "classy, authentic" restaurant, Tom's Bistro, which has become the most successful chophouse in Pawnee. However, an economic recession throws open a money pit that pulls Tom's Bistro. But with the help of new wife Lucy (Natalie Morales), Tom writes a bestselling book, which he naturally parlays into a lucrative motivational speaking gig. Tom and Garry/Jerry are prime candidates for a Parks spinoff, and in 2022, one of the series' most key players signaled her openness for more. Poehler, who also produced the series, said she was "always standing by" for a Parks reboot. "Anytime anybody gives me the word, and I'm down."
