Furious Hyrox competitors claim new carpet for world championships sled push this weekend 'sucked' and 'slowed them down'

Daily Mail17-06-2025
Furious Hyrox competitors have cursed the carpet at a World Championships sled push race saying the floor on one 'dodgy' lane slowed them down.
Competitors at the esteemed fitness competition complained this year's event in Chicago 'sucked' after organisers deployed new turf for the first time.
Videos uploaded by athletes on social media showed them shouting angrily as they attempt to push a block of weights - to no avail.
One racer, Ray Shah, demonstrated his slow progress on lane three before zooming down another aisle with an identical block of weights to prove his point.
He complained on Instagram: 'How is this fair at the World Championships where they were using the new turf/carpet for the first time.
'This turf was to make sleds standardised...far from it!
'It's disappointing when you train so hard for you to get a dodgy lane.
'My race today was ruined as the sled just wouldn't move when I got to sled push, I got through it but at a huge cost to energy.
'Hyrox needs to do better, looking like amateur hour.'
The Hyrox event sees fitness fanatics complete a gruelling workout regime against the clock; while also providing the perfect backdrop for influencers to take selfies for social media.
Hyrox combines running and functional workout stations, where participants, including celebrity clientele like Zoe Hague and Love Island's Molly Smith, run 1km, followed by a functional workout station, repeated eight times.
Responding to Mr Shah's video, one person said: 'They will improve over time but this was quite a mistake.'
But the fitness fanatic replied saying the event was 'eight years old' and so 'not exactly new'.
Another person said: 'Hyrox needs to realise how much people spend to get here... the qualifying race, the travel, the hotels, the world's ticket...it goes on and on.
'This is major time off, training time, financial output for everyone.
'This is insanely unfair to everyone participating.'
Another competitor, Holly Archer, also shared a post.
She said: 'Well!!! That was brutal, but also bloody brilliant!
'Going to get it out and say it like everyone else! F*** those carpets!!!!
'We got lane three on the sled push.. and seeing a lot of people struggle on that lane, we had a different lane for the pull and that was wayyy easier.
'I could not move the sled push in one direction. We were a minute slower on that station and that's normally my best station. They later barricaded the first five lanes off which is honestly really disappointing.'
Responding to Ms Archer, fellow athlete Jonny Glen said: 'Congrats Holly! The sleds well and truly sucked.'
Another competitor, Todd, said: 'We'll make sure we stay clear of lane three tomorrow!'
Mr Archer responded to confirm 'faulty' lanes had now been shut.
The Hyrox competition, which launched in Germany in 2017, bills itself as the fastest-growing of its kind in the world, with events now spanning across 11 countries, including the UK, America, and Shanghai.
It has become a social media sensation since its inception eight years ago, with more than 650,000 athletes now taking part in 84 competitions across 25 countries.
Participants alternate between eight one-kilometre runs and eight functional workout stations: 1000m of SkiErg, 50m of sled push, 50m of sled pull, 80m of burpee broad jumps, 1000m of rowing, 200m of farmer's carry, 100m of sandbag lunges and 100 wall balls.
But despite building up an army of formidable spandex clad supporters raving about the fitness cult, a glamorous marketing campaign, and thousands of TikToks filmed at the event, there is also an unspoken downside.
Attendees have suffered from heart attacks, seizures, and panic attacks during or shortly after taking part - but, as such medical emergencies don't make for appealing social media content, they are often glossed over in TikTok clips and Instagram reels.
This means many people remain unaware of the potentially harmful consequences.

