Uddhav Thackeray to attend INDIA bloc leaders' dinner in Delhi after Rahul Gandhi calls him up

Indian Express15 hours ago
Shiv Sena (UBT) chief Uddhav Thackeray will be among the political leaders attending the dinner hosted by Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi in New Delhi on August 7. Gandhi called up Thackeray Sunday and invited him to attend the meeting of the INDIA bloc leaders, Sena (UBT) mouthpiece Saamana reported Monday.
'Sena chief Uddhav Thackeray will be in New Delhi on August, 6,7 and 8 at a time when the Monsoon Session of Parliament is underway. On August 7, Thackeray will attend the INDIA bloc meeting. He will also inaugurate the new party office in Sansad Bhavan,' the paper said.
'Besides the online meeting of INDIA bloc leaders before the Monsoon Session of Parliament, no other meeting of INDA bloc has been held. Therefore, Thursday's meeting will be important. The meeting, among others, will discuss the future strategy and the problems with the voters list,' the paper said. During his visit to Delhi, Thackeray will meet leaders of different political parties and interact with the media, it said.
Meanwhile, Saamana, in its editorial Monday, alleged that last week's violence in Yevat area was abetted by people in the government. 'The police had taken action against those who had kept objectionable status. However, two MLAs went there and disturbed the peace. Instead of ensuring peace, they tried to fan the violence,' the paper said.
The Pune rural police lodged five cases and detained 17 people in connection with the communal tension and violence reported at Yavat village in Daund taluka on August 1. The police also issued a prohibitory order as per provisions of Section 163 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS). The paper also said, 'During the Modi regime, the Indian society has become insensitive and impatient. This is bad for the image of the country.'

India launches sharp counterattack on US after tariff threat, calls Trump's criticism 'Unreasonable', slams US-EU hypocrisy over…

कनाडा में G7 समिट से इतर प्रधानमंत्री मोदी और अमेरिकी राष्ट्रपति ट्रंप की मुलाकात होनी थी. New Delhi: Hours after US President Donald Trump asserted that Washington will substantially raise tariffs on goods from India over its energy ties with Russia, India on Monday launched a sharp counterattack on the United States and the European Union for their 'unjustified and unreasonable' targeting of New Delhi. The Modi government firmly rejected the criticism and pointed out the double standards in targeting it on the issue. New Delhi also said that both the US and the EU are continuing their trade relations with Russia. 'Unlike our case, such trade is not even a vital national compulsion,' the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) said. The Europe-Russia trade includes not just energy, but also fertilizers, mining products, chemicals, iron and steel, and machinery and transport equipment, the MEA said in a late-evening statement. 'Where the US is concerned, it continues to import from Russia uranium hexafluoride for its nuclear industry, palladium for its EV industry, fertilizers as well as chemicals,' it added. 'In this background, the targeting of India is unjustified and unreasonable. Like any major economy, India will take all necessary measures to safeguard its national interests and economic security,' the MEA said. It said India has been 'targeted' by the US and the EU for importing oil from Russia after the commencement of the Ukraine conflict. In fact, India began importing from Russia because traditional supplies were diverted to Europe after the outbreak of the conflict, it said. 'The US at that time actively encouraged such imports by India for strengthening global energy markets stability,' the MEA said, adding India's imports are meant to ensure predictable and affordable energy costs to the Indian consumers. 'They are a necessity compelled by global market situation. However, it is revealing that the very nations criticizing India are themselves indulging in trade with Russia,' it said. The MEA noted that the European Union in 2024 had a bilateral trade of Euro 67.5 billion in goods with Russia. 'In addition, it had trade in services estimated at Euro 17.2 billion in 2023. This is significantly more than India's total trade with Russia that year or subsequently. 'European imports of LNG in 2024, in fact, reached a record 16.5mn tonnes, surpassing the last record of 15.21mn tonnes in 2022,' it added. US will substantially raise tariffs on India: Donald Trump Earlier, US President Trump said his administration will substantially raise tariffs on India. 'India is not only buying massive amounts of Russian oil, they are then, for much of the oil purchased, selling it on the open market for big profits,' he said in a social media post. 'They don't care how many people in Ukraine are being killed by the Russian War Machine,' he said.

SC slams Rahul over remarks against Army

New Delhi: The Supreme Court on Monday stayed the proceedings in a criminal defamation case against Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi over his alleged remarks against the Indian Army over the 2020 Galwan clash with the Chinese. The top court was hearing Gandhi's appeal challenging the Allahabad High Court judgment refusing to stay the proceedings initiated in a Lucknow trial court against him over his comments that 'Chinese soldiers are beating up Indian Army personnel'. As per the complainant, Uday Shankar Srivastava, the former director of the Border Roads Organisation (BRO), the comments made on December 16, 2022, during Gandhi's Bharat Jodo Yatra, defamed the Army. Presiding over a two-judge bench, Justice Dipankar Datta told Senior Advocate A M Singhvi, who appeared for the Congress leader, 'We have read the comments… Tells us… How do you get to know that 2000 square kilometres of Indian territory have been occupied by the Chinese? Were you there? Do you have any credible material? Why do you make these statements without having any…?' 'If you are a true Indian, you would not say all these things,' Justice Dutta said. Singhvi said the comments were in 'public interest', and added, 'It is also possible that a true Indian will say look, our 20 Indian soldiers were beaten up and killed. This is also a matter of concern.'

New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi will address the BJP-led NDA parliamentary party meeting on Tuesday, a get-together of the ruling alliance's MPs which is being held after a considerable gap. The NDA meeting comes a couple of days before the filing of nomination for vice president's election begins from August 7. The NDA will have to announce its candidate, whose election will be a certainty due to the alliance's majority in the electoral college, by August 21, the last date of nomination-filing and the Monsoon Session of Parliament. The meeting comes in the middle of a session which has been all but a washout so far, except for a two-day discussion on the Pahalgam attack and Operation Sindoor.
