Saudi Super Cup featured in HK for the first time

Hong Kong will make history next month by hosting the first-ever Saudi Super Cup to be staged in East Asia, and could potentially feature superstar Cristiano Ronaldo.
The four-team tournament will take place from August 19 to 23 at the Hong Kong Stadium.
The action kicks off on August 19 with a highly anticipated clash between league champions Al-Ittihad and Al-Nassr, whose squad currently includes Ronaldo.
The following day sees last year's Super Cup champions Al-Hilal face off against Al-Qadsiah.
The tournament culminates with the final on August 23.
Eric Fok, chairman of the Football Association of Hong Kong, China, hailed the event as a significant milestone, proving the SAR's capability to stage major international sporting events.
He expressed strong confidence in a full house, citing Hong Kong's renowned passion for football.
"By hosting this event, I'm sure that we'll bring in lots of tourism. Secondly, Hong Kong, we have a big heart for developing sports, especially in football," he said.
"Recently, a local team playing against India, we had a filled-up stadium and it really reflects the passion for Hong Kong people for football."
Fok added that the tournament also signifies deepening ties between Hong Kong and Saudi Arabia.
"I believe this is only the beginning. This arise from last November [when] we signed the MOU (Memorandum of Understanding) to see how do we cooperate and partner going forward," he said.
"We know Saudi Arabia is hosting the 2034 World Cup and they are preparing for that.
"In terms of the team, in terms of the federation of preparing for this world-scale tournament , there's many areas that Hong Kong can learn and cooperate with them. I believe this cup just symbolises the partnership that we have. Going forward, it should be more exciting for Hong Kong football."
Tickets for the tournament will go on sale from July 15.

The merchandise, featuring the National Games mascots "Xiyangyang" and "Lerongrong" alongside Hong Kong-specific imagery such as Tai O and the Star Ferry, will go on sale starting Monday. Law said initial purchase locations include the Kai Tak Mall, West Kowloon Station and Wan Chai Immigration Tower. "In the future, we will gradually expand to more locations across Hong Kong for the convenience of citizens and tourists. The licensed merchandise retailers will also introduce products from the Guangdong competition zone for sale in Hong Kong," she said. Product offerings range from plush toys and pins to cups and other commemorative items. Regarding the Games themselves, Law said that preparations were progressing smoothly, and she encouraged the public to support the SAR delegation during the competition.

Rower Chiu Hin-chun said he wanted to take the form that earned him World Cup silver and turn it into more glory at the World Championships and National Games this year. 'With two medals in Italy and Switzerland, it proved that Hong Kong athletes can also compete. 'I used to feel it was difficult to reach a final, but I managed to start doing so in recent years. I won gold in the same leg in Switzerland last year, and with two more medals now, I think it's a recognition of my ability.' Weiqi tournament kicks off in HK The three-day Weiqi competition is being held at the University of Science and Technology. Photo: RTHK A Weiqi competition amongst university students began in Hong Kong on Thursday, as 14 teams from Asia compete for the title. It is the third edition of the Hong Kong International University Student Weiqi Competition. New entrants to the board game tournament include students from Tsinghua and Peking Universities. The three-day event, hosted by the Hong Kong Greater Bay Area Weiqi Promotion Association, is being held at the University of Science Technology. Secretary for Constitutional and Mainland Affairs Erick Tsang, who attended the opening ceremony, said he is glad to see that Weiqi is being promoted because it is part of traditional Chinese culture. He added that Hong Kong residents have shown increasing enthusiasm for the game in recent years. The organiser said the event is meant to promote the board game in the SAR, whilst encouraging exchanges between Weiqi players from around the world. Weiqi was a sport at the Hangzhou Asian Games held two years ago.
