EFF reshuffles leadership to boost organisational strength ahead of 2026 elections

IOL News12-05-2025
The EFF reshuffles provincial leadership to sharpen internal capacity and prepare for intensified electoral engagement ahead of 2026, strengthening its presence in key provinces across South Africa.
The Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) have announced a series of significant leadership appointments across several provinces, aimed at reinforcing discipline, sharpening leadership capacity, and deepening grassroots organisational presence.
The party said the shake-up is intended to "refine the EFF's leadership machinery, deepen accountability," and ensure its structures are "well-coordinated, administratively sound, and financially efficient" in preparation for intensified electoral engagement.
The changes, were effected in strict accordance with Section 14 of the EFF Constitution, following resolutions taken at the 2nd Central Command Team (CCT) Meeting of the 3rd National People's Assembly (NPA), held in Bela Bela earlier this month.
EFF spokesperson Sinawo Thambo said the appointments are part of 'decisive organisational interventions to reinforce, consolidate, and sharpen leadership capacity,' and a reflection of the party's continued commitment to building a mass-based, ideologically coherent movement grounded in the struggles of the working class and the poor.
''The EFF remains steady in its revolutionary mission: to build a mass-based, militant, and disciplined organisation that is firmly rooted in the struggles of the working class and the poor, and that will deliver true economic freedom in our lifetime,'' said Thambo.

Fallen councillor remembered, mourners demand action

Members of the metro's council recently held a special council meeting, which served as a memorial service for the late Councillor Thabang Masemola. The Ward 10 Councillor was gunned down by an unknown man outside a tuck shop on the main road in Stoffel Park, in the far east of Mamelodi, on July 9. Members of Masemola's family, as well as councillors from all political parties, gathered on July 18 to celebrate his life. Many councillors called for justice to come swiftly, demanding that Masemola's death not be in vain, and that the perpetrators not roam free. Councillor Katlego Makgaleng said that though they represent different political parties, they are one as councillors. 'He was a man of integrity. He was a great man. As Alderman Maluleka said, you would think he's very quiet looking at him from the outside, but inside, he was a man of integrity and wisdom, who was always willing to impart some of that wisdom with those he engaged with,' Makgalaeng said. Councillor Komaseroto Benjamin Disoloane of the EFF said the feeling was unreal as he and many others were used to seeing Masemola daily. He further called on the mayor and all councillors to wage war against all criminals in the city. 'If we really respect and want to honour Thabang, we have to fight crime like no one has ever seen before. We cannot come here and sit, and send our well wishes without doing anything. 'Tomorrow it might be you. The question is, what do we do now? If need be, let's have our own General Mkhwanazi here in the metro,' Disoloane said. Councillor Jacob Mathabathe said that it was not right that Masemola's life was needlessly taken and that his children remain heartbroken. 'We want to tell the Masemola family that we are with you, always. Thabang's death must not be in vain. 'We've had a lot of councillors who have been murdered, and we don't know what happened to this day; the culprits have not been found. 'We have to make sure that every culprit who commits murder, not only of councillors but any murderer, must be brought to justice. 'One murder is one too many. We've got to stand up and say: Enough is enough,' Mathabathe said. Councillor Déhan Harmse expressed his condolences to the family with two Bible verses which spoke of comfort during trying times. He said that Thabang's death has left the FF Plus with a heavy heart, and extended the party's condolences to the ANC. 'I saw Councillor Masemola's passion first-hand at the start of last year, during an oversight visit at Lusaka Clinic. 'He was very adamant about pushing the completion of the clinic so it could serve the community in and around the ward he served. 'This showed me that he truly cared for the people he served and truly cared for their well-being,' Harmse said. On July 9, Masemola and his companion were taking his new car out for a test drive. While stopping for food on Malapana Street and engaging in conversation with a friend, an unknown man, wearing a jacket with a hoodie, approached them and shot Masemola several times. Following the shooting, the suspect got into a car and left the scene. Emergency services declared Masemola dead on the scene. Police continue to ask residents with any information regarding the shooting to contact local law enforcement. Do you have more information about the story? Juju's presence powers EFF to victory in hometown poll

