'A.I.' director Steven Spielberg opposed to using AI in front of the camera
LOS ANGELES, June 27 (Reuters) - When Steven Spielberg directed the film "A.I. Artificial Intelligence," the technology was the stuff of science fiction -- a device to tell a story about the ethics of creating sentient machines.
Now, AI is a concrete reality in Hollywood - one where Spielberg said he has drawn a line in the sand.
"I don't want AI making any creative decisions that I can't make myself," said Spielberg, in an interview with Reuters. "And I don't want to use AI as a non-human collaborator, in trying to work out my creative thinking."
Spielberg spoke on Thursday after a ceremony dedicating the Steven Spielberg Theater on the Universal Studios lot. The event acknowledged the director's decades-long relationship with the studio, which released such films as "Jaws," "Jurassic Park," "Schindler's List" and "E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial."
The acclaimed director joked that his career at Universal began in 1967, when he took a tour of the lot as a high school student. He said he hid in the bathroom during a break, and waited for the tour to move on without him, "then I had the entire lot to myself that day."
"Our hope and dream is that it's not just the place that is founded on his extraordinary legacy," said Donna Langley, chairman of NBCUniversal Entertainment & Studios. "But it is the place of future hopes and dreams of filmmakers and storytellers who are going to take this company into the next 100 years and the 100 years after that, people who come with a hope and a dream, people who have been inspired by Steven."
Spielberg's 2001 modest box office hit "A.I. Artificial Intelligence" was a meditation on love, loss and what it means to be human through the eyes of a discarded humanoid robot. In the Pinocchio-like journey set in a futuristic dystopia, David, the android boy, yearns to be human, searching for love, in a world of machines and artificial intelligence.
The film hit screens when AI was still in its nascent stages and predated the launch of OpenAI's ChatGPT by 21 years.
"It wasn't about artificial intelligence as much as it was about sentient existence, and can you love a sentient entity? Can a mother love a robot child?" said Spielberg. "It was not really where AI is taking us today. Eventually, there will be a convergence between AI and robotics."
Spielberg said AI can be a great tool "if used responsibly and morally" to help find a cure for cancer and other diseases.
"I just draw a line -- and it's not a line of cement, it's just a little bit of line in the sand -- which gives me some wiggle room to say (that) I have the option to revise this thinking in the future," he said. "But right now, I don't want AI making any creative decisions."
He said he has seen, first-hand, how technology can replace human talent while working on the 1993 film, "Jurassic Park."
Spielberg initially planned to use renowned stop-motion clay animation artist Phil Tippett to create the dinosaurs roaming the island theme park. Visual effects artist Dennis Muren proposed an alternative method, using Industrial Light & Magic's computer-generated imagery to create realistic dinosaurs. The director is an executive producer in "Jurassic World: Rebirth" which reaches theaters on July 2.
"That kind of made certain careers somewhat extinct," said Spielberg. "So, I'm very sensitive to things that AI may do to take work away from people."
Spielberg said he has yet to use AI on any of his films so far, though he is open to possible applications of it behind-the-scenes, in functions like budgeting or planning.
"I don't want to use it in front of the camera right now," Spielberg said. "Not quite yet."

