Slot pulls out of award ceremony after Liverpool parade tragedy

LIVERPOOL: Liverpool manager Arne Slot opted against attending a ceremony in London where he was due to receive an award, saying he withdrew 'out of solidarity' with those affected in the team's city-center parade tragedy.
Slot was named both the Premier League's Manager of the Season and the League Managers Association's Manager of the Year after guiding Liverpool to its record-tying 20th league title in his first season at the club.
Hundreds of thousands of fans lined the streets of Liverpool on Monday to celebrate with the players as they paraded the trophy on open-top buses, only for joy to turn to anguish when a man rammed his car into a crowd of people.
Sixty-five people were injured and 11 remained hospitalized Tuesday in stable condition. A 53-year-old British man has been arrested on suspicion of attempted murder, police said, and was also being held on suspicion of dangerous driving and driving on drugs.
On turning down the invitation to attend the LMA's award ceremony, Slot wrote in a letter: 'This is not a decision I have taken lightly but it is one that I feel is absolutely right given the seriousness of the situation."
'Football," he added, "is and always should be a game built on rivalry, but it is also a great source of comradeship, especially at times like this.'
Slot also paid tribute to the emergency services, the authorities in Liverpool and 'supporters and bystanders who helped one another in an hour of need."
'I think everyone involved in the aftermath deserves the gratitude of all of us,' Slot said.

Jurgen Klopp hammers FIFA for ‘the worst idea ever in football', doesn't hold back against revamped Club World Cup

Former Liverpool and Borussia Dortmund manager Jurgen Klopp has long been a vocal critic of the increasing fixture congestion in top-level football and the impact it has on the welfare and well-being of football professionals, and he once again used his platform to demand better for players. This time, the target of his ire was the newly-refurbished FIFA Club World Cup, now extended to a month-long window in the European summer break. Former Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp has been serving as Red Bull's head of global football after leaving the English team in 2024.(AP) With fixtures piling up particularly for the top teams, who already play upwards of 60 club games in a 10-month window, the summer has now been taken up by another competition that further reduces their rest and recovery time. Klopp was enraged by this fact, and hammered the decision-makers for not considering the impact this would have on players. "It's all about the game and not the surrounding events - and that's why the Club World Cup is the worst idea ever implemented in football in this regard," said the German furiously in an interview with Welt am Sonntag. "People who have never had or do not have anything to do with day-to-day business anymore are coming up with something. There is insane money for participating, but it's also not for every club,' continued Klopp. While manager of Liverpool, Klopp often questioned how many matches his team were forced to play as they competed in six or seven different competitions in a single season. "Last year it was the Copa [America] and the European Championship, this year it's the Club World Cup, and next year the World Cup. That means no real recovery for the players involved, neither physically nor mentally,' explained Klopp, now the head of global football for Red Bull. 'I have serious fears, that players will suffer injuries they've never had before next season. If not next season, then it will happen at the World Cup or afterwards.' Klopp warns FIFA: 'The entire product loses value' Klopp's views are also upheld by FIFPro, the global representative organisation for footballers, who had raised these concerns with FIFA in a meeting last winter, but not to much success in terms of reversing this trend. The players have also increasingly begun to make their frustrations heard: Spanish and Manchester City midfielder Rodri played a whopping 63 matches in the 2023/24 season, and while he received the Ballon d'Or for his excellence and reliability, suffered an ACL injury that ruled him out of this season just passed. Rodri had said that players were close to going on strike as the fixture list mounted upwards almost unilaterally from the powers that be in world football, and his sentiments were echoed by Klopp: "We constantly expect the players to go into every game as if it were their last. We tell them that 70 or 75 times a year. But it can't go on like this. We have to make sure they have breaks, because if they don't get them, they won't be able to deliver top performances - and if they can't achieve that anymore, the entire product loses value." Any European team that reaches the Club World Cup final will have less than a month before the official start of the fresh season, which means players might receive next to no time away for a summer break. With football injuries also on the rise, how FIFA responds to such criticisms and increasing pressure could be an important storyline to follow in the coming months.

Tennis-Raducanu back at Wimbledon as British number one but tempers expectations

LONDON, - The first round of Wimbledon begins on Monday with defending champion Carlos Alcaraz seeking a hat-trick of titles at the All England Club while women's top seed Aryna Sabalenka resumes her quest for a first major this year after two runner-up finishes. HT Image TOP WOMEN'S MATCH: EMMA RADUCANU V MINGGE XU Emma Raducanu strides onto the grasscourts of Wimbledon on Monday as the British number one, a world away from the wide-eyed teenager who burst onto the scene at the All England Club four years ago. "It does feel like a long time ago. A lot has happened in the last four years," Raducanu told reporters, reflecting on her meteoric rise from obscurity to the fourth round in 2021, a run that preceded her astonishing U.S. Open triumph later that year. Raducanu faces 17-year-old British wildcard Mingge Xu, who will be making her own Grand Slam debut this year. "It's good to see a new generation, it keeps us on our toes. It keeps us hungry to improve. It's just healthy competition between all of us," Raducanu added. The intervening years have been more of a cautionary tale, as injuries and the constant changing of coaches prevented the 22-year-old from building on that early success. A recent back injury also forced her to withdraw from the Berlin Open and Raducanu arrives at Wimbledon with a question mark over her physical condition, saying her back is not yet at 100%. Once the darling of British expectations, Raducanu now seeks to manage them carefully, speaking with the hard-earned wisdom of someone who has experienced both the summit and the struggle of professional tennis. "Truthfully I don't expect much from myself this year," she said. "I know I've just been dealing with certain things. I just want to go out there and embrace the moment, embrace the occasion." TOP MEN'S MATCH: TAYLOR FRITZ V GIOVANNI MPETSHI PERRICARD While most top seeds fine-tuned their game on Wimbledon's pristine practice courts this week, Taylor Fritz was busy collecting silverware on England's south coast, a strategy the American hopes could finally unlock his Grand Slam potential. The ninth seed arrives at the All England Club as the in-form player on grass having claimed two titles, beating Alexander Zverev on his home turf to lift the Stuttgart Open before he defended his Eastbourne Open title on Saturday. "One more title and I might have to buy a house here," quipped Fritz after clinching his fourth Eastbourne crown in six editions on Saturday. Fritz's unconventional preparation, playing competitively right up to the start of Wimbledon while rivals opt for closed practice sessions, represents a calculated gamble for a player whose Grand Slam performances have failed to match his seeding. Despite enjoying fourth-seed status at both the Australian Open and the French Open this year, the 27-year-old American failed to reach the second week at both majors. But where some players might see risks related to fatigue with such a tight turnaround, Fritz sees a competitive advantage. "It is what it is, having to play at Wimbledon on Monday," Fritz said. "I'd rather go into a tournament with a lot of confidence than being there for the whole week just practising."