The EFF snatched a crucial by-election victory in Polokwane's 'Juju Valley', signalling a warning shot to the ANC ahead of 2026. The presence of EFF leader Julius Malema on the ground and voting in his home ward in Polokwane appears to have paid off after his party dealt the ANC a serious blow in Wednesday's by-election for a seat in the Polokwane local municipality. EFF's Mongatane Ramaphoko garnered 3 370 votes compared with the 2 404 of the ANC's Mokgadi Boloko. Electoral Commission of SA manager Nkaro Mateta said the election was free and fair. Although it was expected the EFF would triumph in an area named 'Juju Valley' after Malema's nickname, the ANC said it was not deterred by the result. ANC downplays defeat ANC Peter Mokaba regional chair John Mpe said nothing was lost because, despite the win, the ANC still dominates the Polokwane municipality, holding 57 of the 90 seats, while the EFF has 19 (inclusive of the recent by-election), DA seven, Freedom Front Plus two, while Abantu Batho Congress, African Christian Democratic Party, Congress of the People and Magoshi Swaranang Movement each hold one seat. Mpe said the council had a total of 45 wards, the DA controlled four, the EFF three and the ANC sat comfortably with 38. He called the EFF win 'a drop in the ocean'. 'Between today and 2026, we have planned to rebuild and strengthen our structures, embark on an aggressive recruitment drive and voter education, while we ensure our communities, both Juju Valley and elsewhere, get municipal basic services,' he said. ALSO READ: Malema's revenge politics puts ANC on notice The ANC also still dominates the Limpopo legislature, with 48 out of the 64 seats. 'Tired of empty promises' The EFF has nine, followed by the DA with four. Independent political analyst Solly Rachilo said maybe it was time for the ANC to watch its back. 'Many people, particularly those who are tired of empty service delivery promises from the ANC-led government, are now seeking home in other political parties such as the EFF, the DA and uMkhonto weSizwe of former president Jacob Zuma,' said Rachilo. 'Remember, the South African Communist Party has contested the elections on its own for the very first time and got 1%. 'Breaking away from the tripartite alliance should be reason enough for the ANC to watch its back ahead of the municipal polls next year.' EFF eyes 2026 with bold confidence EFF Limpopo chair Lawrence Mapoulo said: 'When we went to the polls, we went there armed and prepared for any eventuality. We carried all our youth, middle-aged men and women and pensioners to that war. 'They are fighting a losing battle – watch and learn when we take power in 2026.' 'We are Mkhwanazi and Mkhwanazi is us': EFF's Eugene Mthethwa

EFF MP Eugene Mthethwa has shown support for KwaZulu-Natal police commissioner Lt-Gen Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi after damning allegations he made against senior police officials and the minister of police in a recent briefing, accusing them of interfering in cases police are investigating. Mkhwanazi's briefing sparked an intense debate, with some criticising his manner of approach in addressing the issue while others commended his bravery. During a police portfolio committee meeting in parliament on Wednesday, Mthethwa said Mkhwanazi's briefing was a 'deep outcry and a desperate measure' to be heard. 'He must've gone through proper protocols to highlight his concerns but nobody acted upon that,' Mthethwa said. 'Whatever is said about Mkhwanazi on other issues doesn't matter; what matters is what he has brought to our attention.' Hundreds of South Africans, civil society groups and political parties such as the MK Party have taken to the streets to show their support for Mkhwanazi and demand action. 'We are general Mkhwanazi and general Mkhwanazi is us. This is clearly displayed by the #handsoffMkhwanazi campaign in South Africa. This is because they identify themselves with what Mkhwanazi has done to draw attention [to the matter]. 'The mere fact that people are on the streets before anything happens is a ticking time bomb. Should anything happen to Mkhwanazi, I second the notion that this country will see fire.' On Sunday President Cyril Ramaphosa placed police minister Senzo Mchunu on special leave while a commission of inquiry investigates Mkhwanazi's allegations. Mthethwa criticised Ramaphosa's decision, describing it as 'reckless, hurriedly done and a delay tactic'. 'South Africans are shaken to the core and are wondering if they still have a policing system that can be trusted,' Mthethwa said. 'They are baseless as they undermine the constitutional prescripts. The pronouncements are showing so much uncaring of our government that adds a burden to taxpayers who are overly burdened by the bloated government of national unity cabinet, salary of a minister who's on special leave while the acting minister will also draw a salary for his acting role.' MPs agreed an ad hoc committee to probe Mkhwanazi's allegations should be formed instead of a commission of inquiry. They also want Mkhwanazi to appear before parliament. 'It also allows the very committees to participate in the ad hoc committee, unlike the commission of inquiry that suspends the work of the committee and the confidence that the people of South Africa must have on us. The president is accountable to us.'