Jennifer Garner reunites with Violet after clash over climate change
and her daughter Violet reunited Friday after their spat over climate change. The 53-year-old actress and her woke 19-year-old daughter recently clashed over the response to the LA wildfires. Evacuating to a luxury hotel in January, Violet later condemned the move as privileged response to the so-called climate crisis. The 19-year-old, whom Garner shares with ex-husband Ben Affleck, recently went viral for a Yale essay in which she detailed a heated argument with her mom, 53, during their stay at the hotel. According to a exclusive, Garner and Affleck were reportedly blindsided by the essay and had no idea Violet had written about the incident for her college paper. But on Friday night, the mother-daughter duo appeared to be working through the tension as they stepped out for dinner at celeb favorite A.O.C. in Brentwood. Dressed in a striped sweater and jeans, Garner looked deep in conversation with her daughter, who wore a red sweater and flowing maxiskirt. Of course, Violet faced a backlash for toting high-end accessories in the days following her climate change rant. In May, she was photographed carrying a vintage Chloe Marcie bucket bag - an item that typically resells for around $1,000. Just days earlier, the Yale freshman had also been spotted with a Marc Jacobs purse valued between $200 and $300. The sightings sparked criticism online, with some questioning whether her message about climate privilege aligned with her own designer tastes. The news comes after Violet stepped out with her Oscar-winning father as well as her younger brother Samuel, 13, to grab a lowkey lunch - and had draped the stylish bag over her arm. Affleck and Garner - whose divorce was finalized in 2018 - are also parents to child Fin, 16. Violet has been vocal about her advocacy for both climate change and public health and recently wrote an essay for her university's Global Health Review that was titled A Chronically Ill Earth: COVID Organizing as a Model Climate Response in Los Angeles. Masked up: Violet detailed an argument that she had with her mom Jennifer Garner in the wake of the deadly fires that ravaged LA; seen last year

My sister wants to wear a Bridgerton-style dress to my wedding – I think it's ‘too white', others say I'm overreacting
YOUR wedding day is meant to be one of the biggest and happiest days of your life. But things were left up in the air for one bride-to-be after her sister shared the dress she planned on wearing to the celebration. 2 Posting on Reddit, the bride explained that she had asked the female members of her family to wear blue, so they could collectively be her 'something blue'. But when her 19-year-old sister wanted to wear a pastel blue dress she wasn't sure what to make of it. "Am I being a bridezilla for thinking this is too bridal/not on the mark?" She asked fellow Reddit users after showing a picture of the garment. Although the dress was pale blue, it could easily look white under certain light. Not only that, but the dress featured a white strip down the front, which many thought pushed the boundaries. "I thought this was a wedding dress at first," one person commented on the post. A second agreed: "It looks more white than blue. I would suggest a better colour, material, and style. The material looks heavy too." "That's nuts, it's obviously bridal, put your foot down," a third wrote. Another comment read: "Is she a Bridgerton? Yeah, I can see why you don't like it is is very pale." And someone replied with a reference to the hit Netflix show: "Scrolled way too far for this haha. Immediately when I saw it, in my head I heard 'DAPHEEEEE, YOU MUST MAKE HASTE!' Meanwhile, others were more concerned by the style of the dress than the colour, as some slammed the dress as "matronly." Laura Nolan says 'yes to the Dress' One joked: "Is she trying to look like she lives in 1800's London?" "It looks like a set piece from Downton Abbey or Bridgerton," a second slammed. "Tell her she can wear that dress on the prairie when she helps John-Boy with the potato crop," someone else chimed in. But others thought the dress was even worse than that. "I think it looks like a panty liner, with the absorbent strip down the centre. What an unfortunate dress," one said. Wedding Guest Outfit Etiquette If you're struggling to decided on a dress to see you through wedding season, here's a few rules on what not to wear so you don't get in trouble. Folklore says that wearing red at a wedding means you slept with the groom. Casual attire like jeans and flip flops should always be avoided. Any colour that could be picked up as white or cream - even if it's not. Most would agree that your cleavage needs to be covered. Wearing white is a massive no-no if you're not the bride. And another thought it looked more like toilet paper as they commented: "I'm sorry but that's the ugliest dress I've ever seen. It looks like crumpled up toilet paper. Tell her no." After the responses, the bride decided to confront her sister over the dress, and luckily she agreed to ditch it. "I told her it would likely photograph super light during the day and offered to pay for another dress she would like to wear," she explained. The bride was praised for putting her foot down by many of the Reddit users. One said: "Good for you, it's your day and you shouldn't have to compromise." "There are so many better dresses, help her pick something," another suggested. Wedding makeup do's and dont's Paige Williams, Founder & CEO of the iconic makeup brand shared her tips. DO: Go timeless over trendy We all love a trend babe, but for your wedding day? Let's keep it classic. Think soft glam, radiant skin, neutral tones with a pop of sparkle - You want to look back in ten years and still be obsessed with your glam. Classic never goes out of style. DON'T: Try something totally new Your wedding day is not the time to switch it up with neon liner or completely new brows babe. You want to feel like you, just the most elevated, glowing version. Stick to what you know makes you feel confident and gorgeous. DO: Prioritise long-wear formulas Your wedding is a marathon, not a sprint. You're not just walking down the aisle, you're dancing, hugging, crying, and posing all day long. You need makeup that's in it for the long haul. Go for waterproof, transfer-proof & cry-proof products. Your face needs to slay from 'I do' to the last dance and be able to handle those happy tears. DON'T: Overload your base Babes, less is more. You want coverage, not cake. Go for that breathable, buildable base that lets your real skin glow through. You're aiming for flawless, not flat. Trust me, your photos will thank you. DO: Book a trial Non-negotiable. Whether you're DIY-ing your glam or booking a MUA, a trial is your makeup dress rehearsal. Test it in daylight, take selfies, wear it for hours. It's the only way to know it'll hit just right on the day. DON'T: Forget your neck & chest Don't stop the glam at your jawline, babe. Blend that foundation, bronzer and glow down to your neck and chest, we're going for seamless, snatched and sculpted from every angle. You're the main event, let it show.

