2020 Delhi riots: Court acquits 12 in Hashim Ali murder case

NEW DELHI: A Delhi court has acquitted 12 men of all charges linked to the killing of a man identified as Hashim Ali during the 2020 North-East Delhi riots.
Additional Sessions Judge Pulastya Pramachala of the Karkardooma Courts cleared all allegations against Lokesh Kumar Solanki, Pankaj Sharma, Ankit Chaudhary, Prince, Jatin Sharma, Himanshu Thakur, Vivek Panchal, Rishabh Chaudhary, Sumit Chaudhary, Tinku Arora, Sandeep and Sahil.
'I find that in the name of circumstantial evidence, there are some fragments and pieces of evidence, which fall much short to point out towards any of the accused persons as member of the culprit mob,' the judge said in the order.
According to witness accounts, the accused were seen carrying stones, sticks, swords, iron rods, and shouting slogans such as 'Jai Sri Ram' and 'Har Har Mahadev'. It was further claimed that these men were leading the mob and instructing others by calling out names.
As per the FIR, they were allegedly involved in the murder of nine Muslim men after checking their identities. Public witnesses had reportedly seen the killing of Hashim Ali. The prosecution alleged that the group conspired to 'teach Muslims a lesson' for attacks on Hindus.
They were said to have armed themselves with sticks, swords, firearms and more, and killed several, including Hashim Ali and his brother Aamir Khan. But the court found the evidence lacking in terms of identifying any of the accused as part of the mob that stopped the two brothers.
'In fact, except for PW1, no other witness claimed having seen any incident, which could be connected with incident with Hashim and Amir,' the court noted.
The judge also dismissed the prosecution's claim that WhatsApp messages linked Lokesh and others to the riots. 'However, I find that this plea is just a general presumption without support of substantive evidence. It shall be matter of analysis of other piece of circumstantial evidence, to see if the chain of all circumstances has been connected, to show involvement of Lokesh and others in the incident leading to death of Hashim,' the judge further said.

Trouble in Pakistan? Army chief Asim Munir sidelines Shehbaz Sharif, to visit close ally of India..., plan is to...

Asim Munir (File) Pakistan's Army Chief, General Asim Munir, is considered to be the most powerful personality in the country. He is actively visiting several states and meeting world leaders. Last month, General Asim Munir went to the US to meet President Donald Trump. At present, If media reports are to be believed, Munir is expected to travel to Indonesia after his trip to Sri Lanka. This move is aimed at consolidating bilateral relations with the world's largest Muslim-majority country. These visits are happening at a time when Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif is reportedly being increasingly sidelined. Munir is expected to visit Colombo on July 21. As per media reports, Munir plans to engage with key stakeholders in Jakarta, aimed ultimately at building a bilateral relationship that has deteriorated since Indonesia became a stable democracy. Indonesia has backed India on significant issues such as on terrorism, on preserving national borders, at the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC), which has made Pakistan uneasy. In addition to its rigorous approach to sovereignty, Indonesia, based on its experience with Papua New Guinea, has aggressively addressed terrorist networks and radical ideologies, signing on virtually lockstep with India on these issues. In a reaffirmation of the deepening strategic and cultural ties between India and Indonesia, KH Ulil Abshar Abdalla, Chairman of the Nahdlatul Ulama Executive Board, underscored the shared challenges both countries face in combating terrorism and promoting peace. In May 2025, his remarks came during a meeting with the visiting Indian parliamentary delegation in Jakarta.'Both India and Indonesia have gone through this challenge of terrorism. I shared our experience of tackling the problem of extremism with our colleagues from India. Both countries have similar desires to achieve economic development, political stability, peace and harmony. We share a similar vision and aspirations,' Abdalla was quoted as saying by news agency ANI. During a meeting of the OIC Parliamentary Union in Jakarta in May, Indonesia, supported by Egypt and Bahrain—both of whom have strengthened their diplomatic relationship with India—stopped Pakistan from issuing a strong, specified statement against India on the Kashmir issue.

Another Muslim nation set to sign Abraham Accord soon, could create a big shift in the Islamic world, it is linked with Israel, US, through..., the country is... Another Muslim-majority country, Mauritania, may soon join the Abraham Accords, a major peace agreement that began in 2020 during US. President Donald Trump's first term. If this happens, the number of Muslim countries in the agreement will rise to five. The Abraham Accords marked the first time some Islamic countries agreed to normalize ties with Israel. So far, UAE, Morocco, Bahrain, and Sudan have joined. This was seen as a big step because many Muslim countries have avoided ties with Israel due to the long-standing conflict with Palestine. Now, efforts are being made to bring Mauritania on board. Mauritania is a member of the Arab League, and if it joins the Accords, it could create a big shift in the Islamic world. The announcement could come at any time, although neither Israel nor the U.S. has confirmed it yet. According to a report by Semafor, a meeting is expected between the leader of Mauritania and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu at the White House. This meeting is likely to happen outside of the upcoming U.S.-Africa Summit. If Mauritania officially joins, it would be another big step toward changing the relationship between Israel and the Muslim world. Talks Around Syria and Lebanon also gaining pace The upcoming meeting between Mauritania's leader and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu could decide when Mauritania will officially join the Abraham Accords. This is being seen as a very important step, especially because there is also talk about Syria possibly joining the Accords in the future. To make this happen, Trump lifted all economic sanctions on Syria. Earlier, Syrian leader Ahmed Al-Shara had also met leaders in Saudi Arabia, which is seen as a key move toward building trust. Many believe that these gestures by Trump were aimed at bringing Syria closer to Israel and encouraging it to normalize relations under the Abraham Accords. There are also discussions around Lebanon, with reports suggesting that it, too, might be considering steps to improve ties with Israel. Mauritania had cut ties with Israel in 2010 In 2010, Mauritania had completely ended its diplomatic ties with Israel. The country is quite large, with a land area of about 1 million square kilometers. If Mauritania now decides to join the Abraham Accords, it would be a big win for both Israel and the United States, as it adds strategic value and influence in the region. President Trump has repeatedly said in recent weeks that the Abraham Accords are likely to expand soon. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has also expressed that Israel is now ready to welcome more countries into the agreement. According to both leaders, the goal of expanding the Abraham Accords is to bring greater peace and stability to the Middle East by encouraging cooperation over conflict between Israel and more Arab nations.