Islam Makhachev vs Jack Della Maddalena fight date ‘leaked' by Khabib Nurmagomedov

Khabib Nurmagomedov might have given away the event at which Islam Makhachev will challenge for the UFC welterweight title, as a fight with Jack Della Maddalena looms. Makhachev relinquished the lightweight title in May with an eye on challenging for the welterweight belt, which Della Maddalena took from Belal Muhammad – one of Makhachev's teammates – that same month. And according to Khabib – one of Makhachev's coaches and a close childhood friend of the Russian – Makhachev will take on 'JDM' at Madison Square Garden in New York City. The UFC typically holds a pay-per-view at the legendary venue every November, and while it has not yet announced this year's edition of the MSG fight card, it is expected to take place as usual. It could well prove to be UFC 322, with UFC 321 scheduled for 25 October in Abu Dhabi. 'They promise us,' Nurmagomedov, himself a former UFC lightweight champion, said at an event last weekend. He then seemed to turn to Makhachev's manager Ali Abdelaziz, sat in the crowd, to say: 'Be quiet, please. 'He's now gonna be upset because I give information. But this is his deal with UFC; I don't deal with UFC, this is his problem. 'But we have a deal with them. He's gonna fight in Madison Square Garden, and they say yes.' Nurmagomedov, also managed by Abdelaziz, held the joint-record for most successful lightweight title defences in UFC history, at three, until Makhachev submitted Renato Moicano in January. With that first-round finish, after Moicano replaced the injured Arman Tsarukyan on one day's notice, Makhachev set a new record and established himself as the No 1 pound-for-pound fighter in the UFC. But the 33-year-old faces a stern test against Della Maddalena. The Australian, 28, has won 18 fights in a row since losing his first two MMA bouts, both in 2016. He took the welterweight title from Muhammad with a unanimous-decision win, producing a clinic in striking to overcome the wrestling specialist. He also demonstrated tremendous takedown defence against Muhammad and will likely need to do the same against Makhachev. That said, the Russian does not rely on wrestling as heavily as Muhammad does and Nurmagomedov did; his own striking skills have been pivotal to his success in recent years. 'I think Maddalena is the toughest opponent in Islam's career,' the retired Khabib told Adam Zubayraev in July. 'That's my opinion. 'Not Charles, no one else,' he added, referencing Makhachev's submission of Oliveira to win the lightweight title in 2022. 'None of those other fighters. That's just my personal opinion. 'First of all, Maddalena is twice the size of Ilia [Topuria, the new lightweight champion, with whom Makhachev has been linked]. Taller, bigger, stronger legs, bigger frame. His boxing is just as good, and in grappling, he scrambles really well – if you've watched him. 'For me, if I were preparing Islam for either Ilia or Maddalena, I'd be more concerned – and am more concerned – about Maddalena.'

'Heartbroken' Ed Kelce suffering with 'enormous void' after death of his partner at age 74

Ed Kelce, the father of Travis and Jason Kelce, is reportedly 'heartbroken' over the loss of his partner, Maureen Maguire. Maureen died on Friday at the age of 74. According to her obituary, which was shared by the Kelce patriarch, she was surrounded by loved ones. And it has now been revealed that Ed, who divorced the NFL siblings' mom Donna over 10 years ago, has been left distraught at the loss. 'Maureen wasn't just his partner, she was his person. They were a team. They shared everything… games, concerts, travel, dogs, dinners with family. He's feeling an enormous void,' PEOPLE reported. Ed has remained publicly quiet on Maguire's passing. He did, however, share pictures from their time together, including a snap with Taylor Swift, the famous girlfriend of his youngest son Travis. The photo showed the three of them in Kansas City Chiefs merch, with the singer holding a card and what appears to be a friendship bracelet. Ed also shared a photograph with Maguire from Saturday Night Live in March 2023 in New York, when three-time Super Bowl winner Travis was the guest host. In an interview last year with the Los Angeles Times, Ed revealed how his girlfriend and Swift had struck up a bond. Maureen, according to Ed, jokingly told Swift 'hey, that's my boyfriend' when the singer took a selfie with Travis and Jason's father at an NFL game. Maureen's obituary describes how, thanks to Kelce's influence, she developed a strong interest in football in the later years of her life. 'She also grew an unexpected love for football later in life, sharing many laughs and adventures with her beloved friend Ed Kelce and her loyal dog Butch,' the obituary said. 'Together, they traveled often and attended football games and concerts, and embraced every opportunity to enjoy life to the fullest.' It isn't known when Ed first met Maureen, or how. But Ed and Donna Kelce, the mother of Travis and Jason, went their separate ways after nearly 25 years of marriage around the time their sons were at college. They remain friends to this day, with Travis and Jason becoming two of the most famous names in the NFL. 'I don't hate him. We're friends to this day. We get along great,' Donna once said of her ex-husband Ed. 'We were like a tag team with you two (Travis and Jason). We got to do all sorts of fun things. When one of you had to go out of town, the other person would help with the other child. It was perfect.' In a 2023 documentary about the family, Ed explained that he and Donna stayed together to be better parents. 'If we had split as we probably both would have preferred, that would have been a nightmare with the logistics, getting kids where they had to be and providing all the support,' he said. Travis and Jason have not yet commented on Maguire's passing. Travis is currently in training camp with the Chiefs ahead of the upcoming 2025 season, which for his team starts on September 5 in Brazil against the Los Angeles Chargers. The Kelce family saw their fame reach unprecedented levels in September 2023, when Travis and Taylor's romance was confirmed by Swift attending a Chiefs game alongside Donna at Arrowhead Stadium in Kansas City.