With her hair swept into an elegant bun, the Italian beauty was all smiles as she made her way to the wedding venue alongside the likes of Natasha Poonawalla and Edward Enninful. Meanwhile, her partner Leonardo was seen heading to the nuptials separately, where he was then mocked over his bizarre penchant for a low sitting baseball cap. The Oscar winner is known for his trademark baseball cap but took the look to a new extreme at the wedding festivities as he pulled the LA Lakers hat comically down over his eyes and nose while stepping out. The model, 27, who has been dating the 50-year-old Hollywood actor for two years, was all smiles as she left the Gritti Palace Hotel before being helped into a water taxi Despite being instantly recognizable as a Hollywood A-lister and clad in a tux for the wedding, the slimmed-down star still tried to hide as his hat fell over his face - leading amused fans to compare him to a 'baby elephant hiding behind a tree.' One fan wrote: 'Leo's giving baby elephant' while a second typed: 'The way Leo is wearing that hat is beyond parody.' Others typed: 'Leo trying to hide because he's embarrassed to been seen there or what? 'What a sellout. Youre a climate activist you say, Leo? 'Leonardo DiCaprio we can still see you… 'Leo has great advice which he doesn't follow himself. I'm sure there's a word for that... 'He dresses like that pretty much all the time unless he's doing a big event or publicity, I think he doesn't want to be recognized/approached by the general public which honestly I would do the same if I happened to be famous. Gross of him to go to this regardless tho.' Vittoria's simple black dress featured a plunging V-neck, which she accessorised with a diamond choker necklace and diamond stud earrings Despite being instantly recognisable as a Hollywood A-lister, the star still tried to hide as his hat fell over his face - leading fans to compare him to a 'baby elephant hiding behind a tree' Cheers erupted as Jeff Bezos and Lauren Sanchez exchanged vows at their $20 million Venetian wedding in front of their glamorous celebrity friends. A-List stars including Oprah Winfrey, Ivanka Trump and Usher are among stars who've traveled to the private island by water to watch the romantic nuptials take place. Described as the 'wedding of a century', the 61-year-old Amazon founder and one of the world's richest men and his bride-to-be, 55, have welcomed nearly 200 VIPs to Venice for three days of lavish celebrations. It was recently revealed Bezos and Sanchez have already married legally ahead of today's ceremony on San Giorgio Maggiore island. I It came as guests including Kylie Jenner were forced to take cover from a freak thunderstorm during the couple's pre-wedding party inside the historic Madonna dell'Orto cloisters. A-listers Kim Kardashian, Oprah Winfrey and Orlando Bloom jetted in to Italy earlier this week for the nuptials which come two years after Bezos asked Sanchez to marry him on his $500 million superyacht. Stars were forced to take cover on Thursday as the couple's pre-wedding party was hit by a huge freak thunderstorm. The lavish event held at the Madonna dell Orto cloisters marked the start of the billionaire couple's lavish three-day wedding in Venice, Italy, which will come to a close on Saturday. However, Thursday night's star-studded soiree was brought to an early end due to the intense downpour. Guests dived for cover under the vaulted cloisters as lightening bolts flashed across the sky and thunder rumbled overhead at the end of what was a torridly humid day with temperatures nudging 96.8° Fahrenheit. Torrential downpours and a strong wind left guests soaked as they then dashed for water taxis which had been scrambled a good 45 minutes ahead of the midnight finish time. The strong gusts of winds whipped table cloths away and sent waiters scurrying for umbrellas to protect the VIP attendees.