‘I can't get mad at anyone who tells me I'm a genius': original Naked Gun director softens response to reboot

David Zucker, who co-created the Police Squad! and Naked Gun franchises and directed the first two films starring Leslie Nielsen, has reacted to the warm critical reception and healthy box office takings of the reboot starring Liam Neeson. Zucker had previously expressed scepticism and even anger about the direction the new film appeared to be taking, and the decision by the studio not to include him in the process. But speaking to the Hollywood Reporter in the wake of strong ticket sales and robust reviews for the Akiva Schaffer reboot, Zucker appeared more conciliatory. 'People are liking it, which is great,' he said. 'I really like the director, and I just couldn't wish him more well. I texted him already, saying, 'I hear the reviews are great, and it's tracking well.' He was very happy to hear from me, and we'll probably get together later in the month when the smoke clears.' He continued: 'I'm excited about it because it just shows that there's a strong market for comedy in movie theatres, and spoof in particular.' Last year, the director was less enthusiastic, saying of the reboot: 'Paramount is just going ahead and doing it, they haven't involved me. They're just gonna do what they want, that's Hollywood.' Zucker and the franchise's other co-creators, including his brother Jerry Zucker, had previously pitched a fourth-instalment script focusing on the thirtysomething son of the main character Frank Drebin, but it was rejected by the studio. 'We were not excited about having the franchise given to other people,' he continued. 'They have not contacted me to make a cameo or be involved in the writing. Whether or not they're going to do a good job with it, this kind of spoof, I mean it's not rocket science, but it's not easy.' Earlier this year, Zucker reiterated his disapproval, saying he was 'not planning on seeing the Naked Gun remake'. 'I regret having seen the trailer for it,' he continued, before comparing the promo to a 2007 Brazilian pornographic film. 'It's like watching 2 Girls 1 Cup. I can't unsee it.' Despite his turnaround, Zucker reiterated his aversion to seeing the film to Hollywood Reporter, but said that the team behind it had reached out to him before its release. 'I'm not gonna see it, but I don't see any of the sequels that were of my material done by other people, and that's fine. I've told Akiva that I have no intention to see it,' he said. 'He actually invited me to come see an early cut of it, but I told him there's nothing I could do to help because it really isn't what I would have done. That's not to say that he didn't actually end up doing a good movie. But I don't think I could help with that.' Zucker added that producer Seth MacFarlane had phoned him shortly after the new script had been completed. 'He spent the first 10 minutes telling me how much he loved Airplane!, The Naked Gun and Top Secret!,' said Zucker. 'I can't get mad at anyone who will tell me what a genius I am. That was a good conversation. I was glad that Seth called, but I told him politely, 'Good luck, but I can't put my name on this.' [But] everything happens for a reason.' The new Naked Gun film stars Neeson as Frank Drebin Jr, alongside Pamela Anderson and Danny Huston. In his four-star review, the Guardian's Peter Bradshaw praised it as 'amiably ridiculous, refreshingly shallow, entirely pointless and guilelessly crass'.
